RICHARD C. KOCH, OF .PITTSTON, AND THOMAS B. MOLAUGHLIN, OF SOUTH EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKINGS FOR PISTON-RODS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,355, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, RICHARD O. KOGH, of Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, and THOMAS E. MCLAUGH- LIN, of South Easton, in the county of N orthampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a central lengthwise section of a cylinder-head, stuffing-box, gland, and packing-rin g constructed after or upon the principle of our invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of a packing-ring such as we use preferably, the ring or rings being laid down flatwise. Fig. 3 is a side view or elevation of the ring or rings shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of the rings shown in Fig. 3, developed on a flat surface.
This invention is intended for use in the stuffing boxes of the cylinders and steamchests of steam-engines, in the stuffing-boxes of pumps, and generally for packing any rod or shaft used for analogous purposes.
We shall describe it as applied tothe packin g of a piston-rod of a steam-engine.
The letter a indicates a cylinder-head fastened to the cylinder by any of the common methods. The letter a indicates a common form of stuffing-box, and a the common stuffin gbox flange. The letter 12 indicates the gland we use, cylindrical in form throughout its length, and having the flange b which may be secured to the flange a by screws b or the like. The joint between the gland and the stuffing-box-say, from m to w--shou1d be steam-tight. On the end of the gland screws the gland-cap 12 The diameter of the gland from the point so to the end of the gland-cap is somewhat smaller than the diameter of the hole through the stuffing-box, so as to admit steam, at its full pressure, up to the point :20. Through the gland and gland-cap runs and reciprocates the piston-rod 0. An annular slot, b, is turned out on the inside of the gland, in
which lies the packing-ring or rings, as there may be one or more of these rings. We have shown in the drawing, and prefer, two of these rings. The construction of these rin gs is shown fully in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The rings are composed of sections 8 s s loosely toothed together, somewhat after the fashion and principle that packing-rings for a piston-head are sometimes laid together. We prefer two of these rings, as shown, so that the joints of the sections of one ring maybe lapped and covered by the sections of the other ring. These rings and sections are so fitted to the circumference of the rod or shaft 0 as to be capable of hugging it closely when pressed against it. There are one-or more perforations, i, leading from the exterior of the gland into the annular slot b through which the steam finds access, and, pressing down upon the rings, thereby keeps the rod 0 tightly packed. All the parts described are by preference of metal, though the rings may be made of any material suitable and proper for the purpose. The spur v, loosely fitting into the corresponding hole in the exterior of one of the sections, is to prevent this ring from turning around. Although we have shown the sections of the rings toothed together, yet it is obvious that the rings may be made in one piece, or that the sections may be differently jointed together.
We claim as our invention- The combination of the gland and gland-cap, arranged with reference to the cylinder as to have the full pressure of the steam around the gland, and having an annular chamber, as described, containing the packing ring or rings, the gland having one or more perforations to admit the steam directly on the back of the packing-ring, the whole designed to operate in connection with the piston-rod, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
