Description

M. A. McAFEE.
Improvement in Saw-Mills.

MORGAN A. MGAFEE, or TALBOTTON, GEORGIA.
IMPRO'VEIMENT m SAW-MILLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN A. McAFEE, of Talbotton, in the county of Talbot and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Mills, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of the application to saw-mills of a liner, by which to gage the stuff to be sawed in adjusting it on the blocks in advance of the saw, and show to the operator when the stuff is in the right position to have the desired amount slabbed or edged 01f, the said liner being a line orcord stretched, in advance of the saw in its plane, on levers or other devices, by which it can be readily let down close to the stuff to b Figure 1 is a front elevation of part of a sawmill with my lining attachment applied to it, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
A represents the head-blocks on the carriage B for holding the log 0 or other stuff to be sawed in the usual way. The saw D is represented in dotted lines. E is the line or cord for gaging the log or other stuff in setting it to have the right quantity cut off in the slab at the first cut. Said cord is stretched in advance of the saw and in the same plane I two levers, F, which are pivoted to an overhead fi'ame of any kind at G, and have another cord, H, connecting their other ends. The lever nearest the sawyers position has a cord, K, attached to its upper end, and hanging down within reach, by which the line E is let down for use, and
gaged by it or,
pulled up and held out of the way when not in use. Said cord has a knot, L, by which it is fastened with a wire loop or hook, M, of any kind when pulled down to hold the levers F and cord E up in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The cord E will come down by the gravity of the long arms of the levers F when the cord K is released. Instead of using the swinging levers F for holding and operating the cord E, I may have vertically-sliding holders of any kind, or it may be suspended on weighted cords arranged for rising and falling.
This contrivance will be found very useful as a guide by which to adjust the logs for slabbing, also boards for edging, which up to this time have only been gaged by the eye of the sawyer in a very imperfect manner, so that sometimes too much, and other times not enough, would be cut off, effecting a waste of material in the one case and a waste of time in the other, the stuff having to be reset and resawed in the latter case.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The lining gage or cord E, movable or adjustable levers ,F F and a support therefor, and the saw and carriage, combined and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the cords E H K, levers F, and a support therefor, with the carriage and saw, substantially as specified.
