T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR W. CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holland, in the county or Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Arms `for Multiple-Spindle Drills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to adjustable drill carrying arms for multiple spindle drills and is particularly concerned in theA provision of a very simple and novel form of adjustable connection between the arm and the journal box in which Jthe drill spindle is rotatably mounted. This invention is a specic form or modiiication under the generic invention claimed in my copending application Serial Number 282,223, filed March12, 1919. Drill carrying arms or this character are mounted in numbers on a common head in a multiple spindle drill and are often adjusted so that the drills are placed closely to gether. Moreover, the drills may be and usually are of different lengths and it may be desirable to have the different` drills operate to different depths in the work, this requiring that the drill be mounted so as to be vertically adjustable with respect to the arm to care for these conditions, the

A journal box in which a drill is rotatably mounted to turn about a vertical axis is, accordingly, adjust-ably mounted at an end of each arm and means must be provided to permit this adjustment and securing of the box in xed relation to the arm in any of the positionsto which it may be adjusted. Usually this is done by bolts, one of which must have its tightening nut located within the arm and in practically inaccessible position, while the other is at a lower position, readily accessible. Theinvention comprises novel combinations `and arrangements of parts such that a tightening or loosening of the lower bolt simultaneously effects a like tightening or loosening of the upper bolt,
trating a modified` form of construction,
`through and above and below the upper and whereby adjustment of and securing of the journal box in any desired position with `respect to the arm is accomplished through manipulation of the lower bolt only. Actually, `the same result may be had by manipulationof the upper bolt only in like manner, though in practice this is not done due to the inacessibility or the upper bolt for tightening or loosening the same.
The construction by means or' which I have accomplished this end is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different views of the drawing. The arm is made up of two spaced apart sides 1 having integral ends 2 and 3, against the latter of which the journal box is located. End 3 has openings or slots a therelower openings the metal making the end 3 `is thicker than between the openings forming shoulders 5 as shown. The journal box Gand the adjacent end of the arm are machined on contacting surfaces so that a smooth and close 'fit is made. A T-slot 7 is made in the side of the journal box next to the end 3 of the arm and T-bolts 8 have their heads 9` located in the slot, the bolts passing through bushings 'l0 which enter the openings 4 and which are formed with projections 11 at their inner ends each cut with aqbevelor incline 12 as shown. The
projection 11 on the upper bushing extends downwardly and that on the lower bushing upwardly so that the two projections extend toward each other. Between the same a bar 13, preferably of stock square in cross section, is placed, lying against the inner side of the end 3 of the arm, andbeveled at its ends and at its inner side so as to fit against the inelines 12 on the projections 11.,

I claim:
1. An adjustable arm for multiple spindle drills, comprising an arm, a journal box positioned at and against one end of the arm, upper and lower connecting devices for attaching the box to the arm, and a vertically movable member carried on the arm between said'devices and moving vertically to tighten or loosen the upper connecting device as the lower connecting device is tightened or loosened, substantially as described.

An adjustable arm for multiple spindle drills, comprising an arm, a journal box positioned vertically at and against one end of the arm, upper and lower connecting devices for attaching the box to the arm, said box being vertically movable with respect to said connecting devices, and a vertically movable member carried on the arm between said devices and moving vertically yto tighten or loosen either of the connecting devices when the other is tightened or loosened, substantiallyv as described.
3. An adjustable arm for multiple spindle drills, comprising an arm, a journal box positioned vertically at and against one end of the. arm, said box having a T-slot located vertically in the side next to the end of the arm, T-bolts located one over the other having their heads located in the slot and their Shanks extending through the end of the arm, a rbushing through which each bolt passes, a projection having an inclined side k extending downwardly from the upper bushing, a similar projection extending upwardly from the lower bushing, a bar disposed between the bushings and having its ends cut to seat against the inclined sides of the projections on said bushings and lying at one side against the end of the arm, and nuts onvthe ends of the bolts to `bear against as and JJor the purposes described.
4. A11-adjustable arm for multiple spindle drills, comprising an arm, a journal box located in vertical position against an end of the arm, bolts for attaching the box to the arm, said ibex and bolts having means of i connectionv whereby the box may be adjusted to different .positions with respect to the bolts when said bolts areloosened, bushings through which the bolts pass, said bushings .being carried by the arm, a bar `disposed against the end of the arm on the side thereof opposite to that against which the journal box rests, nuts on the endsof the bolts, and .means on the bushings engaging with the ends of the bar for simultaneously tightening or loosening both bolts as thc nut on one of the bolts is tightened or loosened.

Anadjustable arm for multiple spindle drills, comprising an arm, a journal box rlocated in'vertical .position against an endof the arm, bolts for attaching the box to the arm, interengaging meansbetween the bolts and box whereby the box may be adjusted to different positions when the bolts are loosened, a bar positioned vertically against the end of the arm on the side thereof opposite the side against which the journal box is positioned, said bar having its ends at one side cut at angles to the length of the bar Copies ot this patent may be obtained for ve cents each,
and oppositely to each other, and means on 10 the bolts to engage With said inclined ends of the bar as the bolts are tightened and force the bar against said means whereby tightening of one of the bolts simultaneously tightens the other, substantially as der 15 scribed.
