Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. Bn'r'rs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Frogs', of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway frogs, which has for its special object the employment of a pivoted frog point which is controlled in its movement by a guard lever, or tongue, which is operated by the movement of the rolling stock.
Another special object is the provision of means which are actuated by the flanges of the wheels to line up the frog before the wheels reach the frog point.
Another special feature of my improvement is to so construct the guard lever, or tongue, that it may also act as a rerailing device, should the wheels run ofi' of the track in crossing the frog.

Referring to the drawings, 14 indicates the body portion of my improved frog, which is cast integral. The said body portion is provided throughout its length with a series of perforated plates, or ears, 15 for thereCeptiOn of spikes to hold the same in position. Near one end of the body portion, the same is provided with flanged portion 16, provided with spike openings also adapted to receive spikes for holding the frog in place. The frog, as previously stated, is cast in one piece and is in effect hollow on its underneath portion 17 to receive the operating levers.
Cast integral with one end of the frog are rail sections 18, to which rails may be secured by fish plates in the ordinary manner.
The opposite end of the frog is provided with an extension 19 and a plate 20.
21 indicate rail sections which are bolted to the extension 19 by means of bolts 22. The extension 19 forms a continuation of the elevated portion 23 of the frog.
Formed integral with the frog on each side of the portion 23 are guards 24. These guards are spaced apart sufficiently to pei'- niit the passage of the wheel flanges between them and the portion 23.
Formed through the frog and beneath the portion 23 and the guards 21 are openings, or pockets 25, in which is located a pair of beveled projections 26, which project upwardly into the wheel Harige openings 27, one being located in each wheel flange passage so as to be operated upon by the flanges of the wheels. rlhese projections are mounted on a curved bar 28 which is carried by a lever 29.
The lever 29 is pivotally mounted on a stud 80 formed integral with the frog, having one of its arms carrying, as stated, the bar 28, and its other arm pivotally mounted on a stud 31 carried by the pivoted frog point 82.
One end of the pivoted frog point 32 is pivotally secured adjacent to the portion 23 by means of an integral stud 33. Formed in the frog is an opening 34, in which the stud 31 is adapted to travel.
Pivotally mounted at one end of the frog is a guard lever, or tongue 34, one end of which is provided with a pin, or lug, 85, adapted to be inserted into a suitable opening in the frog and held in position by a cotter pin 36. The opposite end of the guard lever, or tongue, 81 is provided with a pin 37 which passes throughthe frog and on which pin 37 one arm of a lever 38 is mounted.
From the foregoing description, the operating of lever 29 operates the frog point 32, and when the lever 29 and the frog point 3-2 are moved, the lever 38 is moved, and, consequently, the guard lever, or tongue As previously pointed out, these levers and their connections are housed in the Vbody of the frog, as illustrated in Figs. 3l and 4.
Formed integral with the frog on each side of the pivoted guard lever, or tongue, 34 are guards 39 which terminate on their inner ends with curved recesses or abutments 40 in which the point of the frog point is adapted to be seated. Y
The frog point `is provided with recesses or cutaway portions 41 for the purpose of preventing dirt or foreign substances from becoming' lodged in the recesses or abutments 40.
The pivoted guard lever or tongue 34 is provided withV a groove 42 in which the flange of the wheel may ride in the operation of rerailing a car moving in the direction of the frog point, in which case it is only necessary to shift the Wheel over by means of blocks or any suitable device until the flange comes Vin line with the groove. This guard lever or tongue, by being so constructed, may also be used as a replacer, if the wheel should becomedisplaced, that is, a replacer for the wheels moving in the direction of the frog point.
As previously pointed out, the projections 26y are mounted in the path of travel of the car wheel flanges and are operated by the travel of the anges over the same and will cause a* movement of the frog point 32 through the lever 29 before the wheels reachV the frog point. In other words, before the load can reach the pivoted frog point, the frog will be lined up, or the frog point 32 be operated upon to locate the same in its proper position.
The frog point is automatically operated by the operation of the projections 26, and when the frog point is operated in one direction by the system of levers previously described, the pivoted guard lever, or tongue is operated in the opposite direction; and also the operation' of the pivoted tongue, or guard lever, in one direction will operate the frog point automatically in the opposite direction. A movement of the rolling stock in one direction past the pivoted guard lever, or tongue, automatically controls the operation of the frog point, whereas the movement of the rolling stock in the oppositev direction past the projections 26 will operate the frog point in one direction and the pivoted guard lever in the opposite direction.
