Description

A. KJO'LSTAD.
APPARATUS FOR THE REHLLING O F DITCHES 0R BRAINS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 19. I918.

AnnnEAsxaoLsrAJ), or BYGDG, NEA R cHR sriANIA, NoRwAYJ APPARATUS FOR THE REFILL-ING or nrrrcrrns 0R DRAIns.
Application filed April 19, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREAS KJoLs'rAD, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Bygdo, near Christiania, in the Kingdom of Norway, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in the Apparatus for the Refilling of Ditches or Drains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
IVhile there have been invented suitable apparatus for the digging of ditches, there has as yet not been inuse any suitable apparatus for the refilling of ditches, especially of narrow ones (drains).
My invention relates to such an apparatus for the refilling of ditches.
My apparatus is illustrated by way of example in th accompanying drawings, Figure 1 being a side view with parts in section of such an apparatus, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
The apparatus comprises two main parts, a frame 1 carrying the scrapers or scoops 2, and a guide portion or keel 3.
The scrapers 2 are placed at an angle in relation to the direction in which the apparatus is drawn (2'. e. the direction of the ditch) and in such a way that they will act at varying distances from the longitudinal axis of the ditch. The frame carrying the scrapers therefore will act as a kind of harrow scooping the loose earth inward toward the middle of the ditch. To this frame is attached a central board 4, carrying at its .front end the drawing hook of the appara-' tus.
The guide keel 3, which is a part of the apparatus that is essential to insure its successful working, is at its front end hinged to the frame 1. It may suitably be made of an iron or steel tube and its lower part may suitably be furnished with a shoe 6 for tak- Specifica'tion'of Letters Patent.

ing up the wear. At its hind end the keel is provided with an upturned portion orarm 7, that may suitably be guided in a slot 8 in the central board a. To this latter board is attached a seat board 9, which is also fitted with a guide slot for the keel arm 7 The seat board or seat 9 may be connected with a hook on the keel arm by aid of a chain, link or, the like.
When the apparatus is in use the weight of the driver seated on the seat board 9 will keep the keel pressed against the earth in the ditch, the keel serving thus at the same time as a guide for the harrow frame 1 and as a compressor for the earth scooped into the ditch, by aid of the scrapers 2.
The apparatus is driven up and down the ditch as many times as is necessary to get the ditch completely filled, and the guide keel is adjusted upward as the filling of the ditch proceeds.
Instead of using a fixed shoe 6 on the keel for the compression of the earth I may clearly also obtain a similar efiect by using one or more rollers mounted on the keel for this purpose or any other suitable pressing device.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for refilling ditches or drains, the combination with scrapers or scoops for scooping the earth into the ditch, of a depending keel shaped guide member for steering said scrapers and simultaneously compressing the earth in the ditch, and a seat member connected to said depending guideand compression member in such way that the compression is efl'ected by the weight of the driver on said seat.
2. In an apparatus for refilling ditches or drains, the combination with scrapers or scoops for scooping the earth into the ditch, of a depending keel shaped guide member for steering said scrapers and simultaneously compressing the earth in the ditch. and a seat board connected to said depending guide and compressing member in such way as to vary the pressure by the driver changing his position on said seat board. a
3. In an apparatus for refilling ditches or drains, the combination with a frame and scrapers or scoops on said frame for scooping the earth into the ditch, of a depending keel shaped guide member for steering said scrapers and simultaneously compressing the earth in the ditch, said keel shaped guide member being hinged to said frame and provided with an upturned portion, and a seat board connected to said upturned portion and said frame in such Way as to vary the pressure by the driver shifting his position on the seat board.
In testimony that I claim th foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in 1- presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
