Description
G. S. COLEMAN.
Improvement in Fire-Kindlers.
`N0. 131,428 Patente'dSep. 17, 1872.
UNITED STATESV PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. COLEMAN, OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,428, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. COLEMAN, of Alexandria, county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Non-Explosive Fire-Kindlerg7 and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the composition of the ingredients-viz., clay, ashes, salt, and plaster Paris, made of any form-oval, round, or oblong-baked hard, having a cavity in the center containing a sheet-metal cylinder filled with oil or fluid, with a split Wire extending from the handle through the center, the kindler being sufficiently porous to absorb the fluid to fill the cavity and be completely saturated.
The object of my invention is in producing a cheap and safe kindler, to ignite a Wood or coal fire instantly and without failure, by saturating the kindler with alcohol, oil, or fluid, that can be lighted with a match and placed under a grate or Wood prepared for ring, proving a most useful invention in housekeeping, or for lighting furnaces or engines.
A represents the fire lighter or kindler, made of Wet clay, ashes, salt, and plaster Paris, of an oval, round, or square shape. It is baked or burned hard so as to be lire-proof, not easily broken, and used as a kindler a number of times. It has a cavity, B, in the center, forming an oval or oblong aperture or reservoir, which holds oil or alcohol. C isa Wire handle, split at one end, and shaped to correspond with the cavity B, the points at D being compressed closely, but not tightly,
together, leaving sufficient vent for the gas of the fluid, to escape and burn in a iiame. E is a small sheet-metal cylinder that is lled with the fluid, when the open end is compressed closely together sufficiently tight to prevent the iuid from running out. This cylinder E rests in the cavity B. The kindler A is kept in a cup lled with alcohol or oil of any kind, and it absorbs the fluid, even to filling the cavity B 5 and when required for kindling a fire it is lifted out of the' oil and a match or lighted candle is applied to the kindler and instantly it is enveloped with a strong and active flame, which will give' out its flame and heat for some minutes, so as to ignite Wood or even a bituminous-coal fire; and after it has completely ignited the iire it can be Withdrawn by the handle, and the kindler is perfectly free of sparks or re. It can then be replaced in the oil-cup, always ready for use. When the kindler is lighted or in use it is non-explosive, as the gas escaping slowly through its pores burns on the outside and cannot explode.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A kindler provided With the cavity B, split Wire C C surrounding the cavity, and the metallic cylinder E in the cavity, constructed, combined, and operated as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
G. S. COLEMAN.
