To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENNETT J. CLIQN- DENEN, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Miami, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Hammer, of which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject matter of this application is a hammer, and the inven tion aims to provide novel means for bracing the head of the hammer from the handle, the construction being such, at the same time, that one end of the head may be inserted beneath a board or like object, for the purpose of prizing the same upwardly It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.

With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a hammer constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away, and parts appearing in section; and Fig. 2 is a section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The hammer forming the subject matter of this application includes a head 1 provided intermediate its ends with an eye 2 wherein one end of a handle 3 is inserted, the saidA end of the handle being held in the eye by means of a wedge 4 or otherwise. One extremity of the head 1 terminates in a free-ended lifting prong 5 curved to project in the general direction of the other end of the handle 3. A curved brace 6 procopies jects from the prong 5 in spaced relation to the free end of the prong, the brace terminating in an eye 7 embracing the handle 3 closely, intermediate the ends of the handle. The handle 3 may be supplied at its extremity with a tack puller 8, and the head 1 may carry a small side claw 9, the prong 5 being bifurcated as shown at 10, so that the prong may be used for drawing nails.

bviously the brace 6 and the eye 7 reinforce the hammer to a marked extent. There is a specific advantage in causing the brace 6 to project from the prong 5 intermediate the ends of the prong, instead of merely extending the prong in such a part as the eye 7. Since the prong 5 is freeended, the prong may be inserted beneath a board or like object which is to be prized up, and the brace 6 at the same time, affords the necessary strength. In this connection, it is to be observed that the brace G projects from the head 1 in spaced relation to the eye 2, thereby rendering the brace peculiarly efficient in reinforcing the prong.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A hammer comprising a head provided intermediate its end with an eye, and a handle having one end mounted in the eye, one extremity of the head terminating in a freeended lifting prong curved to project in the general direction of the other end of the handle and having a nail-receiving notch, there being a curved brace projecting from the prong between the eye and the base of the notch and independent of the notch, the brace terminating in a ring inclosing the intermediate portion of the handle and independent of the prong.
