Description

A. R. SPIELBERGER.
FOUNTAIN COMB.
APPLICMION mw SEPI. l2. 1918.
1.314.158. PatemedAug. 26,1919.
l n l u UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
ABE B. SPIELBERGEB, F ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
FOUNTAIN-COBB.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ABE R. SPIELBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, 'have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Fountain-Combs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combs and it relates more particularly to fountain combs.
The main object of this invention is to generally improve upon the fountain comb described and claimed in my former patent, No. 1,256,386, issued February 12, 1918.
The advantages obtained by this present invention may be best emphasized by a statement of the disadvantages experienced in connection with the device which is the subject matter of the patent above referred to, some of the disadvantages being as follows:
The ball 25 was found to be too expensive, especially if made hollow, and it was too heavy when made solid. Moreover, this ball did not satisfactorily operate E to collapse the tube 7 but would sometimes puncture or tear the tube and thus cause considerable waste and annoyance. It was also foundj difficult to connect the two threaded connections of the handle with the back 5, because each of these threaded connections interfered With the other. Moreover, it was found expensive and impracticable to form the racks 19 within the slots of the handle member, and the pinions of the gears 23 added to the eXpense.
The foregoing disadvantages and diliculties are overcome by the simplified and practical construction which is disclosed in Athe accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fountain comb;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view;
Fig. .3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view along the line of 55 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my special dispensing tube detached.
Referring to these drawings, in detail, in
rwhich similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the Speoication o! Letters Patent.
` Patentednug. 26, 1919.
Application led September 12, 1918. Serial No. 253,717.
vseveral views, this device consists of a commay be quickly and easily removed and replaced without the use of tools.
The comb member 7 is providedwith a passage 12 which has outlets 13, and an inlet 14. This member 7 is formed with a hollow shank 15, the hollow of this shank comprising a frusto-conical cavity 16 and a cylindrical internally threaded cavity 17, the latter being in open communication with the inlet 14 and the frusto-conical cavity 16. The purpose of the shape of the cavities 16 and 17 as specifically described in the foregoing, s to snugly and securely engage with the dispensing end portion b of a collapsible tube a of special construction, that is, the improved collapsible tube (see Fig. 6) of soft metal which is employed as a receiving and dispensing receptacle for ointments, pomades and the like. From an observation of I'gs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that the tapering and screw-threaded end portion b lits snugly in the recesses 16 and 17 so that the member 7 is substantially integral therewith. Moreover, the shank 15 is formed with a shouldered seat 18 which is smooth and unbroken with the exception of apertures 19 which are screw-threaded to receive the screws 11. These screws extend through apertures of the hollow handle 8, and secure it to the seat 18. However, when it is desired to remove the handle 8, the screws 11 are removed, and the handle may then be removed by arelative longitudinal movement of the members 7 and 8. The'handle 8 is preferably formed with perforations 20, and these perforations lighten the handle and also provide an anti-slipping engagement of the handle with the hand of the user. Moreover, the handle 8 is formed with opposite slots 21 which extend longitudinally from one end portion to the other, but terminate short Vof the extremities of the handle.
The rotary member 9 is provided with a slot 22 which receives the flattened or collapsed end of the tube a, and a manipulative element 23 is provided on one end of the member 9, so that the collapsed end of the tube may be wound upon this member by rotating the same. The end portions of the understood that the rotary member 9 moves` laterally of its axis and longitudinallyof the slots 21 in consequence of the shortenlng of the tube during the winding and collapsing thereof. Obviously, as the tube is collapsed or. flattened, it is proportlonately broadened, and in order to provide for'thls increase in breadth of the tube without adding unnecessary material and weight to the handle, the latter is preferably formed with fan elliptical or oblong cross section, as indicated in Fig. 5. This not only obtains the desiredl result mentioned, but insures accuracy and ease in adjusting the handle to the member 5 in such relation that the apertures which receive the screws 11 are accurately alined without special effort by the user.
' The rear end of the handle 8V is preferably open so as to allow the user to quickly and easily engage the collapsed end of the tube with the slot 22.
Although I have described this embodiment of my invention very specifically, it is not intended to limit this invention to these exact details of construction and arrangement of parts, but I am entitled to make changes without departing from theinventive idea disclosed in the foregoing description and the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a fountain comb, the combination of a collapsibledispfensing tube having a long frusto-conical neck and an externally threaded end element on said neck, a combing and dispensing member provided with a passage having an .inlet and outlets, said member.
being formed with a long frusto-conical cavity and with a threaded seat in open communication with said cavity and inlet, whereby said combing and dispensing member is adapted to snugly and securely engage with the frusto-conical and threaded end portions of said collapsible dispensing tube.
2. In a fountain comb, the` combination of a collapsible dispensing tube having a long frusto-conical neck and an externally threaded end element on said neck, a combing and dispensing -member provided with a passage having an inlet and outlets, said member being formed with a long frusto-conical cavity, and with a threaded seat in open communication with said cavity and inlet, said combing and dispensing member being adapted -to snugly and securely engage with the frusto- Lerares ed end element on said neck, a combing/and dispensing member provided with a passage having an inlet and outlets, ysaid member being formed with a long frusto-conical cavityv and threaded seat to receive the frustoconical and threaded portions ofsaid collapsible dispensing tube, said shank being formed with a seat that is non-cylindrical in cross section and has threaded cavities therein, a hollow handle adapted to receivethe v body of thev dispensing tube and having one end fitted around said seat, screws engaged with said handle and with said threaded cavities to removably secure saidl hollow handle on said seat, and means carried by said yhandle for forcing A the contents of the tub i nto said dispenslng member.
4. In a fountain comb, the combination `of a collapsible dispensing tube, a combingand dispensing member having a cavity to receive the dispensing end ofthe collapsible tube, a hollow handle secured thereto and having opposite slots extending therealong Vmember engageable with vthe i the dispensing tube and operand a rotary other end o able to wind -the` bo y of the tube thereon and thereby collapse the tube, said rotary.r
member having its end portions extending..
through said opposite slots and adapted to be drawn therealong by the tube when the latter is being thus wound. p
5. -In a' fountain comb, the combination o a collapsible dispensing tube, a combing and ioo dispensing member having a cavity to receive the dispensing end of the collapsible tube, a hollow handle secured thereto and havingopposite slots extending therealong, a rotary member engageable with the other end of the dispensing tube andv operable to wind the body of the tube thereon and thereby `collapsethe tube, said` rotary member v having its: end-portions extending through said opposite slots and adapted to be drawnl therealong-by 'the tube when the latter'is bei t lng thus wound, and means embracing the exterior surface ofthe handle and being ef' fective-to hold the axis of said 'rotary'memf i 12e ber perpendicular to theglength of the'handlewhile it travels along the handle.
In testimony whereof I- have lhereunto set my hand.
