To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WJWALLERY, of Mystic Bridge, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Boat-Lowering Apparatus, of which the following is a speciication:
The invention relates to the construction of the davits and their relations to the other parts, whereby the bases or points of support change outward and inward, with a motion analogous to rolling, as the boat is moved outward and inward; also, in connection therewith, to certain braces andmodes of connecting the same to the davits; also, to certain means of securing the parts in Xed positions, and to the caging or confining of the bases of the davits.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification, and represents what I consider one of the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of a portion of a vessel with a boat mounted. The dotted lines show the boat inboard and resting on checks. The strong lines show it ready to be lowered. Fig. 2 is a plan view in the latter position.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures.
A is the deck of a ship, and D is one of the davits. There are two of these davits, one to support each end of the boat. E is the tackle by which the boat is hoisted to and lowered from the davit when the latter is in its most inclined or outboard position. The foot of the davit is bent as represented, and adapted to roll or to change its bearing in a manner analogous to the motion of a rocking-chair.4 M is a trough-like foot piece, having a smooth inner surface, in which the foot of the davit may roll backward and forward as the davit is drawn inboard, and allowed toincline outboard. There are transverse pins d1 d2 d3 fixed in the davit, as represented, and recesses are provided in the raised sides of the casting M which receive these pins. The recesses which receive the pins d1 d3 are open notches; the recesses which receive the pin d2 are covered recesses or properly-formed holes, one in each raised side of the foot piece M. As the davit is rocked to and fro on the foot piece the pins di cl2 d3 rise and sink in their respective recesses 5 but the pin cl2 is never allowed to entirely escape. It
is always locked or confined in the holes represented in the foot piece. The davit is guided fore and" aft by divergent braces N1N2`attached to a substantial slide, N, which is adapted to allow the davit to slide up and down through it. The feet of the braces N1 N 2 are hinged to eye-bolts or knuckle-joints near the deck, as Lindicated by O1 02. The braces N1 N2, with the slide N, may turn forward and backward, turning on the knuckle-joints O1 O2 to accommodate the motion as the davit is moved outboard and inboard, sliding up and down through the-ring or slide N. There are two chocks, F F', to each davit. The inboard chock F is Xed, the outboard chock Fis hinged, to allow it to be folded down out of the way when the boat is to be moved into or out of its position on the chocks. The tackle I may be used to haul the davit with the attached boat forcibly inboard and to lower it again into the inclined position outboard. P is a stout pin or stop fixed in the davit, and which bears against the under face of the slide N when the davit is in its eXtreme outboard position. It arrests the davit and holds it iirmly with the weight of the boat depending thereon. When the boat is lowered and disconnected a removable pin or key, p, is inserted to prevent the davit from moving voluntarily inboard, as it might sometimes be inclined to do when the weight of the boat is off and the ship is rolling heavily. When the davit is in its extreme inboard position the upper face of the slide N rests against a fixed pin or stop, Q, which prevents the davit from moving inboard any further. Aremovable key, q, may be inserted under the slide when in this position to hold the davit firmly inboard. The tackle I may be detached after the boat is properly stowed upon the chocks. In this condition the apparatus occupies very little room beyond that ofthe boat itself.
I propose to employ substantially the same construction of apparatus, a little diiferently proportioned, to serve in case there is a rail over which the boat must be lifted. In such case the checks F F may be higher, so as to hold the boat always at a sufficient height to be ready to move outward over from the rail; and to facilitate this operation the chocks may be mounted on transverse rails or supports, which may be slotted so as to perform the double functions of supports and of guides for the davits. A In such case there may be pins or analogous locking means to hold the davit in its inboard and outboard position.
It will be understood that any ordinary or suitable construction of boat and detaching means may be employed, and also that other than the tackle I may be used to move the davit with the boat attached. The boat-fall may belay to a cleat on the side of the davit, as shown, or may be otherwise secured, as preferred. The slide N may be made in the form of a simple ring and attached to the braces N1 Y `N2 by welding, or it vmay be made in other forms and attached either rigidly or by some suitable turning joints or trunnions. It is important to have a large amount of strength in these parts. The pins d1 d3 maybe permanently fixed in the davit D, but the pin d2 should beremovableto allow the davit to be unshipped when required.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patenty l. The davit D, formed and mounted as shown, so as to change its base or bearing at the foot by a motion analogous to rocking, for the purposes herein specified.
2. The slide N and braces N1 N2, hinged at the points Ol O2, in combination with the davit D, formed as shown,.and adapted to beinclined outboard and inboard, with a changing base or rolling support, as herein specified.
3. The stops P Q on the davit D, in combination with the keys p lo, the slide N, and the stout supporting and guiding means N1 N2, to arrest the motion of the davit at the proper limits and hold them firmly, as specified.
4. The rocking-davitD, mounted in atroughlike foot piece, M, and confined by one or more transverse pins matching in holes in the sides of the foot piece, as herein specified.
