  • My invention relates to improvements in devices or frogs for derailing railway cars, and it is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the device or frog disclosed in my Letters Patent No. 479,338, which device or frog is adapted to prevent cars, when left on a siding, from running out onto or into the main track which so frequently occurs in case of storms or other moving power, by derailing the car or cars before they cross the switch which leads into the main track or come in such close proximity to the rails of the main track as to cause a collision or serious damage by a passing train.

Be it known that I, OWEN, J. TRAVIS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, 1n the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices or Frogs for Derailing Railway-Oars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices or frogs for derailing railway cars, and it is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the device or frog disclosed in my Letters Patent No. 479,338, which device or frog is adapted to prevent cars, when left on a siding, from running out onto or into the main track which so frequently occurs in case of storms or other moving power, by derailing the car or cars before they cross the switch which leads into the main track or come in such close proximity to the rails of the main track as to cause a collision or serious damage by a passing train.
One of the objects of my present invention is to provide a derailing frog so formed or constructed that it is adapted to engage and raise the wheels of a car'so as to/ disengage the flange of the same from the inner side of the head or ball of the rail, and is also adapted to cause the wheels to move toward the outside of the track as soon as they get uponthe frog and thereby facilitate the derailment of the car. Another object of the present invention is to provide a pivoted derailing frog or device arranged adjacent to a siding rail and connected with a switch or switch operating mechanism in such a manner that when the switch is open, the frog or device will rest in a position away from the siding rail, and when the switch is closed, the frog or device will rest over the siding rail and in a position to derail-a car should the same move toward the switch and main track.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a main track and siding with my improvements in position. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view illustrating my improved frog or device in its operative position above a rail. Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe same; and Fig. 4 is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 00,00, of Fig. 2.
In the said drawings, similar letters of reference designate corresponding partsin allof the several views, referring to which A, indicates the main track rails.
B, B, indicate the inner and outer turnout or siding rails.
0, indicates switch rails or points which are shown as connected at their heels to one of the main track rails A, and the inner turnout rail B; and D, indicates my improved derailing frog or device which is'preferably arranged on the outer side of the outer turnout rail B, at a suitable distance from the main track rails as illustrated.
The'sta'nd E, of my improved frog or device preferably comprises a base plate a, of steel or wrought iron which is arranged upon a sleeper or tie and extends beneath the rail B, an upper plate I), of steel or wrought iron which is bolted to the web of the rail, and an iron filling block 0, which is secured between the plates a, and b, and is adapted to hold them apart so as to enable the frog or device which is connected with said plates by a fu-lcrum bolt d, to swing freely between the same. The said derailing frog or device D, is fulcrumed at an intermediate-point of its length on the bolt d; and itis bent upwardly as indicated by e, and is increased in width as illustrated so as to form the derailing portion F, which is designed, when in its operative position, to rest over the rail B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This portion F, of the frog is provided upon its upper side with a flange or rib G, which is so disposed that it will extend across the rail in an oblique direction when the frog is in its operative position, and said portion F, also has its upper side slightly beveled from the base of the flange G, downwardly and outwardly as indicated by f, for a pur-' rests above the rail 13', while the shoulder 9, formed by the bend e, bears against the outer side of the head of the rail as shown in Fig. 3, so as to prevent movement of the frog or device when said frog or device is struck by the wheels of a car or cars. Now it will be seen that when a car wheel traveling in the direction indicated by arrow (see Fig. 2) takes upon the portion F, of the frog or device, it will be raised so as to disengage its flange from the inner side of the head or ball of the rail, and its flange being engaged by the flange G, of the frog, it will be moved laterally outward so that when it runs off the frog, it will not be in a position to take upon or engage the rail. This outward movement of the car wheels or wheel is facilitated by the beveled upper side of the portion F, of the frog, and as is obvious, it will result in a certain derailment of the car which is the end sought to be attained.
The movements of my improved derailing frog or device may be effected in any suitable manner and by any suitable means, but I prefer in practice to so connect it with the switch rails or points 0, as shown in Fig. 1, by the rod 00, bell crank lever y, and rod 2 or other suitable means that when the switch is open it will rest away from the rail B, so as to permit free movement of cars upon the siding or turnout, and when the switch is closed, it will rest over the rail B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, ready to derail any cars that may move toward the switch and main track.
My improved derailing frog is also designed for use on main track rails at railroad crossings to take the place of switch points for derailing purposes, in combination with inter locking machines.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my improved derailing frog or device is very cheap and simple and it will be seen that when properly placed with respect to a rail, it will serve effectually to derail a car or number of cars. It will also be seen that by reason of the connection between the frog or derailing device and the switch points shown in Fig. 1, it is impossible for atrainman or switchman to leave the frog, or device in a wrong position inasmuch as it will move in concert with the switch points and will rest over the rail when the switch is closed and will rest away from the rail when the switch is open.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination of a railway rail, a tie or sleeper, a stand comprising a base plate connected to the tie or sleeper and arranged beneath the rail, an upper plate connected to the rail, and a filling block secured between the base and upper plates, and a derailing frog or device fulcrumed between the plates of the stand and having a shoulder adapted to bear against one side of the rail and also having a portion adapted to rest over the rail and provided with an oblique flange or rib, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
