5 SHEETSSHEET 5- HUBER/1 LANG, OF CHICAGO,
arnnr @FFICE.
' rmmme-rnnss.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUBERT LANG, a cit zen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printlng-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to processes, mechanisms and devices for cutting, associating and folding a plurality of webs in a particular manner-and so as to secure automatically by machinery products heretofore obtainable only by hand work, or hand insetting or stuffing.
, Further ob 'ects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will be obviousherefro m, or may be learned by practlce with the invention; such objects and advantages being realized through the means, lnstrumentallties, and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, comblnatlons and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying-drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to explain the principles thereof.
Of the drawings:
Figures 1, 1", and 1, when laid lengthwise together constitute a front elevation, largely diagrammatic in character, of a machine constructed in accordance w1th the principles of the'invehtion (in this arrangement. Fig. 1 is at the left and Fig. 1 at the right) Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, diagrammatic, top plan corresponding to Fig. 1 and small portions of the ends of Figs. 1 and 1, the dotted lines across the figure serving to indicate the full width of the web, the half width or slitted web, and the dot and dash lines the lines or axis of longitudinal fold thereof:
Fig. 3 is a section substantially on the line AB of Fig. 1", looking in the direction of the arrows; and
-Figs. 4 and 5 are diagrammatic showings of the way the webs are associated and folded.
It is frequently desirable, especially in Specification of Letters Patent.

certain kinds of fast web perfecting work to have products of different sizes and folds, and otherwise differing, as for instance in color, delivered automatically and completely with one product inserted or stuffed within the other, the work being done entirely by the machine. An example of such work is found in newspaper printmg, where the color section, magazine sect1on, and the like are delivered within a newspaper, or a section or part 'of a newspaper of the usual size. In the machine of the present invention, a plurality of such sections or portions of smaller size or fold (usually half the size or fold of the newspaper) are printed and folded in the same press with the newspaper itself and inserted or stuffed t-herewithin by the machine itself, the newspaper receiving the final transverse fold in the usual manner with the other sections, such as the color and magazine sections, inclosed therewithin. Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by way of example one embodiment of the invention, a paper. roll 1 (Fig. 1) is adapted to supply a web to the press in the usual manner. This roll is supported by suitable mechanism, not shown, the showing in the drawings being largely diagrammatic. A roll 2 is adapted to be used alternately with the roll 1 as a source of supply, one roll being drawn from while the other is renewed or replenished.
The web 3 from either of said rolls is led between the form cylinder 4 and the impression cylinder 5 of the first printing couple. The inking system for form cylinder 1 is indicated generally by 6. The web 3 then passes between a form cylinder 7 and an impression cylinder 8, the inking mechanism for form cylinder 7 being indicated by 9. The web 3 is the full width of the press and after being so perfected is slit longitudinally by the rotary slitter 10. Thereafter one half of the web 3 is associated with the other half of the web by passing over two turning bars 11 and 12. In
so doing the upper half of web 3 in Fig. 2
(being the rear half of Fig. 1*) is associated with and brought below the lower half in Fig. 2 and the front half in Fig. 1. The said sections are indicated at 3 and 3 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These two associated sections of the web 3 are then run over a roller 13 and over a longitudinal plenished. The web 20 passes between theimpression cylinder 21 and the form cylinder 22, (Fig. 1) with which cylinder cooperates the inking mechanism 23, the web 20 thus receiving one color on one side from the aforesaid printing couple; The web then passes upwardly between the impres- 1 sion cylinder 24 and form cylinder'25, with which coiiperates inking mechanism 26, the web thereby receiving a second color upon the same side as from fornrcylinders 21, 22.
The web 20 passes over-the roller 27 and thence running downwardly between impression cylinder 28 and form cylinder 29, with which coiiperates the inking mechanism, 30.- From this printing couple the web 20 receives a third color upon the same side. The web 20 passes thence between impression cylinder 31, and form cylinder 32, with which cylinder codperates inking mechanism 33, the web thereby receiving a fourth color upon the same side.
The web 20, passing downwardly, crosse over and passes between the impression cylinder 34 and form cylinder 35, with which cotiperates-the inking mechanism 36. The web 20 thereby receives the first color upon the opposite or second side of the web. The web passes thence between the impression cylinder 37 and form cylinder 38, with which cooperates the inking mechanism 39, the web thereby receiving a second color upon said second or opposite side. Web 20 then passes between impression cylinder 40 and form cylinder 41, with which coiiperates inking mechanism 42, the web thereby receiving a thirdcolor upon said second or opposite side. Said web 20 passes thence between impression cylinder 43 and form cylinder 44, with which cooperates an inking mechanism 45, to receive a fourth color upon said second or opposite side.
The web 20 has thus been perfected in four colors, although it will be understood that the arrangement of the web just described is not restrictive, but is illustrative of one arrangement for running the web through the press. By the described arrangement, a full width perfected web may be printed in three colors and in black on both sides for such work as the comic and other parts or supplements of Sunday papers and the like.
