CARLBURETER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed November 12, 1917. Serial No. 201,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN H. V. FINN-BY and SAMUEL A. WALKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Boulder, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbureter Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs. j
This invention relates to certain improvements in carburetor attachments, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character adapted to be inserted between the carbureter and the in take and which is provided with novel and improved means whereby heavy particles of fuel which maybe drawn from the carbureter are effectively broken up or comminuted and thereby improving the mixture, saving fuel and resulting in the engine running smooth and starting easy.
The invention 'consistsin the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved carbureter attachment wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less .expensive and otherwise more convenient and advan tageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through an attachment constructed in accordance with our invention, the co-acting parts of the intake and carbureter being shown in fragment;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Flg. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through one of the parts or sections of the casing as herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings our improved attachment consists of a casing comprising two sections or members M of duplicate construction. Each .of the members M comprises a plate 1 having produced at its axial center an opening 2 adapted to register with either the intake I or outlet of the carbureter C. The marginal portion of the plate 1 is defined by a latto contact whereby an inclosed casing -or housing is afforded. The inner faces of each of the flanges 3 have its marginal portion defined by an annular recess4 in which is adapted to seat a marginal portion of an annular member 5. The member 5 is preferably formed of copper so that when the members M are in assembled relation the joint at the contacting edges of the flanges 3 will be sealed. Each of the sections or members M is provided with a diametricall opposed ear 6 provided with the slots through which are adapted to be directed the clamping bolts 8 which also co-act in a conventional manner with the flanges 9 arranged at the adjacent ends of the intake I and the outlet of the carbureter C. Each of the flanges 3 adjacent its inner end is provided with an annular shoulder 10 upon which is adapted to contact the marginal portion of a disk 11. In practice we find it of advantage to employ six disks 11 in. superimposed relation although we do not wish to be understood as limiting our selves to this exact number. Each of the disks 11 is provided with theperforations or restricted openings 12 and as illustrated in Fi 1 it is to be noted that when in assem led relation the openings 12 of the disks 11 are so arranged that the openings 12 in one disk will be exposed to a solid portion of the disk or disks immediately adjacent thereto so that the mixture will pass through our improved attachment in a staggered path of travel so that breaking up or comminuting of any heavy particles of fuel in the mixture is assured.
We also find it of advantage to interpose between the marginal portions of adjacent disks 11, when in assembled relation, the expansible washers 14 preferably formed of Wire and suitably crimped. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the washers 14 will permit the disks 11 to be sufliciently compacted to properly fit within the assembled sections or members M, at the same time maintaining said disks 11 in separated relation.
The flange 3 of each of the sections or members M is provided with a transversely disposed and inwardlv directed rib or key 15 which is adapted to be seated within a notch 16 produced in the periphery of each of the disks 11 and thereby holdin Lelia disk against rotation. As herein em odied may be reversed one relative to the other so that the openings 12 in one disk will be in operated and it staggered relation relative to the openings in the second disk as has hereinbefore been referred to.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a carbureter attachment constructed .in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility wlth which it may be assembled and will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of'some change and modification Without materially departing from the principles and spirit thereof andfor this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim: 1. A device of the character described comprising a casing, opposed Walls of said casing being provided with openings per- \IIGSSBS.
naeasrr forate disks arranged within the casing in superimposed relation, crimped washers interposed between the mar inal portions of the disks for maintaining t e samein spaced relation, and means for holding said disks against rotation independently of the caslng.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing, opposed end walls of said casing being provided with" openings, an inwardly( directcd rib extending longitudinallyof the side wall of the casing, separable perforate disks arranged withln the casing in superimposed relation, the marginal portions of said disks being provided with notches to receive the key of the casing whereby said disks are held, against rotation independently of the casing, and means separable from the disks and the casing and interposed between the marginal portions of the disks for maintaining said disks in separated relation.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two Wit- JOHN H; v. FlNNE-Y. SAMUEL A. WALKER.
