Beit known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county Of Lake, State of Illinois, have invented certain 'new and use-V full Improvements ,in Controlling Devices for PFilled'-Bag-Sewing Apparatns, of vwhich the following is a description, reference being had Ito the accompanying 'drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
,The invention relates to new and useful improvements` in a controlling device Jfor a lled bag sewing apparatus and more particularly to a lilled bag sewing apparatus including two sewing machines ea'ch avin'g a sewing head and a "conveyor belt for presenting the filled bad to its sewin'ghead.
In my prior finest, No. 1,237,710, named August 21st, 1917 ,I have shown 'a lledba'g Sewing apparatus including two 'sewing machihes positioned relative 'to each other so that th'elled bag after being stitched on one of the sewing machines may be conveyed tO and stitched on the other sewing machine. In conjunction with 'the apparatus shown in said 'patent` Ithere are` controlling devices whereby ycertain control may be hadI over the sewing heads and the 'conveyers o'f the respective sewing machines.

In the present `embodiment of my invention, I have brought togethertwo complete filled bag Sewing machines and 'associated the same so that the iilled bags after having been stitched on one machine ymay be conveyed by the conveyor belt thereof to 'the conveyer belt 'of the other machine and then stitched thereon.
It is customary in the packing of certain materials to use an inner and an outer bag. The vapparatus referred to is especially designed for stitching first the inner ,bag on one sewing machine and then 'the outer bag on the other sewing machine. Each filled bag sewing machine includes `clutches which may be Operated 'so that the 'conveyor oi the machine may be operated independently of` the stitching mechanism or the stitching mechanism and conveyer may be simultaneously started and operated. My particular improvement consists in the controlling devices for these clutches. There are controlling devic'es for each sewing station, that is, adjacent each sewing head, so that the operator standing at the sewing head of one filled ba@ sewin 'machine may vactuate the controllmg devices of vvsuch machine or when standing at or iadjacent the sewing head of the other machine may actuate the controlling devices therefor. These controllingdevices are so constructed and connected that the conveyor belts may be simultaneously controlled from either sewing station and the conveyor belt Iandv sewing head of either machine may be operated independently. y
Referring more in detail to the drawings, my improved filled bag sewing apparatus includes a vfilled bag sewing machine indicated at and a lfilled bagf sewing machine indicated at B. These sewing machines, 'so far as the sewing heads and conveyor belts are concerned, are duplicates of each other` and, therefore, the description of one will answer for the other, the referenceletters, however, being applied to the' drawings to indicate both machines. p
Each filled bag sewing machine includes a frame 1 having a table Q carrying a bracket 3. Mounted yfor vertical adjustment on the bracket `3 is a sewing head 4c` which is pro- VKeyed to this shaft v8 is a clutch member 9. Associated with the clutch member 9 isaVY clutch member 10. In line with fthe shaft 8 is a driving shaft 1l. Keyed to the shaft 11 is a clutch member'12 which is adapted to coperate with a clutch member 13 on a belt wheel 14C, freely mounted on the Shaft 11 and capable of'endwise movement thereon. This belt wheel is preferably driven from a motor indicated at M and supported by the main frame 1. Carried bythe main frame 1 and projecting laterally therefrom is a supporting bracket for the conveyer belt. Mounted on this bracket are two rollers 15 and 16. `The conveyer belt, indicated at 17 in the drawings, runs over these rollers. One of the rollers, preferably the roller 15 is driven by a sprocket chain 18l from the sprocket wheel 19 on a cross shaft carrying a worm gear which meshes with a worm gear slidably connected to the shaft 11. The bracket for the conveyer belt is mounted on twov threaded shafts 20 and 21 and may be raised and lowered by the turning of these shafts. This manner of supporting the conveyer'belt and driving the same so it` may be adjusted vertically without disturbing its driving connection with the vertical shaft` 11 is substantially the same as that shown in the Foster Patent 875,339,7grantedDec. 31, 1907. The belt wheel 14; as above noted is driven from a'motor and this beltl wheel is capable of being moved endwise so as to couple the same to the clutch member 12 which will rotate the shaft 11 and thus operate the conveyer. A further endwise movement of the belt wheel raises the clutch member 12 which is keyed to the shaft 11 so as to bring the same into engagement with the clutch member 10 and raise said clutch member into gripping engagement with the clutch member 9 and this causes the shaft 8 to be driven from the belt wheel 14; and the shaft 8, as above noted, operates the sewing head.` The belt wheel is shifted on the shaft 11 by a'lever 22 which is pivoted at'23 to a bracket 24'attached to the underside of the supporting table 2.
