Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed July 5, 1918. Serial No. 243,412.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD I-I. SPANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leechb'urg, in the county of Armstrong and State ofPennsylvania have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its objcctto provide an improved and simplified cutting machine, whereby large sheets of sheet metal or other material may be, expeditiously cut into strips of any desired length and Width.
l/Vith this and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in theaccompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departingfrom thespirit or sacrificingany of the advantages of the invention.

A drive shaft 17 is journaled in bearings provided in the legs 11 and 12 and is connected with a crankshaft 19 by a train of gears 20. The crank shaft l9.is also journaled in the legs 11 and 12 and is provided with two or any other desired number of crank pins or arms 21 having connection with rods 22 attached to a reciprocable shaft 23. The shaft is designed for reciprocation in an inclined plane in guide slots 24 provided in the supporting legs 11 and 12 and is connected by the rods 25 with the outer terminals ofrelatively movable cutting knives 26, as indicated at 27. The rods 25 are mounted for adjustment longitudinally of the shaft 23, and the blades are pivotally supported at their outer ends for adjustment toward'and away from each other by a shaft 28 extending between'the legs 11 and 12 and arranged directly above one of the side members 13. Connecting the blades- 26 is a rod 26 adapted to prevent a lateral As will be readily understood, the rod 26, which may be detachably secured to the blades 26 j in any suitable or preferred manner, is removed during adjustment of the blades toward or away from each other, this rod being replaced after the desired adjustment has been effected and secured in position in any Well known manner.
The relatively movable blades 26 are arranged for movement through the slots between the slats 15 andcooper'ate with relatively stationary blades 28 supported atone end on a shaft 29 extending between the supporting legs and connectedat their opposite terminals with inclined braces 30 connected with a supporting rod 31 extending between the legs. While blades 28 are stationary relative to blades 26, it will be understood, of course, that they are ad ustable toward and away from-each other upon the rod 31 and shaft 29 so as to accommodate adjustment of the upper blades. The blades 26 and 28* are, of course, secured in proper adjustment upon their supporting shafts or rods by means of set screws, as
illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, or by any other suitable equivalent means.

In a machine of the character described, a supporting frame, feeding and cutting mechanisms carried by said frame for feeding a sheet of material to be operated upon longitudinally thereof and for cutting this sheet into parallel strips extending longitudinally of the sheet, a receiving table composed of a plurality of spaced slats supported by the frame and positioned to receive the strips of material fed over the same from said feeding and cutting mechanisms, said slats being disposed transversely of the frame, spaced cutting blades rigidly supported in substantial horizontal position beneath the slats of the table, said blades being mounted for adjustment toward and away from each other so as to have the distance between the blades varied and so as to be brought into alinement with any of the spaces between said slats selectively, the slats being adjustable toward and away from each other so as to permit accurate adjustment between the slats and blades, a supporting shaft carried by the frame above said slats and extending longitudinally thereof, blades rockably mounted on said shaft adjacent their outer ends so as to be adjustable longitudinally thereof toward and away from each other, said. .rockable blades cooperating with the blades beneath the slats of the table to provide cutting shears for cutting the strips of material passed across said table into lengths, and means for operating said rockable blades simultaneously with the operation of the said feeding and cutting mechanisms.
