Be it known that we, lilnnnr Kna'usn, citizens of the United States and Germany, res ectively, and residents of the borough of anhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stops for Sound-Heproducing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic start-i ing and stopping devices for talking ma chines, and has particular reference to antomatic brake mechanisms for disk ma chines.
The main object of the invention is to provide improved means enabling the brake releasing mechanism to be set or adjusted in accordance with the internal diameter of the sound field of a record, by merely moving the sound arm until the needle is over the inner margin of its grooved area. When the sound arm reaches again this position at the conclusion of playing the record, after having been returned to its starting point at the outer margin, then the brake is automatically operated to arrest the turntable or record support, without further adjustment or setting.
Another object is to have the brake mech-' anism automatically controlled by the sound arm both as to stopping and starting, the position at which the sound arm causes the application of the brake being determined beforehand by merely moving the sound arm to the desired position as indicated and without interfering with the adjustment of other mechanisms.
A further object is to render the sound arm capable of dischargingall of the following functions; first, to apply the brake at the termination of the inward movement of the arm as just stated; secondly, to take.
of]? the brake when the arm is moved to bring the needle to the beginning or outer margin of the record, thereby permitting the machine to start automatically; and thirdly, to also put on the brake whenever the arm is moved farther outward than the lattennamed margin, as when removing or positioning a record.
A particular object is to provide a device of the character described, which is of a simple and compact construction and adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary Specification of Letters Patent.

Generally and simply described, the invention comprises a turntable brake controlledby the movement of the sound arm, means operating to take the brake off when the sound arm is moved from an inward to a normal outward position, brake-tripping mechanism actuated by the sound arm when the latter is moved in toward the center of the reoord-disk this mechanism being set by a preliminary inward movement of the sound arm to cause the application of the brake at the desired point in the inward record-reproducing movement of the arm, and further means whereby the sound arm trips the brake, when the former is swung to the outer limit of its movement. The advantages of the invention as here briefly outlined are best realized when all these features and instrumentalities are combined but useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole. Particular features of novelty will become apparent as the specification proceeds.

The main part of the improved mechanism is mounted on a plate 20 which is suitprojection to ably secured by screws to the top of the cabinet 10 substantially in line with. the sound arm support 13.
The brake proper is shown as consisting of a lever 21 pivoted at 22 to one side of the plate 20, and carrying in threaded engage ment with it a hollow adjustable screw 23, which receives at one end the shank of a leather plug 24, adapted to bear against the side of the turntable 11. The other end 25 of the lever 21. is received between abut 'lnents 26 depending from a bar or slide 27,
which constitutes one form of operating connection for the brake. This part as illustrated is received in guides 28. extending up from the plate 20, in which it may have rectilinear movement endwise. A spring 29 anchored at 30 on the supporting plate bears with one of its ends against the middle portion of theslide-bar 27, as at 31, and tends to move the bar in the direction re quired: to apply the brake. Obviously the spring might act directly on the latter.
Theother end 32 of theslide bar 27 is placed oppositeone side of a lever 36 fulcrumed at 37 on the plate 20. This lever constitutes oneembodiment of abrake retracting member, jection 90 on the sound arm. In the present instance the said lever 36 is adapted to exert a thrust on the bar 27 so as to take off the brake, when said projection bears as at 90 against a latch 39. This latch is pivoted at 40 to the lever 36 and permits the sound arm pass by idly when returned in the opposite direction as indicated at 90". A spring 42 anchored on the fulcrum pin or screw 37 and bearing at one end against a stop 43 on the lever 36, presses at the. opposite end against the latch 39 and holds the latter pro ected, while a pin 44: depending from. the said latch and contacting with a side surface of the lever 36 serves to limit the movement of the latch under the action of the said spring 42. The surfaces on the latch 39 contacted by the sound arm projection 90 when moving as at 90 and 90" are so formed relatively to the direction of movement. and the pivot 40, that the latch yields to the lever in one direction (90 and not in the other (90 Consequently when the sound arm is swung outward its pro jection moves the member 36 as a whole, causing the latch to exert its thrust on the bar 27, thus taking off the brake, while when the arm is swung in the reverse direction the brake is unaffected by the. engagement of theprojection with the latch.
Adjustable tripping mechanism is em ployed for the brake and in the present instance such mechanism includes a detent separatefrom the brakeretracting means, which detent automatically engages the brake or a thereto connected part so as to hold the same off the record support. This cooperating with a pror detent is arranged to be released by the sound arm when the latter approaches the center of the record-disk and is shiftable beforehand by the sound arm so as to be later released. at any desired point in the inward movement of the arm.
