Description
v W. EVERS. Improvement in BagatelIe-Tables.
Patented Sep.10,1872.
UNITED STATES- PATENT Orrrcn.
WILLIAM EVERS, or SAN raancrsoo, CALIFORNIA.
IM PROVEMENT IN BAGATELLE-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,269, dated September 10, 1872.
SPEGHIGATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EVERs, of San Francisco, San Francisco county, State of California, have invented an Improved Bagatelle-Table; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled :in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of tables for playing games upon, which are known as bagatelle-tables; and it also includes an improved game of bagatelle.
border to explain my invention so that others will be able to understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my table. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
A represents a table which is constructed similar to an ordinary billiard-table. At one end of this table, midway between the sides, I mount a horizontal wheel or cylinder, B, upon a pivot. In order to do this properly, a platform, 0, is constructed across the end of the table, in the middle of which a semicircular opening is made so that one-half of the wheel or-cylinder B will be incased in the opening, while the other half will be exposed toward the table. An ornamented yoke, E, spans the opening at the inner edge of the platform, so that the cylinder will be supported in the yoke above and in the table beneath it. This cylinder is hollow and its cover or top is provided with slots at intervals midway between its center and sides. A plate, f, is secured upon a spring inside of the cylinder, directly below each slot, so that it will pass up through the slot when free. The
rear upper edge of the slot projects forward slightly, so as to form a catch under which the upper end of the plate can be placed when it is depressed, and thus be retained. A plug, 9, with slightly-enlarged head projects horizontally from each of the plates to the outside of the cylinder near the bottom, by striking which, by a slight blow, the plate f is released and projected upward by the spring. A cushion, h, extends around the lower end of the cylinder between the plugs g, in order/to prevent the balls from injuring the cylinder, and to give them a rebound. Each of the plates f is marked with a number which indicates its value. On each side of the cylinder one or more holes or pockets, 'i, are made through the table which communicates with an inclined drawer or shelf, J. This drawer or shelf is divided into longitudinal compartments, as shown, each of which is also marked with a number.
The game is played with billiard-balls and cue, in the manner of playing the game of billiards. The first object aimed at by the playeris the head of one of the plugs 9, so as to release one of the plates f. As soon as the plates in the exposed part of the cylinder have been freed,
his next aim will be to strike the cylinder B at one side of its center, so as to cause it to turn or revolve about its center, which it will freely do, and thus expose other plugs until the entire number have been freed. The player counts for himself the number of each plate which he releases, and should his ball drop through one of the pockets, the inclination of the drawer or shelf will cause it to roll down to the opposite or players end of the table in one of the compartments; the player then adds the number which is marked over the compartment to his string and they count for game.
By this means I provide a new and interesting game, which combines skill and amusement at one and the same time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The revolving cylinder B, with its spring plates f, and operating plugs g, in combination with the table A, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
WILLIAM EVERS.
Witnesses J. L. BOONE, G. M. RICHARDSON.
