Description

UNITED STATES PATENT .Trroa RICHARD H. BACOT, OF ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO A. B. THOMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN REINHOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ISL-192, dated September 24, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. Bncor, of St. Charles, county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Line and Rein Holders, of which the following is a specification: Y
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in devices for holding or securing lines or reins, and the invention consists in the arrangement of a cam carried or pivoted on a standard projected from a metallic plate in such manner that the line or rein to be held may be slipped between the periphery of the cam and the upper face of the plate, where it will be securely held, the frame and standard being constructed in such shape and so arranged as to produce a cheap and effective article ot' manufacture, and to adapt it to convenient use in many situations, where other devices of the same class would not be practical, all as hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in position on the end board or vdashboard of a wagon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1 on the line x.
A in the drawing represents the frame or plate which carries the other parts of my invention, and it consists of two parts, A A', at right angles with each other, onepart, A', being pierced with holes a a a, through which screw-nails may be inserted to hold it securely in place. B is a standard rising vertically from the upper or horizontal plate A, and its upper half bent over and parallel with the plate A. C is a cam hung on the horizontal part of the standard B as a journal, as plainly shown at Fig. 2. The lower face of the cam C is serrated, as shown, to cause it to hold more securely. D is a projection from the upper side of the plate A.
The operation of my inventiony is as follows: The construction of the frame A, as shown, is particularly adapted for attachment to dashboards of wagons, 85e., for the purpose of holding the driving-reins, which are simply passed from the left-hand or open side under the cam C, which, dropping thereon by its own gravity, will hold the lines securely from being drawn out, the projection D and vertical part of the standard B serving to hold the lines securely from slipping out sidewise when slack. It will be plainly seen that this device allows the reins or lines to be passed under the cam from one side and removed in the same way without drawing them through endwise. The lower part of the plate A may be varied in form to adapt it to ease and convenience of attachment to various places. It may be attached to harness and used as a check-rein holder without punching holes in the cheek-rein and thereby weakening it.
I am aware that serrated cams pivoted to plates so as to operate as line-holders have before been invented, and are in common use. I do not therefore claim such as my invention.
What I claim isi The plate A, having the projection D on one side and the standard B on the other, with the cam C pivoted horizontally between them, so that the reins may be conveniently slipped in and out through the opening between the cam and the projection D, and be held securely endwise by the cam, as set forth.
Witnesses: RICHD. H. BACOT.
