Description

V. MILES.
WATER ELEVATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4.1919.
.Patented Aug. 19, 1919. ,I
VESTER MILES, OF PAGELAND, SOUTH CAROLINA WATER-ELEVATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application filed .Tune 4, 1919. Serial No. 301,668.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VESTER MILES, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Pageland, in the county of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Elevating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the s ame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water elevating devices and consists in the provision of a water actuated piston for returning the same to its starting position after being elevated by a crank and chain mechanism.
The invention consists of a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which I have shown a central sectional view through the apparatus, parts being in elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:
1 designates a tank which may be supported in any suitable manner, and is provided with an outer wall 1 spaced apart from the tank and serves as a means to protect the water from freezing, and said tank is provided with a priming opening 1X through which water is introduced to start the device. 2 designates a pipe which is adapted to extend into a well or other source of supply of water which is to be elevated, and which leads to and communicates with the top of thetank. A spring pressed valve 3 is mounted in the inlet end of the pipe entering the tank and serves to prevent water passing back through the pipe after having been elevated. A piston 4, suitably packed, is
mounted within said tank and is provided with a spring pressed valve 5 regulatincr the openinff therein, and 6 is a stem to said-J piston which passes through a suitably packed gland 7 and has a weight 8 secured to its lower end. A pin 9 secured to the bar 6 has journaled thereon a pulley 10.
A rope l1 has one end secured to the bottom of the tank and passes underneath said pulley and over a pulley 12 and is adapted to wind about a drum 13, to the spindle of which a crank arm 14 is fastened. A pipe 25 leads from the bottom of the tank and is connected to a spigot 26 affording means whereby water may be drawn from the tank.
In operation, when it is desired to fill the tank, the operator by turning vthe crank may raise the piston and when the handle is released the weight is adapted to counterbalance not only the weight of the piston, but the pressure of water against the same, and by alternately raising the piston and allowing the same to lower by gravity, the tank may be filled and affording a source of supp ly which may be piped to any suitable location.
What I claim to Ibe new is:
1. A water elevating device, consisting of a cylindrical tank, and a valved pipe adapted to extend into a well and communicating with the upper portion of the tank, a valved piston within the latter, a stem fixed to said piston and movable through a suitably packed gland in the bottom of the tank, a weight secured to said stem outside the tank, and means for raising the piston and weight.
2. A water elevating device, consisting of a cylindrical tank, and a valved pipeadapted to extend into a well and communicating with the up er portion of the tank, a valved piston within the latter, a stem fixed to said piston and movable through a suitably packed gland in the bottom of the tank, a weight secured to said stem outside the tank, a chain fastened at one end, pulley upon the piston stem under which said chain passes, and a pulley fastened to the tank over which the chain passes, and a drum about which the chain is adapted to wind.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
VESTER MILES.
