Be it known `that I, CHARLES H. FREEMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Bloomington, .in the county of 'McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andv useful Improvements. in Eccentric-` Driven Bumps, of which, the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to eccentric driven pumps, and has for its object the production of an air pump, the pistons of which are driven by an eccentric secured upon a trans` verse shaft, the construction of the eccentric, the terminations of the pitmen, and the flanged cover plates are believed to be especially novel, and the combination of parts as a whole results in a particularly simple and effective air pump.
Of the accompanying` drawings, wherein the construction of each part and its arrangement with respect to the others is fully illustrated, Figure l represents a side view of all parts assembled, showing the alined cylinders in section, and the pistons also in section longitudinally and vertically. In this ligure the pitmen are also in line with each other upon the opposite sides of the eccentric. In this figure the flanged cover or retaining plate on the side of the eccentric presented toward the observer has been removed to disclose interior parts. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the eccentric turned upwardly and the pitmen inclined to each other. The near cover or retaining plate is partly broken away in this view. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the eccentric and the pitmen with one of the cover plates removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken upon the broken lines lf-4 of F ig. 3.
Throughout the drawings and description, the same letter is employed to refer to the same part.
Considering the drawings, the cylinders A and a, have the pistons B and b. The cylinders have their axes alined, and the shaft C passes transversely between them. The pistons are pivotally f connected with the pitmen D and d.
Secured upon the shaft C is an eccentric E, which is provided with a central portion or hub e that projects on both sides of the eccentric.
As best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the pitmen have curved, sliding terminations F and f, that fit the eccentric peripherally and slide thereon. The curved terminations of the Spe'cifcaton'of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 26, 1919,

The two cover plates are alike. When the two cover plates are arranged and secured upon the sides of the eccentric as illustrated, their flanges cover the edges of the curved terminations of the pitmen and hold them in place movably upon the periphery of the eccentric.
In the operation of this invention, if it be assumed that the shaft and eccentric turn clockwise, starting from the positions of the parts set out in Fig. 1, the piston B will be withdrawn and the piston I) moved inwardly with regard to their respective cylinders. The curved terminations of the pitmen slide upon the periphery of the eccentric, and the pitmen are inclined first upwardly and then downwardly, as will be lreadily understolod.
Considering Figs. 1 and 3, it will be noted that the rim recesses H, h, and le, c, afford access into Tgthe spaces upon the inside of the flanges of the cover plates and between the ends of the curved terminations of the pitmen when the pitmen are alined as set out in those figures. In practice if those spaces or chambers so formed are filled with suitable grease, the operation of the pump will spread the same continuously over the meeting surfaces 0f the eccentric, of the curved terminations of the pitmen, and the inner surfaces of the annular fianges of the cover plates, thereby constantly lubricating the mechanism.
