To' all whom it may concemi Be 1t known that I, JOHN L. Ponlmn, a
bine with the carbureter means for locking the controlling valve after the latter has been turned so as to shut off the flow of fuel .to the carbureter and engine.
The invention furthermore aims to provide means whereby any carbureter in use may be rendered safe, thereby against theft, or unauthorized use 0 a pleasure car or other motor-driven vehicle.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the'same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form,- proport on, and minor details "any approved typ of construction may e resorted to without departing from the nfature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.-

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral -1 designates acarbureter of e or design such as com monly employed mconnection wi hinternal combustion engines for vaporizng liquid fuel. The numeral 2 indicates the feed pipe which conveys the liquid fuelfrom a source of supply to the carburetor.- In accordance with the present invention, a combined cutoff valve and lock is interposed between the feed pipe 2 and the carbureter, and is at tached to the carbureter in any way .to form practically a part thereof. When adaptino the invention'to carbureters 1n the course 0 arding manufacture,the combined valve andlock casing will be constructed as a part of the carbureter, and whenadaptin the invention to a carbureter in use or on t e market, 'the casing of the controlling valve and lock I mechanism will be brazed, welded, or otherwise connected to the body of the carburetor so as to be practically inseparable therefrom.
The casing for the valve and lock mechanism is indicated by the numerals 3 and 4,
said parts bein indicated for convenience as being separab e to admit of ready assem-' blage of the 006 crating parts. A plug valve 5 1s mounte in an opening formed in the casing 3 and its projecting end is constructed to receive a key 'by means of which the same may be turned. The casing 4 is formed with a recess 6 which receives the lock mechanism, the same comprising a keyoperated barrel 7 and a plurality of tumb ers 8 which are shown as of the lever type and ivotall mounted upon ain 9. The tumb ers 8 ave their free en bent and adapted to extend through an opening 10 formed in the side of the casing 3 adjacent the recess side 6 of the casing 4. The valve 5 is provided in its side with an o ening or recess 11 to receive the active on s of the tumblers 8 wherebythe valve is locked when turned to shut off the flow of fuel to the carbureter. The casing elements 3 and 4 are adapted to be connected in any manner to revent their ready separation after being assembled thereby guarding against tampering with the lock mechanism.
It is to be understoodthat a lock mechanism of any design. may be utilized, and that such lock mechanism ma comprise any number of tumblers depen ing upon the security to be obtained and the cost of the safety appliance. -The formof lock mechanism illustrated is preferred because of its extreme simplicity and the minimum number of parts embodied in its organization.
In practice, when the valve 5 is turned into open position to admit of the fuel passing freely from the source of supply to the carburetor, the motor vehicle may be operated when necessary, but when it is desired to secure the advantages of the invention, the valve 5 is turned by means of a suitable key, not shown/sous to cut off the supply of fuel to the carbureter, and when the valve is thus positioned, the recess or opening 11 is brought in po.--ition to register with the active endsof the tumblers 8 and the latter are prevent the passage of fuel therethrough.