The perfected web 20 is slit longitudinally by the rotary slitter 50, the two halves passmg thence, in accordance with certain features of the invention, to two separate longitudinal folders to be folded thereby and in, by the folder 55 as will be later further describedr The other hFlf 'of the web, 20, the part 20, passes about a turning bar 56 and from thence about a roller 57 and from there to a roller 58 and over a longitudinal former or folder 59. At the roller 58 and folder 59 there is likewise associated with the web 20* certain products from the other side of the; press (Fig. 1), which are folded therewith, and preferably therewithin, as will be further described hereinafter.
Referring to the part of the press shown in Fig. 1, a paper supply roll 67 .is provided, with an alternate roll 68. The web 70 is run therefrom between an impression cylinder supplied with suitable inking mechanisnn not shown, may also be employed for putting on a tint or for printing in an additional color upon the web. The web 70 passes thence, over suitable rollers to a rotary longitudinal slitter 78, and from thence the lower half 7 0 of the web in Fig. 2, (being the front half thereof in Fig. 1*), passes over the turning bar 79 and thence about rollers 80 and 81 to'the roller 54.
Referring again to Fig. 1, a paper roll 84 and a paper roll 85 are shown as alternative sources of web supply, from which runs web 86. This web passes between an impression cylinder 87 and a form cylinder 88, with which coiiperates inking mechanism 89. The web passes thence between an impression cylinder 90 and a form cylinder 91, with which latter cooperates an inking mechanism 92.
Web 86 passes thence about suitable rollers 93 and 94 and 95 to a rotary slitter 96. From this slitter the lower half 86 in Fig. 2 (being the front half in Fig. 1 of the web 86 passes. over a turning bar 97, and thence about rollers 98 and 99 to the roller 54,
where it is associated with and between the nally, and making a fold or signature of quarter the width of the original web.
When the web 70 is slit longitudinally by the rotary slitter 78, the upper part 70? web 20 and with the half web 86 therebetween, in the same manner as has already been explained with reference to the half webs 70*, and 86.
The half web 86', being the upper part of web 86 in Fig. 2 and the rear part in Fig. 1", passes over turning bar 103 and about rollers 104 and 105 to the roller 58, where it is associated with and between the half webs I 20 and 70". z
Thehalf webs 20 and 86 and 70 in running over the former or folder are longitudinally folded together, with the web 20 on the outside. The product runs between rollers 110 and 111 and 112 and 113, thereby completing the fold, and the associated webs aredirected to' the roller 13, to be there associated with the superimposed halves 3 and 3 of the web 3. The associated and folded webs 20 70 and 83 are brought to the roller 13 with their longitudinally disposed fold at the center of the superposed webs 3 and 3 and with their edges at the outside edge of the webs 3 and 3 as shown in Fig. 4.
In like manner the webs 20", 86" and '70 pass over roller 58 and former 59 and between rollers 114 and 115 and 116 and 117, being thereby centrally longitudinally folded with the web-20 on the outside. The associated and folded webs are likewise led to the roller 13 and are there associated with the superimposed halves 3* and 3 of the web 3. The associated and folded webs 20", 70 and 86 are brought to the roller 13 with their fold at the center of the superposed webs 3 and 3 and with their longitudinally disposed fold alongside of the fold of the webs 20 86 and 7 0.,- and .with their edges at the other edge of the superposed webs 3 and 3", as shown in Fig. 4.
In accordance with certain features of the invention, means are provided for perfecting another web and associating it with the webs already described, with the folded webs between it and .the superposed webs 3 and 3,
such other web also being preferably slit and superposed as shown 1n Flg. 4. Referring to Fig. 1, a source of paper supply, a
' paper roll 120, provides a web 121. This web runs between an impression cylinder 1 22 and a form cylinder 123, which form-cyllnder is provided with an inking mechanism 124. Web 121 then passes between impression cylinder 125 and form cylinder 126, the
inking mechanism of the latter being indicated by 127.
Web 121 is then directed from the rolls 128 to a rotary longitudinal slitter129. The rear portion in Figs. 1 and 1,(being the' upper portion in Fig. 2) of the web, is then which are on the one side, and the webs 129 and 129 which are on the other side being thereby centrally longitudinally folded. The previously folded and associated webs 20*, 86 and 70 pass down one side of the. former l4 and the other previously folded and associated webs 20 86* and 70 pass down the other side of the former 14, but neither-is folded thereby, as their folds coincide or come together at the center line of the former 14. The pairs of folding rollers 136, 137 and 138, 139 cooperate with former 14 to complete the fold.
The webs so folded pass between cutting cylinders 140 and 141 and are cut thereby into sheet length. The cut off product then passes ,to a cyllnder 142, guided by roller 143, and may be either delivered unfolded ormay receive a transverse fold in a well known manner. The final product is delivered to suitable means such as a traveling delivery 144.
It will be understood that the webs may be arranged or run otherwise than described and thereby the nature of the product may a be varied to a greater or less extent. The arrangement described herein is such as produces the product described or pointed out, namely one wherein two inserts are provided, each having a portion in'multicolor and a portion in a single color, with an added color or tint if desired, the two inserts being inclosed within the folded newspaper or like product. By means of the present invention, the colored supplements or other supplements are printed in the one machine together with out departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
