Description
G'. B. MASSEY.
Improvement in Heel-Plates for Boots and Shoes.
N0.'131,452. I Patented Sep. 17, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
cannon B. MASSEY, on New YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEEL-PLATES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 131,452, dated September 17, 1872; antedated September venteda new and useful Improvement in lite-- volving Heel-Plate for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawin gformin g part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in revolving heel-plates for boots and shoes; and consists in the combination of a fasteningscrew, conical washer, elastic disk, and revolving flanged metallic plate, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents the heel-plate as applied to the boot, but showing it in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a metallic plate, having a hole in its center and a dovetail flange, B, on its outer edge, as seen in Fig. 1. O is a disk, of rubber or other elastic material, of a diameter to fit within the flange B, and of sufficient thickness to project below the flange and form the wearing-surface of the heel. D is the fasteningscrew, which passes through the center of the rubber disk. E is a conical metallic washer or expander, which is of a size and form to fit the under side of the screw-head. As the screw is turned into the heel for fastening the plate the conical washer will be forced into the rubber disk, and force its edge into the dovetail groove of the plate. This holds the edge of the rubber securely to the metallic plate. The screw-head penetrates the rubber disk so that the disk forms the wearing-surface of the heel.
It will be seen that the heel-plate, thus formed, will revolve on the screw, the wearing-surfaces being metallic, as the conical washer E will be fast or stationary in the disk. As the wearer turns upon his heel the plate will partially revolve and change its position, and the result will be the heel will wear square and the foot will consequently be thrown squarely upon the sole, thus greatly increasing the durability of both heel and sole. The rubber heel prevents slipping on the ice and adds to the elasticity and gracefulness of the step, while carpets are not injured by projecting nails or sharp angles.
I am aware that a revolving heel with rubber wearing-surface is not novel. I therefore disclaim such a heel; but I am not aware that a conical metallic expanding washer has been heretofore used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent The combination of the revolving flanged metallic plate A, rubber disk 0, conical expanding washer E, and fastening or pivot screw D, arranged substantially as specified.
