Description

A. Mom. RUCTION OF LIGHT WEIGHT ENGINES.
APPLICATKON men APR. 9,1917.

ALBERT MOBIN, OF ASNEBES, FRANCE.
QONSTRUCTION OF LIGHT-WEIGHT ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,
Application filed April 9, 1917. Serial N40. 160,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Monm, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 81 Rue du Mnil, Asnieres, Seine, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Light-Weight En ines, of which the following is a specification.
The ObJect of this invention is improvements in the construction of light weight engines, and such improvements consist essentially in making the cylinder of steel, the water jacket of aluminium and the combustion chamber of cast iron, these three pieces being assembled so as to obtain perfectly tight joints throughout and also to avoid any contact between the combustible gas and the aluminium water jacket. By the use of this method, engines of very light weight can be obtained, without being subj ect to the drawbacks due to the low strength of the aluminium and to the fact that it is easily attacked by the combustion gases.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical section exemplifying a constructional form of an engine cylinder according to the present invention. It will be observed that i the cylinder a which is of steel is provided with a flange 12 upon which is placed the aluminium water jacket 0 surrounding the cylinder. This cylinder 0 is threaded at the upper part and is screwed into the cast iron cylinder head d, and this assures at the same time a perfect contact between the bottom surface of the cylinder head with the top surface of the water jacket, and of the bottom surface of the water jacket with the cylinder flange b.
A still greater, tightness can be obtained by slightly heating the cylinder a before assembling and by dipping the screw thread part 6 in -sal ,ammoniac. When assembled, the screw threads undergo a chemical attack which produces a hermetically tight joint between the cylinder and the head and a close adhesion, and on the other hand the contraction of the cylinder in cooling acts to press the Water jacket tightly between the flange andthe cylinder head.
It is evident that the present invention is not strictly limited to the above described disposition, and the various parts which make up the present device can be modified as to shape, relative size and details sembling.
Having now described my inventioi I claim as new and desire to secure 1 ters Patent is:
1 In an internal combustion engl: combination of a head piece, com] a combustion chamber and the usl sociatcd parts, for each cylinder, a threaded portion at the lower part said head piece for each combustion her, a cylinder provided with a screw and adapted to be screwed to eacl screw threaded portion, a projecting, 1' of the head piece coming on the cuts each cylinder when in position, 0. adapted to surround each cylinder i certain amount of clearance. and he part at one end adapted to contact wi projecting portion of the head pier a step upon each of the cylinders 2K to come into contact with and gri other end of the jacket When the cylii in position, all substantially as dcscri 2. A cylinder for light weight e1 comprising in combination, a steel jacket, a flange cast with the jacket an rounding the same, an aluminium jacket surrounding said inner jacke maintained upon said flange, and 2 iron cylinder head secured upon the 1 the steel inner jacket and pressingupi aluminium water jacket; substantial described and for the purpose set fort 3. A cylinder for light weight e1 having in combination, afsteel inner provided at the top with an exterior thread, a flange cast with the jacket an rounding the same, an aluminium jacket surrounding said inner jackei maintained upon said flange, and a cas cylinder head screwed upon the top steel inner jacket and pressing upoi aluminium water jacket; substantial described and for the purpose set foi In testimony whereof I have signs name to this specification in the pre of two subscribing witnesses.
