Application'filed November 1, 1917. Serial no. 199,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARDO SANonnz, a citizen of the Republic of Cuba, and a resident of Habana, Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Operating Mechanism for Dental Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates broadly to dental apparatus, and more particularly to a dental engine and a casing therefor. p
The principal object of the invention is to provide a compact dental engine and casing which may be readily transported from place to place, the casing constituting a container for receiving the ordinary dentists tools. a
A further objectof the present invention is to provide a dental engine adapted to be operated by hand, thereby increasing its range of usefulness.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a dental engine havlng a combined driving and balance Wheel, so constructed that smooth runningof the engine while in operation is insured, the balance wheel being adapted to receive a supplemental staff upon which suitable tools may be placed. a
Still another object of the; present invention is to so construct the casing that it serves as a bracket for supporting the drilling apparatus while in use. a
These and other objects together with their attendant advantages will beobvious as the invention becomes better understood by reference to the accompanying specification, and drawings forming apart thereof, throughout the several views of which like characters of reference have been used to indicate like parts. U 1
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my apparatus assembled for i use the motor casin bein 0- on to ex ose the motor.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the motor casing.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the apparatus showing the tool bracket folded for shipping.
Fig. l is a detail view of the driving pulley balance wheel and tool shaft.
Fig, 5 is a detail view of one of the antifriction bearings. v
It has heretofore been customary to utilize a suitable electric motor in connection ovith apparatus erdmariiy need rm.
dentists office. Such an apparatus is not adapted for, transportation from place to place as may be necessary in case the dentist decldes to visit the'patient. Different types ofratchet operated motors adapted to be held in the hand have been devised for overcoming this obgection. Such motors have,
however, not been so constructed that a smooth running of the drill was insured, and they have not been useful in connection with the ordinary flexible drivingcordscommonly employed. Spring motors wound by handhave also been devised for use as contemplated by the applicant, but they have been objectionable also in the manner above set forth. With applicants construction a a portable smooth running motor useful in connection with the ordinary flexible driving cord, and capable of receiving different tool attachments as may be required by the operator, is provided.
ings, my invention comprises a suitable casing- 1 having a cover2 hingedly mounted thereon. The interior of the casing is preferably divided into two compartments A and B by means of a'partition member l. The compartment A is intended for use as a tool container when the device is being carried from place to place. It is also so constructed that the tubular telescopically interlocking members 5 forming a bracket support for the drilling apparatus may be placed therein. The bracket. preferably comprises a member 6 pivotally secured to the motor a casing and adapted to be swung into positionlongitudinally thereof as shown in Fig. 1 for receiving the members 5, or to be swung to a position transversely of the easmg so that the devicemay be conveniently shipped. The pivotal mounting 7 permits a swmging movement of the bracket arm when in use, thereby enabling the dentist to manipulate the tool as found necessary. The outer member 5 carries adjustable coupling 7 for the tube 8 containing any well known type of flexible shaft 9.
For driving the flexible shaft there is provided in the compartment B a hand motor M. The motor is illustrated as comprising a driving crank l0suitably secured to the shaft 11 carrying a driving pinion 12 meshing with the com aratively large gear 14 on the shaft 15. or producing a coinperativaly high speed apart rotation the Referring more particularly to the drawcrank 10, the gear list is preferably in mesh with the small gear 16 on shaft 17. The gear 16 in turn transmits motion through the gears 18 to the shaft 19 as apparent from the drawings. In order .to increase .the ease of operation of the motor, each of the shafts is preferably journaled in suitable anti-friction bearings 20 carried by the motor casing.
It is apparent that due to the difficulty of uniformly turning the crank 10, that it is almost impossible to operate the motor at a uniform speed unless an inertia or momentum device is provided. In the present embodiment of my invention 1 have illus trated the inertia device as comprising a balance wheel 21 having a belt pulley 29 cast integral therewith. The balance wheel may be secured detachably on the outer end of the shaft 19 by providing a reduced p0r tion 23 threaded at its extreme end to receive' a lock nut 24. I
In order that a staff 25 may be readily secured to the balancewheel in such manner that a polishing or grinding element 26 may be mounted thereon, the face of the balance wheel is preferably countersunk to receive the nut 24. The staff 25 is in turn provided with an enlarged disklike base 27 adapted to overlie the counter-sunk portion of the balance wheel to which it is secured by means of the fastening devices 28. The staff 25 is preferably cone-shaped so that the tools may be quickly applied thereto and firmly held in position. lVhen so attached, the parts all function as a bal- 7 ance wheel, and insure smooth operation of the motor.
tus, and at the same time containing a.
motor for operating the drilling apparatus. The balance Wheel and tool holding staff carried thereby provide a rotating mass the inertia of which produces the smooth running qualities of the motor, thereby permitting the dentist to operate the same with ease and accuracy;
\Vhile I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be ohvious that changes may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
1. A portable hand power dental apparatus, comprising a casing, a sectional bracket pivotally mounted on said casing at one side thereof, a flexible shaft operatively supported by said bracket, a partitiondividing said casing into two compart ments, one of said compartments being adapted to receive the sections of said bracket, a hand motor in the other of said compartments and provided with operating means located at the opposite side of the casing from that at which the bracket is mounted and means for tlilD-Sll'llttlllg power from the motor to said shaft.
2. A portable hand power dental apparatus, comprising a casing, a collapsible bracket pivotally mounted on said casing at one side thereof, a flexible shaft operatively supported by said bracket, a hand motor for driving said flexible shaft having operative means located at the opposite side of the casing from that at which the bracket is located, said motor comprising a gear train adapted to impart a high speed to said shaft, and a balance wheel for said motor and located at the side of the casing at which the bracket is arranged.
3. A hand power for dental apparatus, comprising a driving shaft, a train of gears adapted to impart a high speed of rotation to said shaft, a balance wheel mounted on said shaft at one end thereof and provided with an exterior recess. means located in the recess for securing the balance wheel to theshaft, and a tool receiving staff having a base covering the said recess of the balance wheel and provided with means for securing it to the said balance wheel.
