To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB F. DELONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamberton, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Grader, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a grader intended for use in road making.
The main object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the cutting and scraping elements to various ang es.
Another object of the invention is the provision of adjustable means for cutting a ditch or slant at each side of a road.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for vertically adjusting the supporting frame of a grader.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of graders.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a grader constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, parts being removed;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in side elevation of the wheel supporting one end of the scraper bar and its connection to the bar;
Fig. 4 is a detail view in side elevation of the side supporting wheel.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference In carrying out the invention there s provided an irregular frame 1 WhlCll 1s mainly supported on a bull wheel 2. The frame is mounted for vertical adjustment on the bull wheel 2 in any of the well known ways of so mounting a frame, the particular means herein shown consisting in a bracket arm or bracket arms 3 which are secured to and rise from the frame 1, and to which are fulcrumed, between their ends, the levers 4 which extend longitudinally, and are arranged horizontally on each side of the wheel 2. The rear ends of the levers 4: have linked connections with guide plates 5 which are rigid on each end of the shaft 6 on which the wheel 2 rotates. Grooved guide pieces 7 are secured to the frame 1 and receive the plates 5 with a sliding fit. The forward ends of the levers l have connection through links 8 with one arm of a hand lever 9, which is fulcrumed to the frame 1 as at 10, and which may be locked in any selected position by means of the usual dog engaging the segmental rack 11, which rackis secured to the frame 1.
At one side of the machine a wheel 12 is rotatable on the pin of a crank lever 13 which is fulcrumed to a suitable support connected to the frame 1 and the other arm 14: of which forms a hand lever which is operable to shift the wheel with respect to the frame and so raise or lower the end of the frame, as may be desired. A segmental rack 15 is secured to the frame 1 and is provided for the purpose of retainin the lever in any selected position.
secured to the rear of the frame 1, and extending transversely of the machine, is a scraper bar 16 one end of which is mounted on a roller 17 which is j ournaled in the lower bifurcated end of a spindle 18. The spindle 18 is rotatable in the hub formed on a bracket 19 which is secured to the end of the scraper bar 16. A lever 20 is fulcrumed on the bracket 19 and engages between collars 21 of the spindle for the purpose of raising or lowering the roller with respect to the scraper. The usual segmental rack is provided for the purpose of retaining the lever in any selected position.
The other end of the scraper bar has secured thereto and rising therefrom a spindle 22 which rocks in a bearing 23 suitably secured to the frame 1. A lever 24 is fulcrumed on the frame 1 and engages the spindle 22 for the purpose of shifting the end of the scraper bar 16 with respect to the frame and so adjusting the depth to which the bar will cut or scrape.
Suitable means are provided for swinging the scraper bar 16 about its pivoting spindle 22 which means, as herein shown, consists of an eyebolt 25 which is secured to the scraper bar near that end remote from the pivoted end, and to this'eyebolt is secured the rear end of an adjustable draw bar.
The draw bar comprises a rod 26 formed At that side of the frame 1 at which the scraper bar is pivotally connected, guide plates 29 are secured and within these plates a block 30 is slidable vertically, being slid up and down by means of'a lever 31 which is pivotally secured to this side of the frame. A horizontally disposed shaft 32 is pivotally connectedto the block 30 to swing'horizontallytherefrom, and on this shaft are bars of the frame l. The disks 33 are provided for the purpose of cutting thesurface at the side of the road to provide the slope to the ditch.
Aseat 37 is secured to the rear portion of the frame 1 for the accommodation of the operator-of the g'rader.- To the forward portion of the frame a tongue 38 is detachably secured by ,means' of a bolt 39, and may be" removed or detached when it is desired to transport thegrader'by meansof a tractor.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be evident from the foregoing de-- scription without a special and detailed explanation thereof.
. Having thus described the invention,what
is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is: I I 1. In a grader, a frame, a wheel for supporting the central portion of the frame,
grooved guide pieces on the frame, guide plates vertically adjustable in said grooved guide pieces, a shaft, carried by said guide plates for supporting the wheel, levers-for adjusting said guide plates vertically, means for holding the guide plates in their positions of adjustment, and road grading means carried by the frame.
2. In afgradena frame, means for supporting the frame, rotatable disks carried by the frame, a scraper bar having one of'its ends pivotally connected to the frame at the rear thereof, a draw bar having one of its ends connected to the free end of the scraper bar, a flexible member connected to one end of the draw bar, a clamping member carried by the frame, and adapted toreceive the flexible member whereby the scraper bar is held at various angles with relationto the frame, and means for adjusting the frame vertically.
