STAPLEIQSETTING IMPLEMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KERSTETER, acitizen of the United States, residingat State College, in the county of Center, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Setting Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper-tain's to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in devices for driving staples, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that a number ofstaples can be held in position to be successively driven.
A- further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one provided for holding a plurality of staples which are fed one at a time to aposition tobe driven by the driving rod.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig.3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar View on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 6 is an end view.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the handle, said handle having a longitudinal bore 3 formed therein, and in which is slidably mounted a spring pressed drive rod 4, the lower end of which being provided with a curved recess 5 for engaging the bight of a staple. The lower end of the handle 1 is provided with .a cut away portion 6, the purpose of which will appear later.
Removably engaged with the lower end of the handle 1 is a plate 7, said plate having its lower end formed with a horizontal flange 8 which supports the outer edge of the staple supporting bar 9. The inner edge of the bar 9 is spaced from the adjacent walls of the handle 1 so as to permit the passage of the staples as they slide from the bar, whereby the staples will be successively positioned under the drive rod 4.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application filed April 21, 1916. Seria1No. 92,744.
Hingedly associated with the handle 1 a spring pressed guard 10, which is substantially semi-circular Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
in cross section so as to receive the upper edge of the bar 9, said guard serving to hold the staples against accidental disengagement from the bar 9. The outer end of the guard 10 is provided with a yoke 11, the legs of which straddle the bar 9 so as to preve n oil the outerend of the bar.
The handle 1 has associated with its lower end a claw bar 12 which is for the purpose of pulling nails or staples.
The handle 1, bar 9 and guard 10 are preferably formed from aluminum, while the drive rod is formed from steel.
In use, a plurality of staples are engaged with the bar 9, and the guard 10 under the action of its spring 13 will The handle 1 is held in a horizontal position at one end so that the bar 9 will be directed prevent the dis .engagement of the staples from the bar.
t the staple sliding upwardly thus causing the staples to gravitate successively into the path of movement of the drive rod 4 which being struck a sharp blow will drive the staple into the post. 4
The device is particularly adapted for use in stapling fence wires to the supporting posts, butit will be of course understood that it can ,be used in any other connection seen fit. y i
What is claimed is I A device of the class described comprising a handle having alongitudinal bore formed therein, a spring retractable drive rod slidable in the bore, a staple supporting bar having its inner end disposed adjacent the inner end ofsaid bore and so arranged that the staples will be successively fed into the path of movement of the drive rod, a spring pressed guard carried by the handle for inf closing one edge of the staple supporting bar, and a yoke carried by the outer end of the guard and arranged to straddle the supporting bar to retain the staplesthereon, as
and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. KERSTETER.