The controlling devices for the two filled bag sewing machines indicated at A and B are identical and each includes a knee shift lever and also a foot controlled lever.
A shaft 23 is mounted in suitable brackets in the frame 1 of each sewing machine. This shaft 23 has a knee shift lever 25 IiXedly attached thereto. Also fixed to the shaft 23 is Van arm 25. This arm 25 is connected to the lever 22 by a rod 26. .The rod 26 extends freely through an opening 27 in the arm 25 and the lower end thereof is benty as at 28. Also mounted on the shaft 23 and fixed thereto is an arm 29. The arm 29 on the sewing machine indicated at Aris connected to the arm 29 on the machine indicated at B, by a link 30, so that any movement i1nparted to the-shaft'23 bythe knee shift lever YAYof one filled bag sewing machine will be .likewiseimparted to the shaft 23 of the other filled bag sewing machine.
Also mounted on the shaft 23 so as to turn freely thereon is a foot lever 31. This foot lever has an arm 32 formed integral-there4` with and the shaft 23 merely serves. as. a
bearing support for this foot lever. A rod. 33 is connectedV at vitsupper end to the arm.
22l and at its lower end said rod extends freely through an opening 34.` in the outer end of the arm 32 and said rod is bent` laterally as at 35. Inasmuch as each foot lever 31 is free on the shaft 23 it will be apparent i that either lever may be depressed without depressing the other foot lever and the rod 26 may slide freely through the arm l25to which it is attached sothat when either foot lever isdepressed the other Afoot lever and the clutch parts controlled thereby will not be in any way moved.
As above noted my improved filled bag sewing apparatus is especially adaptedfor sewing an inner and also an outer bag. The lled bags are placed on the conveyerof the filled bag sewing machine A. -The operator through the lever 31 may depress the lever 22 of said sewing machine A, sufficiently to start the conveyer of this machine only, and thus cause the lled bag to be moved along until it reaches the sewing head. By further depressing the foot lever the lever 22 may be depressed further at its outerend thus causing the clutch members 9-and 10 to contact and the sewing mechanism to be operated. Thus the mouth Vaf the inner sack may be closed. The operator may then, through the action of the knee shift, cause bothY conveyers to be operated `and without operating either stitching mechathe'other andv brought to the second sewing head, that is, the sewing headof the filled Y bag sewing machine B. The operator then` stepping to the other station may, bydepressing the foot lever thereof, control either the conveyer alone of this second filled bag sewing machine or control the conveyer v and the sewing mechanism 0f such machine and thus close or stitch the mouth of the outer bag.

It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may-be made without departing 'from the spirit oi the invention as 'set vforth in the appended claims. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is 4 1. The combination 'of filled bagclosing machines each including a sewing head and a conveyer for the filled bags, said conveyers being positioned so that the filled bag is de'- livered from one conveyer to the other, and devices for controlling the operation of both conveyers from the sewing position at either machine.'

The combination of filled bag closing machines each including a driving means, a sewing head, a clutch between the sewing head and the driving means, a conveyer, a clutch between the conveyer and the driving means, a lever for operating said clutches in succession whereby the conveyer may be operated independently or with the sewing head, said conveyers being positioned so that the filled bag is delivered from one conveyer to the other, a shaft supported by each machine, a knee shift for moving the shaft, an arm carried by the shaft, a rod connecting the arm to the lever for operating the clutches and a link for connecting the shafts whereby the oscillation of one shaft is imparted to the other so that the conveyers may be operated from either sewing position.