The frog point 32 is provided with a guard 43 which covers the elongated slot in which the pin, or stud, 31 travels.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A railway frog comprising a pivoted frog point and a pivoted guard lever, a connection between said frog point and lever whereby the operation of one in a given direction will cause the other to be operated in the opposite direction, and a projection located in the path of travel of the wheel flange and adapted to be actuated by the Wheel flange for operating the frog point, and, consequently, the guard lever. l
2. A railway frog cast integral and proy vided on one end with guards and connections for rails, and on the other end with rail sections and tread sections forming a continuation of the rail sections, a pivoted frog point, a pivoted guard lever and a prol jection mounted in advance of the pivoted frogand in the path of travel of the wheel flanges, and a connection between said projection, pivoted frog and guard lever whereby the operation of eitherwould automatically operate the other two.
`3. A railway frog cast in a single piece and being formed hollow on its underneath surface, guards cast integral with the frog at one end, an extension for rail connections formed integral with one end of the frog, rail sections and treads formed integral with the other end of the frog, a frog point pivoted between the guards, a guard lever pivoted between the treads, a projection located in the path of travel of the wheel flanges and adapted to be operated upon by the wheel ianges, and a connection located in the hollow portion of the frog for connecting the pivoted frog point, guard lever and projections whereby upon the operation of one, the others will be operated. 4. A railway frog cast integral and provided on one end with integral guards hav-Y ing pockets, an intermediate tread portion between the guards and spaced apart from the guards so as to provide wheel flange passageways, a fro point pivoted between the guards, projections located in the passageways and adapted to be acted upon by the wheel flanges, and a connection between said projections and pivoted frog point.
5. A railway frog cast integral and provided on one end with integral rail sections and tread sections forming a continuation,
of the rail sections, the said tread sections being provided at one end with curved frog point seats, a pivoted frog point, a combined guard lever and replacer pivotally secured between the treads, and a lever connection between the pivoted frog point and guard lever and replacer whereby the operation of the guard lever will automatically cause the pivoted frog point to move in the opposite direction.
6. A railway frog cast integral and provided on one end with integral guards and an intermediate tread section spaced apart from the frogs se as to provide wheel flange passageways, an extension cast integral with the intermediate tread section to which rails may be secured, rail sections and tread portions formed integral with theopposite end of said frog, a pivoted guard lever mounted between said tread sections, a pivoted frog point mounted between the guard lever and first mentioned tread section, dogs, or projections, mounted adjacent the first mentioned tread section and beneath the guards and in the wheel flange passagcways, and a lever connection between said projections, or dogs, the pivoted frog point and guard lever whereby the Operation of one by the passage of the wheel flanges will cause the others to be automatically operated.
7. A railway frog comprising a base plate, guards carried by one end of the plate, a tread portion between said guards and spaced apart therefrom forming flange passage-ways, a pivoted frog point carried by the base plate having one end pivoted adjacent said tread ortion and between the guards, rail extensions carried by the opposite end of the base plate, rail sections carried by said end of the base plate, a pivoted guard lever mounted between the rail extensions, a lever pivoted to said guard lever, frog point and base plate. a seond lever pivoted to said first mentioned lever, and projections carried by the last mentioned lever projecting into the flange passage-ways for operating the frog point by the passage of' the wheel flanges.
8. A railway frog comprising a base plate, guards formed with pockets carried thereby, a tread portion between the guards and spaced apart therefrom and forming passage-ways for the wheel flanges, a pivoted frog point, a lever mounted underneath the Copies of this patent may be obtained for base plate and having one end pivoted to the frog point, dogs or projections carried by the opposite end of said lever and projecting into the ange passage-ways.
9. A railway frog comprising a base plate, guards formed with pockets carried thereby, a tread portion between the guards and spaced apart therefrom and forming passage-ways for the wheel flanges, rail sections secured to said tread portion, a lever mounted underneath the base plate and having one end pivoted to the frog point, dogs or projections carried by the opposite end of said lever and projecting into the flange passage-ways.

A railway frog comprising a base plate, a pivoted frog point carried thereby, wheel fiange passage-ways adjacent the pivoted end of the frog point, a lever pivoted to said frog point, and projections carried by said lever and located in the passageways in advance of the pivoted end of the frog point, whereby the wheel flanges will operate the frog point before the wheels reach the frog point.
l1. A railway frog comprising a base plate, a pivoted frog point carried thereby, wheel flange passage-ways adjacent the pivoted end of the frog point, a lever pivoted to said frog point, projections carried by said lever and located in the passage-ways in advance of the pivoted end of the frog point, whereby the wheel flanges will operate the frog point before the wheels reach the frog point, rail extensions carried by the base plate on the end opposite the flange passage-ways, and a pivoted guard lever provided with a groove throughout its length mounted on the base plate between said rail extensions.
