FILTER-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
Application filed May 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ADAMS WILSON a. British subject, of Manchester, county of Lancaster, England, residing at Provis Road, Charlton cum Hardy, Manchester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filter-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the plates of filter presses which support the filtering cloth or material in which the lates are constructed or built up of a number of series of bars fitted into a strong frame between which the efliuent liquor flows.
The invention consists in the particular construction of each bar of the plate with grooves to face one another at the sides abutting at the center so that when the bars are placed side by side in the frame they form corrugations or indentations on the face of the plate with recesses out under the face into which the filtering cloth cannot sag however great the pressure applied to the press and so a constant and uninterrupted flow of the efiiuent liquor is maintained into a channel in the frame.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation (partly in section) of a single plate of a filter press constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional lan.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing modification of frame of plate lined with lead porcelain or other non-corrodible material.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a single bar.
Each plate of a filter press is constructed with a frame A grooved along the top and bottom, the bottom groove a forming a channel into which the efiiuent water flows from which it is drawn or drains ofi through a spout or tap a, and a number of bars B which are fitted into the top and bottom grooves of the frame A. The frame A is made with apertures C in the top rail opening into the groove therein and the bars B are inserted therethrough one by one and passed into position side by side until the plate is complete.
The center of the plate is formed of a narrow corrugated plate D with a central hole (1 through which the liquor flows as it is pumped in.
Each bar B is approximately of the shape shown in Figs. 2 and 5, with two grooves 12 out under the face at one side and two grooves I) out under the face at the other side. When the bars are in position the center members 12 abut and the grooves b 6' face one another forming recesses under the face of the plate into which the filter cloth while stretched across the face of the plate cannot sag.
The bars B may be made of metal, wood, porcelain, earthenware, or other suitable material and may be strengthened or reinforced by a wire or metal bar through the center.
The a ertures C in the top rail of the frame A are closed with pegs c of wood or other suitable material.
When the frame A is made of metal such parts of it as come into contact with liquors or acids may be provided with a protective covering or lining of lead, wood, vitreous enamel or other acid resisting material and the bars B may be similarly coated. Steam passages E may be formed in the to and bottom of the frame and these when the plates are bolted together will form contmuous passages from end to end of the press.
The bars B form a corrugated plate and the grooves b b therein prevent the filter cloth sagging into the grooves and preserve a free channel for the efliuent liquor down to the channel a.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. Bars for building up the plates of filter presses constructed with central abutting members and grooves in the adjacent faces to form channels under the face of the plate for the effluent liquor to flow from top to bottom of the plate substantially as described.
2. In a late for filter presses the combination with a frame provided with ohan- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set nels top and bottom of a central corrugated 'my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 10 plate with an aperture for the flow of the nesses, this 15th day 01": April, 1919.
