UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMON'D F. 1R. DU MAZUEL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
FOLIATING SHELL.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND GUY FERDI- NAND ROBILLARD DU MAZUEL, doctor of science and consulting engineer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foliating Shells for Illuminating, Incendiary, or other Work of a Naval, Army, or other Nature, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a shell or projectile carrier the walls of which are segmental, such as is shown and described in my coi-pending application, filed January 5th, 1918, under United States Patent Office Serial Number 211,308, and amended J anuary 28th, 191s.
Myy shell is so constructed that once fired from a gun or other propelling device, at any desired point along its trajectory, it will open out and thus allow its contents, whether an illuminating lamp, incendiary or gas receptacle, or other contents to be set free.
The nature of my invention will be better understood by referring to the drawings.
Figure 1 is a cross-section CD of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section AB of Fig. 1.
Upon a base 17 and aro-und a floor plate 10 are set up segments 3, which are held in place by said base 17 and also by screw cap 2 and plunger plate 5 at the top, and by one or more inner circular rings 12 connected to one another and to plunger plate 5 and base 17 by posts 11; the whole thus forming an ordinary shell to which any standard time fuse 1 can be screwed down, the usual copper band 14 having been inserted and base 17 made fast by shearing pins 16.
Inside of this shell two chambers are thus formed: chamber 4, or exploding chamber, wherein is held a proper charge of explosive; and chamber 15, or vehicle chamber, which may be divided up, and which is to contain chemicals, gas or was compounds, incendiary compounds, signaling compounds, illuminating lamp or lamps and parachutes, or other materials or devices.
The shell having been properly assembled and loaded the gunner or operator sets the fuse to proper timing and fires the same.
After leaving the gun, or other propelling device, the shell follows the course of its trajectory and at a time set, the explosive Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application iiled April 2, 19-18. Serial No. 226,155.
within the exploding chamber 4 being ignited, explodes, thereby forcing downward plunger plate 5 which in its turn forces plunger rod 9 through floor plate 10 and at the same time from shoulder 7 in space 8 pushes downward posts 11 thus disengaging rings 6 and 12 from anchorage 13 of segments 3 and forcing out base 17 after shearing shearing pins 16 and then, separating screw cap 2 from segments 3, forces said segments 3 outward, cotton-bell fashion, shearing through copper band 14; and thus, releases ybolide or contents of chamber or chambers 15. v
The petitioner well knows that many different devices and shells have been made and patented, but it is a well known and positive fact that up to the present time, in the art of shell manufacture, no one has designed a shell, incendiary, gas, illuminating, vehicle carrying, or for other similar purposes whereby the shell being made of separate segments as heretofore described, will open up and thereby liberate its contents 'at a pre-desired point along its trajectory without crushing, destroying, or otherwise injuring such contents. Furthermore it is well known by the petitioner that no design of shell heretofore manufactured will permit of the minute inspection of integral parts, the examination of eutectic, the simplicity of manufacture or the elimination of defective portions with the minimum of losses: all of which can be done with the Du Mazuel shells. l
Although I have shown one style of simple Du Mazuel shell in the designs and specifications, yet I wish it understood that I do not restrict myself to any one style or design. l,
Having described my invention in annexed specification, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A shell comprising segmental walls, inner rings engaging the segmental walls, posts engaged by said inner rings, a base interlocked vwith said segmental walls and an interlocking ogive or cap.
2. A shell comprising segmental walls that inclose one or more chambers, inner rings engagingthe segmental walls, posts engaged by said inner rings, a base interlocked with said segmental walls and an interlocked ogive or cap.
