The principal object of this invention is the provision of such a mechanismywhich may be readily and securely set and clamped in position and is provided with a rotatable drilling tool with manualmeans for setting and automatic means for feeding. j
Further objects of this invention include improvements in details of construction and arrangement, whereby a simple and effectively operating mechanism of this character is provided. h 3
To the accomplishment. of the foregoing and such other objects as maylhereinafter appear, our invention consists in. the (3011-. struction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, and then sought to be defined in the appended claims,.reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and which show, merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of ourinvention, it being expressly understood howi ever that various changes may bemade in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from our inventive idea.

Th1s This invention is designed, primarily, to provide a manually operated mechanism, which is portable, and adapted to be set and clamped in position on a railroad rail and to drill holes on a vertical axis into and through the base of the rail, to receive spikes, bolts Or other securing means. This mechanism includes a pair of vertically arranged frames designated by reference characters 10 and 11, respectively, the frame lO supporting the driving mechanism and the frame 11 supporting the drill and its actuating and setting shafts. The frame 10 includes the vertically extending side members 12 wl1ich are connected by transverse members 13. Suitable bearings 14: are provided near the upper end or headof the frame 10 to receive the main power shaft 15 on each end of which is mounted the manually operatedhandle 16. On this shaft 15 is provided the bevel gear 17 a which meshes with a similar bevel gear 18 on the upper end of the. vertical shaft 19, which is journaled in suitable bearings 20 provided on the transverse members 13 of frame 10. On the lower end ofthis vertical shaft .19 we mount the driving gear 21. The lower ends of the side members 12 of the frame 10 are provided right angled extensions 22, by meansof which theframes 10 and 1 1 are connected together. the tool may be set properly prior to its actuation andthen when actuated shaft 30 will operate to feed the tool properly into the material. This is accomplished by means of the gear 32 which is threaded on the shaft 30. Gear 32 meshes with gear 33 on the lower end of the vertical shaft 34 on the upper end of Which is the actuating handle 35. This provides means for a comparative quick raising and lowering of the shaft 30 and consequently drill tool 28 in setting the tool orinreleasing the same from the work.
To feed the tool during thevdrilling operation, gear 32 is rotated step by step, which results in a slowlowering of shaft 30 and drill tool 28, and this is accomplished by means of the dog 36 pivotally connected to an extension 37 of the vertical rod or shaft'38, a spring 39 being provided to permit the dog to click or idle in one direction. This rod or shaft 38 is journaled in suitable bearings on one side of the frame '11 and at its lower end is provided with the arm 40 having on its end a roller which engages with the cam 31 previously described as con nected to gear 31 to move therewith. It is, therefore, seen'that as the shaft 27 is driven by means of gear 31-, earn 31 will engage the roller on the end of arm 40 and cause the pawl or dog 36 to move the gear 32 a slight distance for each revolution and consequently move the shaft 30, Step by step.
" An important feature of this invention "resides in the manner and means of supporting'and clamping this mechanism in position for operation. A foot member 41 is secured to each side of the frame 11 and extends downwardly therefrom. This foot member has a toe part 42 which is adapted to fit between the base and the under side of'the head of the rail, a recess 43 being for-med in the foot member to receive part of the head This foot member is also provided with a shoulder 44 formed by said recess'43 which is adapted'to rest on part of the upper surface or tread of the head of the rail. These parts are fixed or secured immovably to said frame 11.

Each pair of foot members 41 and 46 are securely held in their clamping and locking position by means of the locking link 49, these being in the form of loop members having the spaced apart side members 50 between which the foot members 41 and 46 are positioned, these side members 50 be ing provided with openings theretlu'ough, adapted to receive the locking wedges 51, the inclined sides 52 of which engage the foot members 46 and operate to force the parts together in secure clamping engagement with the rail. These wedge members 52 may be secured to the mechanism by means of a chain or similar flexible connection 53 to reduce the liability of their loss.
In setting up the mechanism for operation, it is seen that the foot members 41 are placed in position on one side of the rail and then the hinged foot members 45 are dropped in their proper position. The locking links 49 are then placed and locked in position bv means of the wedge members 51, as is well understood. The mechanism is then in position for operation and the drill nism for drilling holes on a vertical axis, preferably 111 the base of a railroad rail.
This mechanism may be quickly and securely set up in position and just as quickly taken down or released from operating position. 7
Having described our claim is 1. A mechanism of the character described including in combination a supporting means having a drill tool mounted therein on a vertical axis, driving means for actuating said drill tool, means for setting and feeding said drill tool, means for holding said mechanism in position on a rail including two pairs of spaced apart foot members each having a part adapted to engage the rail on said drill tool being disposed between said pairs of foot members, and means for clamping said opposed pairs of foot members to opposite sides of and in contact with the vertical web of the rail.
A mechanism of the character described incuding in combination, a supporting means, a drill tool mounted therein on a vertical aXis, driving means for actuating said tool, means for setting and feeding said drill tool, and means for holding said mechanism in position on a rail, including a plurality of pairs of foot members; arranged on invention, what we Cir opposite sides of the rail and spaced apart, the drill tool being located between said pairs of foot members, each pair of foot members comprising one rigidly connected to said supporting means and the other pivotally connected thereto, each foot member having a toe portion adapted to fit between the base and the under side of the head of the rail, each foot member also having a cut out recess to embrace part of the head of the rail and to form a shoulder to overlie and rest upon the top surface or tread of the rail and a link extending over the top of the rail heads for clamping said opposed pairs of foot members to opposite sides of the rail.
8. A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a supporting means, a drill tool mounted therein on a vertical axis, driving means for actuating said tool, means for setting and feeding said topics of this patent may be obtained for drill tool, and means for holding said mechpairs of foot members, each pair of foot members comprising one rigidly connected to said supporting means and the other pivotally connected thereto and means for clamping said opposed pairs of foot members to opposite sides of the rail, said clamping means including a link member formed with spaced side portions adapted to embrace said foot members and having a wedge connected thereto adapted to engage certam of said foot members to move them into engagement with the sides of the rail.
