Our inv'ention relates to motor structures, and it; has: special reference to axle dust guards, such as are employed' on railway motors for the purpose oflpre ventingzdust andr dirt from; workingrinto the ends of the axle bearings}.

Heretofore, it K been customary to pro vide the 'motor with an integral and more or less bulky flange" whichrextended between the: axle braokets,-. and=tosecure thereto a guard of'she'et metal which isadapted to envelop the exposed" portion of the axle between'xthe'ax-rle seats. This construction in volved excessive material,- was bullcy, and,
moreover, required expensive machine work to insure atight joint between the flange" and 'the sheet metal guard;
According to our present invention, we propose to eliminate the abovementioned flange and to provide. aisplit' tubular dust guard of sheet material=whiohfishall completely surround the axle between the side bearings and slrall-project' slightly into the ends of the axle seats and be positionedthereby.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of railway motor embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a view, partially in section and partially in side elevation, of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view, partially in section and partially in end elevation, of our dust guard and its associated axle cap and bracket, the section being taken along the lines IIIIII of Fig. 2.
Referring tothe drawing, theapparatus showncomprises:arailway motor 1 having side bearings 2 and 3 for receivingan axle 4 which is enveloped by a dust guard: 5 throughout thatportion thereof which extends between the' side' bearings.
The motor 1 pertains only indirectly to ourpresent invention, so far as-its structural details are concerned, and, therefore, may beof any well-known construction. a
The motor 1' has associated integrally therewith a plurality of side axle brackets 7 and 8 which are locatcd'at substantially the respective ends of the motor. Cooperating with these axle brackets 7 and 8 are detachable cap memberst) and 1O that are adapted tobe-bolted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto to form seats for bearing members-or brasses 12 and 13. Withinthe cooperating parts-7, 8 and-9 and 10, which constitute the seats, the split bearingimemhers-12 andlBwn-e disposed inaccordance with the usualpractice, and said bearing members 12- and 13 reccive the axle 4 and provide suitable bearing. surfaces therefor. The bearingmembers 12 and13 ares01ne what shorter in length than the axle caps and brackets of the axle seats and, hence, provide slight recesses or annular openings 15 at the inner ends thereof: These recesses 15 are adapted to receive the respective outer ends 16 of the tubular dust guard 5, which surrounds the axle tbetween' thebearings 2 and3 and is interposed between the inner ends of the respective bearing members 12 and-13. The inner ends of the integral axle brackets 7 and 8 are provided with diametrically opposite and inwardly projecting lugs 18 and 19-for a purpose to be hereinafter set-forth.
The dust guard 5 comprises a pair of semicylindrical sheet metal r members 20 'and 21, therlongitudinal edges of which are placed in abutting relation and are maintained in position preferably by means of strips 23 and 24: which overlap the joints and are spot-welded to the half 21 of the dust guard, or are otherwise suitably fastened thereto. The respective ends of the strips 23 and 24: are provided with notches 25 for the purpose of receiving the axle bracket lugs 18 and 19 whereby the tubular dust guard 5 is restrained against turning.
Assuming the detachable axle caps 9 and 10 and the bearing members 12 and 13 to be removed and the motor 1 to be positioned upon the axle l, the assembly of parts is as follows: The dust guard member 21, with its associated strips 23 and 24:, is first disposed around the inner portion of the axle 4, with its respective ends 16 located in the recesses 15 of the axle brackets 7 and 8, after which the rear halves of the split bearing members 12 and 13 are put in place. The other half of the dust guard member 20 and the remaining halves of the split bearing members 12 and 13 are then positioned, and the detachable axle caps 9 and 10 are assembled and rigidly clamped to the integral axle brackets 7 and 8 by suitable bolts.
Variationsin the structural details and arrangement and location of parts may be effected without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention. e, therefore, desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a dynamo-electric machine, the C0111- bination with a frame having side axle bearings associatedtherewith, and an axle disposed in said bearings, of a tubular uard of sheet material surrounding said axle etween said bearings, and means cooperating with said bearings for restraining said guard from turning.
2; In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a frame having side axle bearings associated therewith, and an axle disposed in' said bearings, of a guard of sheet material entirely inclosing said axle between said bearings and restrained from turning by said bearings.
. 3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a frame having side axle bearings associated therewith, and an axle disposed in said bearings, of a tubular guard of sheet material enveloping said axle between said bearings and having its respective ends in cooperative engagement with said bearings and restrained from turning relative thereto. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a frame having alined split axle seats, bearing members within .said seats, and an axle disposed in said bearing members, of a tubular dust guard surrounding said axle and having its respective ends projecting slightly into the ends of said axle seats, and means associated with said guard and cooperating with said axlejseats for preventing turnlng movements thereof.
6. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of bearings and an axle disposed within said'bearings, of a split tubular member surrounding said axle and extending between adjacent .bearings, and means overlapping the abutting edges of the said split member.
7. Ina dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a frame having side-axle bearings, and an axle disposed within said bearings, of a split tubular guard surrounding said axle between said bearings, side strips overlapping the edges of said guard and secured to one portion thereof, and means associated with said side strips forrestraining the turning of said guard.
8. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a frame having side axle bearings, and an axle disposed within: said bearings, of a split tubular. guard surrounding said axle between said bearings, and side strips overlapping the edges of said guard and secured to one portion thereof.
