Description
J. D. McFARLAND.
SURGICAL SWAB.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 14. 1919.
Patent-edSept. 2,1919.
INVE NT UR J.D.McFaflan1 ATTORNEY 'ilNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN D. ivrcr'nnnmvn. on snnours, mrssounr.
SURGICAL To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN D. MGFARLAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Surgical 'Swab, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will en able any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a surgical swab and more particularly to that class of swabs neck which is broken oil in order to allow' the escape of the medicament into theabsorbent material. The objections to such swabs are two fold. First, the breaking of the frangible neck is likely to form splinters of glass which will work through the absorbent material and enter the wound treated. Second, such swabs can be only used once. The object of my invention is to provide a swab which will overcome both these difliculties...
In the. accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of surgical swab made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a side view showing the swab proper in position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the swab proper replaced by a cap or seal. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, and Fig. 4. is a plan view of the blank from which the swab holder is formed.
5 indicates the receptacle or container for the medicament to be applied which medicament is preferably an antiseptic such for instance as tincture of iodin. The receptacle is formed of glass and is provided with a neck 6 whichis externally threaded and has formed in it a discharge passage 7. When the swab is not inuse, this discharge passage 7 is adapted to be sealed by an internally threaded cap 8 as shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of the neck 6 is beveled as indicated at 9, Figs. 1 and 3. This beveled Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1919. Serial I To. 289,996.
portion of the neck is adapted to be engaged by the 'innernon-threaded edge of an annular member IOwhich member is provided w th arms 11 carrying at their outer ends w1ngs 12adapted to clamp aftuft 13 of absorbent material such, for instance, as surglcal gauze, intermediate of its length so as to d vide it into an outwardly extending medicament applying portion and an inwardly extending portion held over the orifice of the discharge passage 7 to receive the medlcament. I
When the device is not in use, the discharge passage 7 is sealed by the cap 8.. When it is desired to use the device thecap 8 is replaced by the annular member 10 which can be engaged with the beveled end of the neck 6 by a slight turning movement. The swabproper is thus held in position to receive'the medicament fromthe container 5. After the device has been used, the swab proper can be removed and the receptacle again sealed bythe cap 8. e
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a receptaclefor a medicament provided with a discharge opening,of aremovable seal for said opening, a holder interchangeable with said seal, and a swab of absorbent material carried by said holder.
2. The combination with a receptacle for a medicament provided with a threaded portion having formed therein a dischar e passage, of a threaded seal for closing said passage, and a swab interchangeable with said seal, said swab comprising a holder adapted to engage with the threaded portion of the receptacle, and a tuft of absorbent material carried by said holder.
3. The combination with a receptaclefor a medicament provided with a threaded portion having formed therein a discharge passage, of a threaded seal for closing said passage, and a swab interchangeable with said seal, said swab comprising a nonthreaded holder adapted to engage with the threaded portion of the receptacle, and a tuft of absorbent material carried by said holder.
4. The combination with a receptacle for a medicament provided with a threaded portion terminating in a beveled end and having formed therein a discharge passage, of a threaded cap for closing said passage, and p to said receptacle, said swab comprising an annular member, arms carried by' said annularymember, and a tuft of absorbent material clamped between said arms.
6 .,;The combination with a receptacle for a med-icament provided with a portion having a discharge passage therein, a cap for said passage engaging with said part, and
a swab interchangeable with said cap, said.
swab comprising an annular member, arms carried by said annular member, and a tuft of'abso-rbent material clamped between said arms.
7; The combination with a receptacle for a medicament provided with a portion having a discharge passage therein, a seal for saidpassage, and a swab interchangeable with said seal,- said'swab' comprising an an nular member, arms carried by said annu-- lar member, anda tuft of absorbent material'clamped between said arms, said tuft comprising a medicament applying portlon extending beyond the arms, and a medicament receiving portion situated between the arms and theend of the discharge passage.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 8.v The combination with a receptacle for a medicament provided with a discharge opening, of a swab adapted to be applied to the receptacle, said swab comprising a tuft of absorbent material, and a holder clam-ping said tuft intermediate of its length and holding the inner end thereof over the discharge opening.
9'. The combination with a receptacle for a medicament provided with a threaded portion having a discharge passage therein, a cap for the discharge passage, and a swab interchangeable with said cap, said swab comprising a non-threaded annular member adapted to engage with said threaded portion, arms carried by said annular member, and a tuft of absorbent material clamped between said arms, said tuft comprising a medicament applying part extending beyond the arms and a medicament receiving portion situated between the arms and the end of the discharge passage.
10. A swab for applying antiseptics or the like comprising an annular member provided with an aperture for attaching it to a holder, arms carried by said annular member, and a tuft of absorbent material clamped between said arms.
11. A swab for applying antiseptics or the like comprising an annular member of sheet metal provided with an aperture for attaching it to a holder, a pair of arms formed integral with said annular member andbent out of the plane thereof, and a tuft of absorbent material clamped between said arms.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal.
