Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ang. en, 3.919.
Application filed July 12, 1918. Serial No. 244,598.
T all 'Lr/tom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, Percival. FAULii-Nnr. KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident o-t' the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Cauada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in umbrellas, and the object of my invention is to devise an umbrella capable of being disassembled by the user as t0 all its parts so that it may be readily folded up into small bulk and as readily assembled again, thereby providing an umbrella. which is of great convenience and utility. A further object is to provide an umbrella from the construction of which wiring is entirely eliminated.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the umbrella pole and one rib.
Fig. 2 is a detail View of the rib upper end connecting sleeve.
Fig. 3 is a. cross sectional view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view` of the sliding sleeve.
Fig. 5 is a face View of the rib tip member.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the folding of the ribs.
Fig. S is a reduced plan view of the inside of the cover.
Fig. 9 is a sectional view of Fig. 8 from the center lto circumference showing tip 9.9 attached and in section.
Similar figures of reference ii dicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates generally the pole of the umbrella which is jointed as at 2 so that on breaking the joint the upiper and lower ends 3 and t may be laid alongside one another.' Secured to the upper end 3 of the pole is a. sleeve 5 Vhaving on its upper end an integral flange 6, which flange is curved to correspond to the curvature of the cover 7 when the umbrellaI is opened and the cover is provided at its center with a flange 8 also similarly curved the bore of which is such as to allow it to pass freely over the end of the pole to be seated on the 'flange 6 as shown in 1 and 3, being held firmly thereon when 'the 'umbrella is assembled by means el? a flange it() tern-leden the lower :and ot a sleeve 11 also freely mounted on the pole and capable of being partially rotated so that the bayonet slot 12 with which it is provided will coact with a pin 13 secured into the pole and by means of which slot 12 and pin 13 the flange 10 is locked in place to grip firmly between it and the flange (l the cover flange 8.
14 indicates a sleeve adapted to be slidably mounted on the `outside of sleeve 5, the lower end of which is provided with a rotatable portion 15 internally threaded toengage when rotated and being assembled a correspondingly threaded portion of the sleeve and thereby hohl the sleeve 1t in its upmost position7 as shown, abutting the underside of the flange (l, while the upper end of sleeve 111 is enlarged and slotted, as shown at 33 in Figs. 1 and 2, there being as many slots, spaced equidistant from each other, as there are ribs in the complete umbrella. Thel enlarged slotted end of the sleeve tits when in place into a groove 41 formed in the underside of flange G so that it is -prevented from spreading under pressure.
Slidably mounted on the pole 1 is a. sleeve 16 having its end portions 17 and 18 rotatable and each provided with an internal projection 19 and Q0 respectively, these projections being adapted to engagethreads 2.1 and 22 formed on the pole so that when the projection 19 is brought into contact with thread 21, or projection into contact with thread 9,2 and the respective portions 17 or 18 are rotated, as the ease may be, these portions will be advanced along their respective threads and the projections 19 and 20 will be carried respectively upwardly and downwardly until they slip into pockets 23 and 9.4 formed in the respective threads 21 and 22, when the sleeve will be temporarily locked in 'its upmost or downmost position, as the case may be, unlocking being effected by raising the projections ont of their respective pockets and rotating the portions 17 and 1S in the opposite direction. The non-rotatable portion of the sleeve is bulged outwardly and slotted, as shown at 3,4 in Figs. 1 and Lt, there being as many slots as there are ribs in the umbrella.
The ribs of the umbrella. one of which is indicated by the numeral Q5, are each formed in two sections and jointed at 26. the joint being covered by a slidable sleeve *2,7 which `intevents the ribs from inadvertent folding' folding at the joint but which when slid away from the `joint allows theilewer section of the rib to be folded toward the upper section, as indicated by the dotted lines y in Fig. 7. The lower end of each rib is flattened, indicated at 28,111 Fig. 7 and mounted on the flattened end is a tip niem.
ber 29 the opening of which is correspondingly i'iattened so that when in place 1t will not turn from its proper position. These vtips on their outer sides are plate-like in Venlarzg'einents 32 adapted to lit-between the sleeve 5 and the .sleevey la and by meansv of which theupper endsl of the ribs are retained in' place after being inserted into Ythe p slots 33 of the sleeve l-l.
The spreading` of the ribs isV effected in fthe usual manner by means of spokes, Vone of which is indicated by the numeral 86 in 'l Fig,V l, their upper endsbeing'hingedlylconnected to the ribs as at 37 while thenl lower ,ends are provided with transverse members Yo r enlargen'ients 3S similar to'those on the upper ends ofthe ribs adapted tol pass through the slots gli in the sleeve 16V toengage the inner side ofthe same.
The cover 7j of the umbrellaV is provided on its inside with a pluralityv of spaced loops V39. formed `preferably by securing a tapel l0 to the cover, the loops .being formedby stitching Vthe tape to the cover at the' required intervals, there beingasinany loops asA there are ribs.`
rlavingthus indicated the principal parts of my inventionll. will nowdescribev the `manner in whichitis assembled and dis- .;f-inbled. "i
verse ends 32 of the ribsare seated iii-the are seated in the sleeve 16, the cover 7 being secured to the pole l andthe ribs by the sleeve ll, tapeloops -f-O and tip members 29. To now disassemble the umbrella so that Vit 'maybe folded all that is'necessary is to unscrew the sleeve l5 to withdrawl the upper end of the sleeverlfl' away vfrom the undersideY of plate` 6,' unlock the sleeve ll and withdraw it over the point'off the umbrella, and slide the sleeves 27 to uncover the joints 26 ofthe ribs. Y The upper ends of the ribs may` now be raisedk out of sleeve Ala and the lower half of Veach rib folder upwardly onto its upper half, the act of the ribs affording' suiiicient 'slackness of the cover to enable the tips 29 to be withdrawn from the ribs and to alle-iv the delige 8 of the cover to be passedover the SGDSG.
therefrom, said W li enthe umbrella is assembled thetrans.-
Laisse@ Ahave devised a useful umbrella which can be reiuniv disassembled to permit its beingV folded into small bulkand which is Acharacterized by the entire absence of wiring` in its construction. As changes could be made, however, in the construction described, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in ing specification and drawings beV interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingI l/Vha-t I claim as my invention is: l.y In an umbrella, a pole, a flange secured thereto having' anexternally threaded eXten- "sion, anda sleevev adapted to detachably receive the umbrella ribs mounted on said eX- thereto, having an annular groove in its underside and a sleeve mounted on said pole capable of being advanced or retracted so that its upper end may engage in said groove to prevent its spreading' or be disengaged sleeve 'being adapted lto detachably receive lthe Vupper ends of the' umbrella ribs.