In the particular construction shown a detent lever 50, having arms 51, 52 is fulcrumed at 53, on a slide or adjustable support 54 which alsolimits the upward move ment of the lower arm 52. The latter arm is adapted to engage an abutment 60 on the slide bar 27. To enable the detent to cooperate at any adjustment, the abutment is formed as a ledge 60 on an extension 61 proj ecting at right angles to said bar.
In order that the tripping mechanism may be automatically set by the sound arm for each record, the following instrumentalities are provided, viz: means :for holding the tripping device at any adjustment, means tending to restore this device to unset or normal condition, and means actuated by the sound arm for releasing the hold of the device when the arm is swung all the way out. In the particular embodiment shown, the slide 54 is mounted 'on a pair of guide rods 55, 56 inserted in cars 57, 58 rising from. the plate .20. One of these rods is capable of a canting movement so as to cause the slide to bind. In this way a frictional means is provided for holding the slide 54: at any adjustment. To this end, one extremity of the rod 56 is given a slight lateral play in a slotted opening 59 in the car 58. This rod is normally pressed away from its companion (though obviously it might be pressed toward it) by means of a spring 70, which in the particular construction shown constitutes the near end of the spring 29. The spring 70, presses against one end 71 of 'alever 72, which is fulcrumed at 73 on the plate 2 and carries a pin or projection 74 adapted to bear against the said rod 56. Another spring 75, anchored to the screw 30 and bearing at one end against the car 57 pushes with its other end against the slide 54 and thus tends to restore the detent or tripping device from any adjustedposition to the normal. The releasing of the frictional holding means is effected by the engagement of .the sound arm projection 90 with an outwardly extending portion 76 of the lever 72,; the arrangement being such that outward movement of the sound arm rocks this lever sufliciently to move the pin 74 away from the rod 56,. thereby enabling the latter to lie parallel to the other rod 55 so that the spring 75 is per mitted to restore the slide 5% to normal position.
Means are provided whereby the same swinging action of the sound arm just referred to causes the application of the brake. \Vith this purpose in. view the abutment ledge 60 is cut away or terminated at one end, as indicated at 63, so that when the de tent device is restored to normal position by the spring 7 5, the nose 52 of the detent clears the abutment, and consequently the spring 29 is free to apply the brake.
The foregoing parts are protected and covered by a suitable. case or cover 80, attached to the plate 20 by screws 81'. The cover has a slot 82 in the top thereof through which the arm 51 of the detent projects in position to be contacted by a projection or linger 91 on the sound. arm. The said cover also has openings in its transverse sides through which the slide bar 27, the latch 39 and the extending end 76 of the lever 72 project. The far end of the opening in the case 80 constitutes the limit stop of the brake-retracting lever 36.
The hereinbeiore mentioned projections 90, 91 are carried by a split clamp ring comprising two halves 92, 93. The half 93 has framed therewith a plate 94:, one part of which includes the said projection or finger 91. A slot 95 is also formed in said plate, and a headed nut member is held in said. slot, its sides being flattened to keep it from turi'ring. The said nut member is shown as consisting of a body 96, a head 97 and a countersunk Washer 98 taking over the upper end of the nut-body, which is expanded into the countersunk portion of said washer these last enumerated parts being held together at opposite sides of the plate 91. A screw 99 enters the nut-body 96, and a jaml'i-nut 100 locks this screw with. the nut as well as the latter to the plate. this way a simple effective and adjustable brake-retracting projection is provided.
The engagement between the parts 92,. 93 is efilected at one side by a nose-projection 101 extending from. the half-ring 92 and entering a slot 102 formed in the other halfring 93. At the opposite side of the clampring a bolt 1.03 hinged at 10 1 to the part 93, engages between ears 105 of the part 92, a thumb nut 106 serving to draw the parts together. After the screw 99, with the end thereof which constitutes the projection 90, and also the linger 91 have been properly adjusted, with respect to the cooperating parts on the fixed portion oil. the machine, the clamp-ring halves are positively positioned. on the sound-arm 1 1 by means of set screws 107 threaded into one ofthe ring halves and screwed tightly with their points entering into the metal wall 01 the said sound arm.
