.A further and morespecitic object of my invention is to rovide n. novel and improved structure for a railway car in which the end sheet is reinforced and ri idiied by means of pressed corrugatio'ns wliich extend from one edge of said sheet to the other.
Another object of my invention is to provide an end structure for railway cars comprising novel means tor reinforcing the sheet metal end panel and t'or bracing and rigidif'ying the side training ot' the car. My

As the s iects 25. 27 .ire forint-d with con-v tiiiuous rori'ugations or ribs which extenih in each case, from one .side of the sheet. to the other. it. is possible. to pei-forni the operation of corrugating the. sheets by cold process without, stri-tubing the metal. as would bc .necessary if the shtwts had to be provided with fiat, oi non-corrugated margins at the sides.A Corrugated metal sheets, like sheets designated 25 and 27, may be manufactured by automatie'corrugating machines of familiar ty e. The improvement of my invention, t ierefore, cheapens the manufacture of ribbed or sheet metal car ends eliminates 'the danger of thinning or wealrening the sheets incident to subjecting the sheets to a pressin operation when hot, and furthermore, o viates the warpin and distorting often resulting when steel p ates or sheets of this character are heated and subjected at different points oftheir surfaces to unequal pressures. The Is'iide members 28 are relatively small so that no ditlculty is experienced in diein them out. The sheets may be made in stoc sizes and sheared olf at the edge so as tn fit cars of different sizes and dimensions. The side members 28, because of their configuration, have considerable -load bearing strength so that they may serve as load bearing elements. In this, or analogous constructions in which the attaching angles are separate from the ei'id sheets, it is not necessar to make the end sheets con form in wi thexactly to the width of the car. Any slight variation in the width of different cars will betaken care of by the overlap of the attacliin angles on the end sheets. If thick enoug'i metal is used, the wooden corner posts may be dispensed with .or used sim ily as nailing strips.
In Figs. to i, inclusive, I have shown a wooden end lining for'thesheet metal end illustratedV in these figures which lining, while havin a particular utility-in connection with tiis particular cnd construction, might, 'nererthe ess, be used with other corrugated or rib metal end structures as, for example, with the structures shown in the other figures of "ille annexed drawings. The lining consists of a number of cross pieces 42 which are rounded so as to lit into the concavities formed b v the corrugations, and of vertically disposed boards 43 secured to the cross ieces 42. The wooden structure so forni is referahly secured to the sheet metal end tend through the liningir and through the end sheets 25, 27. When the linin is firmly secured to the end sheet in this manner'itl rigidies the end and also rovides, in effect, a. brace extending across t ie end of the car betwen the corner postsand thereby riffidifies the 'car framing.` The spacing o the lining from the metal also provides inclosed .prevent the freezin y inea-ns of bolts 44 which ex-.

In this type of end the corrugations are closed by abutting against the attaching or side pieces 48, and the end sheets are arranged between the corner posts 33l in a. manner which makes it unnecessary to use a lining in order to provide a suitable brace f or the corner posts or to malte the car tight. It may be desirable, however, to use a wooden lining in this construction if the cargo is g1ain,so as to prevent the grain 75 from coming into contact with the metal. Undel1 such conditions a lining substantiall the same as the one shown in Fig. 2 could: obviously, be applied to this construction. The attaching members 48 are formed with 80 corrugated portions 49 which are offset inwardly so that they stand inside the corrupfations ot the sheets. and are also preferably ormed with angular flanges 50, and are secured to the car by means of bolts 51- which 85 pass through-the corner posts 33. This arrangement makes a very strong and rigid structure and one which is perfectly tight.
In Figs. 9,10 and 11 I have shown an other construction in which the end sheets 62, 63. formed preferably, with corrugations 64 which extend, as in the other construction above described, to the edves of the sheets, project beyond the sides o? the car and are secured thereto by angular attaching mema5 bers 65 whichare secured to the side of the car by bolts 66 passiii 1r through the corner' posts 33'?. these angular attaching members being formed with corrugated portions 67 which tit the corrugated margins of the sheets.

In combination with the corner posts of a railway car, of an end wall structure comprising a metal sheet formed with substantially horizontal corrugations and extending across the end of the car from corner post to corner post and angular attaching elements ha'ving flanges overlapping and secured to the corner posts and flanges to whicl'the vertical edges of said sheet are secured.
