VALVE-OPERATING MECHANISM FOR COMBUSTION-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 31, 1518. Serial No. 260,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Bmoxwoon MURRAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Scotstoun, in the county of Renfrew, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improved Valve-Operating Mechanism for Combustion-Engines, and of which the following is the specification.
The invention has for its object to provide improved mechanism for operating tappet valves in combustion engines more especially when these are arranged in a detachable head, the arrangement being such that the head. with its valves and their opperating mechanism may be removed without in any way disturbing the valve mechanism or its setting. A valve-mechanism made according to the invention is also particularly applicable to engines in which the cylinders are en bloc or in en bloc groups.
According to the invention a usual cambearing lay shaft extends along the engine parallel with, to one side of and above the crank-shaft, and is arranged at the lower part of a pocket formed integrally with the cylinder casting. Valve-operating tappet levers, pivoted on a shaft preferably supported from the detachable head at the top of this pocket, descend toward the lay shaft, the cams on which engage their ends, which ends are provided pre erably with tappet rollers. Above the shaft on which they are supported the tappet levers extend upward and inward to engage at their upper ends the stems of valves arranged at an angle to the vertical and opening into the combustion space. Preferably inlet and exhaust valves are thus arranged side-by-side, and there is one lay shaft and one lever-supporting shaft (which, however, may be in several parts). The valve stems and the upper parts of the levers are inclosed in a lateral casing, preferably formed integrally with the detachable head.
An example of the carrying out of the invention in the case of a four-cylinder combustion, engine is shown in two accompanying sheets of drawings'in which Figure 1 Sheet 1 is a sectional side elevation and Fig. 2 Sheet 2 a sectional end elevation.
In this example the valve mechanism is completely inclosed and the usual cam-bearing lay shaft A (driven in usual manner by gearing of any convenient type not shown) lies in the lower art of a lateral pocket B formed integral y with the cylinder casting C. There makes joint with the top of this pocket at the level of the detachable combustion head casting D a lateral extension E of that part. In the pocket B and its extension E are housed the tappet levers F, rollers G on the lower ends of which are engaged by the cams on the lay shafts A, while their upper ends are provided with usual adjustable tappets H. engaging the spindles of the exhaust valves I and the inlet valves J respectively. The tappet levers are loose upon shafts K which are supported in eyebolts L screwed into the lateral part of the head casting D. The lateral pocket E in the head casting is closed by a door M giving access to the valves and their mechanism.
It will be seen that the whole valve mechanism is removable with the detachable head casting without its adjustments being disturbed-the cam shaft A remaining-in position in the ocket B.
What I c aim is 1. In a combustion engine of the type referred to having a detachable head, in combination a pocket extending along the engine and formed integrally with the cylinder casting, a cam-shaft extending longitudinally in and lying at the lower part of said pocket, a continuation of said pocket formed in a lateral extension of the head casting and closed at its top by door means, and tappet levers engaged by cams on the cam shaft and engaging the spindles of valves arranged side-by-side in the cylinder head, and supported on shaft means carried on the head casting, as set forth.
2.. In the combination forming the subject-matter of claim 1 hereof, a tappet-carrying shaft supported in eye-bolts secured in the head casting and depending into the pocket of the cylinder casting as set forth.
