TENT-FRAME-- y To all` whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. Sor11- MAoHER, a citizen rof the United States, re-
siding at East Rockaway, county of Nassau, `State of New York, have invented cer-` tain new and useful Improvements in Tent- Frames.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of portable or knock-down tent frames and consists of and put together and which will render a tent warm, dry and able to withstand heavy winds without blowing` down.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view' of a tent frame for regulation army `oilicers tent, constructed in accordance with .y
my invention showing part of the .waterproof canvas or like material with whlch the front, sides and lower back sections of the tent` frame are covered. Fig. 2 shows a all the sections of the tent frame construct- 45 ed in accordance with my invention will t. y Fig. 3 shows the upper port1on of the back of the tent frame showing the oblique roof supports and the brace for same and illustrating the manner in which the brace and the oblique roof supports fold so as to be practically parallel with the ridge pole sup-` port for shipment. Fig. 4 is a front view partly in elevation and partly in plane of the right hand front corner of the tent frame shown inFig. l. Fig. 5 is a side y view of the same corner shown in Fig. 4.

' Specieation of Letters Patent; Patented Sept. 2, 1919.`
Application led February 11, 1918. Serial No. 216,508.
Fig. 6 isa sectional view of the corner` shown in Figs. 4 and 5 taken on the dotted Figs.` 4, `5' and 6 sh'ow in detail the method oiattachiug the frame members together and the method of Joining the sections together.
Referring by `numerals to the said drawfloor 1 as shown in Fig. 1 is 'foldable with the sidelsections ofthe tentframe intol four parts, the side Sections being attached to the `Hoor by hinges 2,.Figs. l and 4, and the sec` tions of floor being joined together with h1nges 2 as shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2. y `In the hinges used for this'purposc I use slip pins or cotter pins so that sections are detachable sections. 43 are the upper horizontal mem- 42 are the lower horizontal `members of the left and right upper front bers of the left and right front upper sections. 5 are oblique braces used in lower frame` sections. In the particular form or construction shown 1n Fig. 1, themembers of the frame sections are joined together` by horizontal members 4 and 4 to the vertical members 3 by use of metal corner plates 20, using plates on both sldes oi the iframe members and bolting through the 'frame and the plates with stove bolts 4111s shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. In constructing frame sections where oblique braces are used as in Fig. '5, I join the vertical members 3 and the horizontal members 4 and 4 by using metal plates40 lon the top and bolting the frame members as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 and metal plates 19 on the bottom and bolting through the frame membersr The lower horizontal members4` of the upper right and left front sections are joinedto the `oblique frame members l1 by metal platcsl and bolts substantially as shown in Figs. l, 4 and. 5. 6 are vertical members of door frame-Fig. 1. 7 are horizontal members of door frame-Fig 1,*-6 and 7 being joined. at upper and lower corners by metal corner plates substantially the same yas 20 bolted through .the l.door frame members. 25" are `metal hangers attached to door` frame upon `which to hang door-Fig. 1,
an ordinary blind hinge or similar suitable.
Vhinge being used for this purpose. p 8` are horizontal' and 9 are vertical members of door, Fig. l, the lower section of 'the door` in practice being covered with waterproof canvas or like material tacked: on or'other-'l wise suitably attached or applied tothe frame and the upper section havinginserted `therein a window 10 composed of s mallpanes y of flexible Celluloid or'like material stitched of upper front sections supporting ridgef pole 12, the ridge pole being braced by oblique braces 13-Fig. 1, suitably attached by metal plates and bolts.
14 is a vertical member of upper `'rear section, *ormingrear support for ridge pole y and back of tent frame as shownv in Fig,
Vwith 14 for shipment.
` ment.
12and supporting rear oblique rafters .or
supports for rear of tent-Fig TheV oblique rafters 15' are attachedto vertical support 14 at its upper endlby metjal" plate- 43 and bolts, substantially as shown in Fig.
3. By detaching 15 at theirlower endsl` and 'l detaching brace 16at 22.*the` rafters lo swing upon the bolts'by which theyare atv ytached` at 43, 'andthebrace 16 rotates upon bolt yat 23 so that all are practicallyp'arallel 17 shows swinging or oldaible bracket supporting shelf-Fig'. 1. Shelf 39 is constructed along both sides 1 and is so arranged by means ofl hinges 18 on vertical frame members as to fold down flat against the back and sides of tent frame when sections are detached`- for vshipstantial brace for the tent frame and adds to its'rigidity.:7 19, 20, 21 and 40l are y:metalA platesvused in fastening rame'-membeis to-j` Igether substantially :as shown in'Figs. 1 4 5 and 6, plates lbeing placed on both sides of frame. members and bolted together,
through the4 frame memlbers by means kof sto-vebolts 41, substantially as shown. 24 arelong stove bolts used as shown in Fig. 1 in 'fasteningtogeth'er the -frame sections.
44 shows covering of waterprooi"canvas,v oil cloth or `like material suitably `applied to lower frame section-Figal. VAIn con;
structing a tent frame as'shown in. Figfl,
Copies of this patent may ne obtained for When in horizontal position and supported by brackets 17 lat suitable, places' on vertical frame members itforms a'sub-y lacing, tacking on or otherwise suitably attaching the material to the frame sections.`
I prefer toattach the coveringso that it vcan be easily removed for ventilation or be re?l placed by screening in .warm weather.
A tent supported by a frame constructed Y I cover all the lower sections of the frame and the` upperfront sectionswith water-v 1 proof canvas, oil cloth or like material, by
Vin accordance with` yinvention as: deffvk scribed, with sections covered and door and windows inserted as described i-srendered warm, dry vand weather prooi". It is stroi'igl and rigidl enough to be moved with'outtakly ing it apart or if vnecessary theframe can be quickly taken apart either in sections'as shown or can be knocked down by removing bolts andthe frame and tentpacked inbox formed by 'oldable floor for shipment. yThe frame has the advantage of being very light,- 'I the `tent and framey packedy for shipment i weighing much less than a portable wooden structure of the sam'e size. The frame can be quickly and easily erectedy and does not suffer damage from Ibeing Itaken apart *and put together if ordinary ca'reis used. The
ltent'frame can be used without floor as well ff.
In constructing the tent frame all outer as withV floor. f
edgesy of framev memberswhich `come in.` contact with the tent when placed over the y frame are rounded and renderedsmooth shown infFigs. 4 yand 5 so as not to chafe and wear the tent.
vHaving thus described y my invention;
what I claim as'new,.and `desirefto secureH by Letters Patent is:
In Va* tent trama-vertical, horizontal 'I and oblique frame members detachably joined so as to form frame Vsections-frame secs tions detachably joined to form tent frame,l f f a floorin sections foldalble with theside frame sections so asto' form a box or crate to contain the entire vframeand tent, tent roof siipportingframe members composed of a ridge pole supported in front by ob-1 lique front section rafters and upper, front sections, and in therearfby yvertical central frame member and oblique rafters suitably attached to rear corners of ktent frame .andV
'foldably attached to to-p of vertical` supportingy member;4 frame "members rounded on. their outer edges to prevent chafing tent,
substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set I i my `hand in witnesses.
