JOHN BRUDA, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed November 25, 1918. Serial No! 264,010.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRUDA, a subject of the King of Austria-Hungary, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention aims to provide a harness that may be advantageously used by fire and police departments or as a matter of fact, any place where horses are to be quickly hitched to a vehicle, the harness including a construction and arrangement of parts that permits of a portion of the harness being normally connected to -a vehicle and in such position that horses may readily assume a position that permits of the harness being placed on the horses, and further attached to the vehicle, this being accomplished very quickly and without any danger of the various straps becoming entangled or retarding a quick get-a-way particularly with apparatus of a fire department.
My invention includes certain improvements in bridle construction and the arrangement of backing straps, particularly for a team, and these improvements will be hereinafter described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein there is shown a perspective View of the harness as designed for a team of horses, showing one of the horses as hitched to the tongue of a vehicle.
For either a single or double set of harness the bridles are identical and each comprises a crown piece 1 having a brow band 2 and a nose piece 3. At the juncture of the crown piece and the nose piece 3 are adjustable straps 4 supporting bit rings 5 and a bit 6. The top of the crown piece 1 has a throat latch 7 preferably in the form of a chain provided with a snap hook 8, so that the bridle may be fitted on horses of different sizes.
The harness for each horse of a team comprises a breast piece 9, a neck band 10, breeching. 11 and traces 12 connecting a whiffle tree 13 to the breast piece 9, and breech or backing straps 14 connecting the breeching by pole straps 15 to a pole or tongue 16.
The neck strap 10 has a pad 17 and terrets nected in the usual manner or rings 18 for reins 19, said reins being conto the bit rings 5 of the bridles. The neck straps 10 are also connected by straps 20 to the breeching 11, and said breeching is reinforced by angularly disposed straps 21. Similar straps 22 connect the neck strap 10 to the breast piece 9 and the straps 21 and 22 correctly define the position of these harness parts so that the harness will be maintained in condition to be easily placed on the horse.
The traces 12 are normally connected to the whillle tree 13 and the harness is adapted to be supported or suspended so that a horse can assume a position under the same and permit of the harness being lowered into position. The bridle can also be suspended in position to be quickly ap lied to a horses head or it may be detachalily connected to the neck strap 10 so as to be handy when a horse is to be hitched up.
The breech or back stra s 14 extend through guides 23 carried y the breast piece 9 and in consequence of this arrangement the backing straps are at the sides of a horse and do not pass between the fore legs of the horse, thus preventing any swaying movement of the pole or tongue throwing the animal.
In hitching a team. to the vehicle pole or tongue 16 it is only necessary to connect the backing straps 14 to the pole or tongue and the traces to the whifile tree, and with the bridles and other parts of the harness in position it is possible to accomplish the hitching and unhitching of the team in short order.
What I claim is A harness comprising breeches, backing straps connected thereto and adapted to extend along the sides of a horse and be connected to a tongue, a breast piece supporting said backing straps adjacent the outer end of said tongue, traces connected to said breast piece and extending under said backing straps and adapted to be connected to a Wlllflltl tree, and a neck band connected to said breast piece and to said breeches.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BRUDA.