The operation of the device is briefly as follows: hen a record disk is placed on the turntable, the latter being at rest with the brake on, the sound arm is swung inward until the needle carried thereby is over the inner end of the sound-field. This manually performed. movement of the sound-arm is powerful enough to cause the finger projection 91 when bearing against the lever arm 51 0f the detent 50 to shift the latter as well as the slide 54: to the appropriate position for tripping the brake for the particular record used. The adjustment of the tripping device is effected against the tension of the spring 7 5, but the latter powerless for the time being to restore said slide to unset position because of the frictional holding means. The sound arm now swung outward into position to permit placing the point of the needle at the inception of the sound groove, and this movement causes the projection 90 to engage the retracting member 36 and thereby take oil the brake. The detent 50 automatically drops into engagement with the abutment so as to hold the brake ofi'. /V'hen the playing oil? the record is finished the sound-arm at the end 01" its inward movement causes the finger 91 to contact with the detent 50, thus tilting the latter out of engagement with the said abutment 60, although without suflicient force to move the slide 54:, on account of the arm beingnow only actuated by the record itself. The detent being tilted the spring 29 shoots the bar 27 and applies the brake. The sound arm next swung outward either to start up the machine for playing the record over again or else is moved as far as it will to permit removal of the record and replacing it by another. The projection 90 actuates the member 36, first to take oflf the brake, which ren'iains inoperative until the said projection strikes the extension 76 of. the lever 72, whereby the tripping mechanism is released and the turntable stopped practically before it has a chance to move. At the same time the tripping mechanism is restored to normal. condition, in readiness to be adjusted by the sound-arm in accordance with the internal diameter 01'' the sound field of the record next to be played.
ll aving described our invention. what we desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a machine of the cha -acter described, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of a. brake, tripping l'llBCllttll-lSfll therefor automatically set for operation at the inner limit of efl'ective t 'avel by inward movement of said member irrespective of the extent of the travel thereof, and automatic means retracting the brake independent of said mechanism when said member is moved back to starting position.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of a spring pressed brake adapted to engage with said element, automatic brake tripping mechanism means whereby said mechanism is set automatically by said member in. accordance with the inner limit of the effective travel thereof, and means rendering the mechanism inactive until the member is swung outward beyond a certain limit.
In a machine of the character described, a rotating element and a traveling member, in combination with a brake retracted by the latter, a brake tripping device, and means set by said member for pr determining the point at which it shall opcrate said tripping device, said means being automaticaly adjusted in accordance with; the inner limit of the effective travel of the member independent of the retraction of the brake.
4. In a machine of the charcter described having a rotating element and a traveling member, the combination of a brake for said element, means for automatically retracting said brake, and a device for holding the brake off, said device being releasable by said member at the end of its course and also shiftable thereby so as to be released at any desired point in the travel thereof independently of the automatic retraction of the brake.
5. Brake mechanism for a machine ofthe character described, having a rotating element and a traveling member, comprising a brake, and means for automatically taking the latter off said element, in combination with a detent adapted to hold said brake off and to be released by said member, and other means whereby said detent may be shifted beforehand by the member so as to predetermine the point in the inward travel thereof at whichit shall release the detent, said latter means being capable of holding the detent in any of its shifted positions for cngagement with the brake.
6. Braking mechanism for a machine of the character described having a rotating element and a traveling member, comprising a brake for said element and a detent for holding the same ofi, a movable support 011 which said detent is mounted, and means on said member for releasingsaid detent and also for bodily moving the latter with its support so as to predetermine the point at wh1ch the detent shall be released.
7. I11 a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotating element and atraveling member, of a brake, automatic brake tripping mechanism, means whereby said member sets said mechanism beforehand so as to predetermine the application of the brake, and other means actuated by the member when swung to its outermost limit of movement to restore the mechanism to an unset condition.-
8. Brake mechanism for a machine of the character described, having a. rotating memher and a traveling member, comprising a brake, an automatic brake-tripping device, means operated by said member for shifting said device beforehand so as to predetermine the application of the brake, frictional holding means for said device, a spring for restoring the latter, and means actuated by the member at its outermost limit of movement for rendering said frictional holding means inoperative.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of an auto matic brake, a brake tripping device, guides on which said device is slidably mounted, and means for canting one of said guides so as to hold said device at the desired adj ustment.

I11 a machine of the character de scribed, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of an automatic brake, a brake-tripping device, a slide on which said device is fulcrumed, a pair of rods for guiding said slide, and rsilient means for relatively and angularly urging said rods with respect to each other so as to hold the slide at the required positon thereon.
11.. In a machine of the character described having a rotating element and a traveling member, a brake, automatic brake tripping mechanism adapted to be operated by said member, means whereby the latter sets said mechanism beforehand in accordance with the inner limit of its effective travel, means capable of holding said mechanism at any adjustment, and means tending to restore the same, in combination with means whereby the member releases said mechanism to be restored to an unset condition and simultaneously causes the tripping of the brake, when the member is swung to its outermost limit of movement.
12. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of a spring actuated brake, means for holding thesame off said element, means whereby said member causes the application of said brake when the member approaches its inner limit of movement and also when it reaches its outermost limit, and other means whereby the member takes off the brake when it is moved outward to a less extent.
13. In a machine of the character described, having a rotating element and a traveling member, a brake and a brake-retracting device, in combination with a projection on said member and a latch on said brake-retracting device, said projection actuating the retracting device when moving in one direct-ion and passing by idly in the reverse direction.
14. In a machine of the character described, having a rotating element and a traveling member, the combination of a brake, a projection on said member, a slide connected with said brake in the plane there of, and a pivoted device in the path ofsaid projection adapted to be urged thereby in said plane to exert a thrust on said slide so as to take the brake off said element.
15. In a machine of the character described, having a rotating element and a traveling member, the combination of a device for automatically actuating brake meclr anism, comprising a collar adapted to be applied to said member, an extension on said collar having a brake-tripping portion, and a brake-retracting proj ection adjustably carried by said extension.
16. In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of a brake, a bralie-retracting device, an attachment on said member having a slot, a nut seated in said slot, a screw passingthreugh said nut and affording a projection for engagement with said brake-retracting device, and a jam-nut on said screw to lock the latter and the first named nut in position 011 sald attachment.
17. In a machine of the character described, a rotating element, a traveling membet, a b 'ake and means for automatically taking it off said element, in. comblnation with a detent separately operative automatically to hold said brake oil', and other means set by said member in accordance with the inner limit oi. the efiective travel whereby the member releases said detent when it ar rives at the end of its travel.
18. Brake mechanism for a machine of the character described having a rotative element and a traveling member, comprising a brake, and means for taking the same o'li said element, in combination with a detent adapted to hold said brake off and to be released by said member, and a brake eonnection with which said detent engages, one of said last named partsineluding a portion extended for engagement with the other part in any of their cooperative positlons.
19. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotating element and a traveling member, of a brake, a tripping device therefor operable by sald member, said device being also shiftable by the member so as to predetermine the application of said brake, and means actuated by the member when in a different position for restoring the device from shifted condition.
20. Brake mechanism for a machine of the character described havinga rotating element and a traveling member, comprising a brake, a tripping device for same, means whereby said member actuates said device at the conclusion of its inward movement, means whereby the device may be shifted beforehand by the member so as to predetermine the actuation thereof, means tending to restore the device to unset condition, means for holding the device at any adjustn1en't,and means whereby the latter is re leased by the member.
21. Brake mechanism for a machine of the character described having a rotating element and a traveling member, comprising a brake, a tripping device therefor adapted to be actuated by said member to cause the application of said brake, said device bcing also slidably mounted and capable of being set for actuation at a predetermined place in the movement of the 1nember, means for binding the device along its course to hold the same at any adjustment, a spring for moving the device back from any point in the course thereof, and means actuated by the member for releasing the device that it may be restored by said sprin In a machine of the character de scribed having a rotating element and a traveling member, a spring actuated brake, a detent adapted to hold the same elf said element, means whereby said detent is re leased itrom said brake by said member in its in ard movement, the detent being also shiftable by the member so as to predetermine the application of the brake, means for holding the detent at any adjustment, means tending to restore the latter from shifted to normal position, a bake cono nected part with which the detent co6p crates irrespective of its adjustment but which it clears when restored to normal position and means whereby the member releases said holding means so as to cause the restoration of the detent and consequent application of the brake when the memberiis swung toward its outermost limit.
In a machine of the character described having a rotating element and a traveling member, the combination of a spring actuated brake, a retracting mechanism therefor adapted to be operated by a projection on said member when the latter is moved near its outer limit of movement, a detent device for holding said brake retracted, means whereby the member releases said device when the former approaches its inne limit of movement, the device being also shiftable beforehand by the member so as to predetermine the application of the brake, a brake connected part with which the device cooperates in its various shifted positions but clears when in normal position, means tending to restore the device, means for holding the device in any shifted position, and means for releasing the device including a portion engaged by a projection on the member when the latter is moved outward beyond brake retracting position.

In a machine of the character described having a rotating element and a travelling lnember, a spring actuated brake for said element, and a projection on said member, in combination with a lever carrying a latch in the path of said projection, and connections between said brake and said lever whereby actuation of the latter by the projection latches the brake off the element.

In a machine of the character de' scribed having; a rotating element and a traveling men'rber, the combination With a brake, a retracting device connected therewith, and a tripping mechanism for said brake, of an attachment on said member, a part carried thereby, a projection adjustable relatively to said part for engagement with said device, and an extenslon also carried bysaid attaclnnent engaging with said 15 mechanlsm.
