CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
rmnn-sacx-snwmomacnmn To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, Invmc F. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Filled-Sack- I Sewing Machines,of which the following is a specification, reference being'had therein to the accompanyin drawings.
This invention re ates to improvements in filled sack sewing apparatus including a sack conveyor and a sewing mechanism, and
has for an object to rovide actuatingmeans for the sewing mec anism controlled independently of the actuating means for the sack-conveyer. c
The invention has for a further object to provide a separate control for each of said actuating mechanisms.
Another objectof this invention is to provide actuating mechanism for the sack conveyer permitting the required adjust? ments of the conve er. a 1
Other objects o this invention will be apparent from the following description and claims. r y
In its preferred embodiment, the present improvement comprises a filled sack sewin apparatus havin asuitable frame-wor supporting a vertically adjustable sack-conveyor and an overhanging sewing head. The actuating mechanism for the sack-oonveyer consists of an electric motor, supported by a bracket secured to the conveyer-frame and having driving connections with the loose pulley of a power transmitter. This power transmitter is controlled by a treadle in a manner permitting vertical adjustment of the transmitter without afiecting the position of the treadle. The sewing machine is driven from a motor secured to the frame work "of the apparatus through the intermediary tof a power transmitter also secured to the frame-work and adapted to be controlled by a treadle independent of the tread is controlling the o ration of the conveyor.
Theinvention wil beunderstood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in
' i which Figure 1 is a Wow in elevation of the j. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 27, 1921 Application filed January 24, 1913. Serial No. 213,509.
tion as viewed from the ri ht in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view 0 the conveyeractuating power-transmitter. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the right-hand conveyerframe supporting-bracket as viewed from Fig. 1. P ig. 6 is a sectional view of the left hand conveyer-frame supporting-bracket as viewed from Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line AA of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the conveyer-actuating-motor su porting-bracket.
eferring to the drawings, the filled sack sewing apparatus comprises a base 1 from which rise the upwardly projecting standards 2 and 3, supporting the table 4. Se-
cured to the table 4 is a bracket 5 carrying the overhanging sewing machine 6 of well known construction. The driving pulley '7 of the sewing machine is driven by a belt 8 passing over the adjustable idler-pulleys 921ml 10 mounted on the supporting post 11 secured to a base 12 suitably positioned upon the table 4. Beyond the idler pulleys, the belt 8 passes through suitable apertures in the table 4 and around the driving pulley 14 of a power transmitter 15 of a well-known type and supported by a bracket 16, secured to the underside of the table 4. The loose pulley 17 of the power transmitter is adapted, to be clutched to orunclutched from the driving pulley by means of the usual start ingand brake-lever 18, connected by means of the relatively adjustable rods 19 and 20 wit-h a lateral arm 21 secured to a rock-shaft 22. The rock-shaft'22 is supported in bear ings 23 and 24, secured to the base 1 of the apparatus and is acted upon by a. spring 25' to normally hold in a substantially vertical position the treadle 26 secured upon the rock shaft 22 by means of the collar 27. The loose pulley 17 of the power transmitter 15 is constantly driven by means of a belt 28 from the electric motor 29 supported by the base 1.
Positioned below the sewing machine 6 is the conveyer comprising an endless carrier-belt 30 passing around the driving pulley 31 and guiding pulley 32. These pulleys of the conveyer-frame 33 for a purpose hereinafter described. The bracket 35 is formed with elongated slots, as 39, entered by pins, as 40, screw-threaded into the conveyerframe 33 resting upon the bracket. Each of the brackets issecured by bolts, as l1, to nuts, as 42, to permit sliding movement upon the standards 2 and 3. Threaded into the nuts 42 are vertical screw-rods, as 43, supported in bearings, as 44, and carrying bevel-gears, 45, in mesh with similar gears, as i6, upon horizontal shafts, as 4-7, journaled in bearings, as a8, on the under side of the table 4- and carrying crank-handles, as 49. By simultaneously manipulating the handles 49, it is evident that any desired vertical adjustment of the conveyer may be obtained. hen one of the crankhandles is manipulated slightly faster than the other, the conveyer-frame 33 swings on the pivot-pin 37, which is permitted by the provision of the slots 39 in the bracket 35.
The driving pulley 31 for the carrier-belt is mounted on the shaft 50, coupled by means of the ribbed-washer, 51 with the power transmitting shaft 52 rotatively supported upon a bracket 53secured by bolts, as 541-, to the conveyer-frame 33.. The-power transmitter, as usual, includes a continuously driven loose pulley 55 and a-driving pulley 56 adapted to be forcedinto driving engagement with the pulley 55 by means of a startingandbrake-lever 57. The pulley 56 is keyed to the driving member 58 of a planetary gearingand carrying a pair of double spur-gears 59 and 60 mounted to rotate upon their own axes. The gears 59 mesh with the stationary spur-gear'6l carried by the shaft 62, upon which the loose pulley 55 is mounted to rotate and which shaft is rigidly bolted to the bracketextenison 63 of the bracket 53. The spur-gears 60 have a smaller number of teeth than the spur-gears 59 and mesh with the spur-gear 64 keyed to the shaft 52. By means of this construction, the desired driving ratio of the pulley 56 relatively to the shaft 52 may be obtained.
The loose pulley 55 is constantly rotated by a belt 65 driven by an electric motor 66 supported by a bracket 67 secured by bolts,
as 68, to the conveyer-frame- 33. -Consequently the actuating means for the carrier belt 30 maintains a definite relative position with regard to the conveyer-frame 33 in spite of any adjustments of the conveyerframe. V
To the startingand brake-lever 57 is-secured one end of a spring 69 of which the other end is secured to a post 70 projecting from the bracket-extension 63, this spring acting toholdthe lever 57 in contact with the vertical rod 71 secured by rods 72 to the vertical fulcrum-rod 73, supported at its upper end in a bearing 74 secured to the under side of the table 4;, and at its lower end in a bearing 75 on the base 1. The rod 7]. is connected by means of a longitudinally adjustable link 75' with a crank-arm 76 secured to a treadle actuated rock-shaft 77 mounted in bearings 78 and 79 on the base 1. A foot-plate or treadle 8O secured to the rock-shaft and is normally held in raised position by a spring 81, the action of the spring being limited by a stop-pin 82 so cured to the shaft and adapted to bear upon the base 1. By pressing downward upon the treadle 80, the consequent actuation of the rock-shaft causes the rod 71 to swing about its fulcrum and thereby act upon the lever 57 to force the driving pulley 56 into frictional contact with the constantly rotated pulley 55. The treadle connections described are entirely independent of the mechanism for actuating the sewing machine and permit vertical adjustment of the conveyorframe 33 and its actuating mechanism.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what Iclaim herein is 1. In a filled-sack sewing apparatus. the combination with a supporting frmne-work, sewing mechanism supported by said framework, a motor carried by the latter and a trcadle for controlling power transmission between said sewing mechanism and motor, of a sack conVeyerframe, means permitting vertical adjustments of said sack conveying frame, sack-conveying means supported by said frame, and means for actuating said sack-conveyor means including a motor and a power transmitting clutch carried by said frame.
