Description

M. E. BENAS.
n ROCKING TOY. APPLICATION FILED DEC.27 1918.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
MAURICE E. BENAS, OF EIARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
BOOKING TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application led December 27, 1918. Serial No. 268,522.
To all whom t may concern Be it'known that I, MAURICE E. BENAS, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, such as will enable others skllled in the art to. which it appertainsI to make and use .the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rocking toys to be used by children after the nature of a combined see-saw and hobbyhorse. As incident to its use there is a certain amount of progress made over the ground as well as the rocking motion referred to, I have called the device a rookomobile.
The device will be more fully understood after reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are llndlcated by similar reference symbols throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of the complete toy;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the toy;
Fig. 3 shows a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 shows a section along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The toy comprises two side boards 1, each provided with a curved lower face 2, which side boards are inclined inward from the bottom toward the top, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, so as to give a broader tread, and the tops of these boards are connected together by the seat piece 3.
The side boards 1 and the seat piece 3 are also firmly connected `together by means of the end pieces 4, who-se lower ends are also dove-tailed as at 5 to form a firm joint with the side boards 1, and these end-pieces 4 are inclined outward as at 6 to form back rests for the children using the toy.
The side boards are further braced by means of the braces 7, which are preferably notched as at 8 to engage the side boards 1, and are provided with projecting ends having depressions 9 to serve as stirrups for the riders of the device.
The wedges 10 serve toy lock the braces 7 in engagement with the side boards 1. Upright pieces 11 are secured to the sides of the boards 1 and connected together at their tops to form a handle bar 12. These uprights 11 are also braced bythe cross piece 13 which is secured by the nails or bolts 14 to the seat piece 3. The end pieces 4 are secured to the side boards 1 and seat piece 3 by nails or bolts 15.
The entire construction may be made of wood, which may be readily shipped in the knock-down form and set up at the place of sale or use; it being then only necessary to drive a few nails to have the parts fully assembled and in operative arrangement.
The device is especially intended for the amusement of two children, or of several pairs of children. The children face each other, seated on the board 3, and with their hands grasp the handle bar 12 and place their feet:` in the stirrups 9. Rocking may be more or less vigorously carried on Without the danger of the device toppling over backward, or without the danger of either child falling olf the end of the toy.
It will be obvious that two or more children may be seated at each end of the device if it be made long enough, or if the children be small enough.
The device will, of course, be preferably painted in fancy colors to be more attractive to the eyes of the children. It will beseen that I provide an easily constructed, durable, cheap and highly entertaining toy for the use of children.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A toy comprising two side boards having arcuate bottoms. said boards being set at an angle to each other so as to form a broad base, a seat piece secured to the top edge of each of said side boards, end pieces secured to the ends of said seat piece and projecting upwardly therefrom, and each provided with a dove-tailed end projecting between said side boards, transverse braces spanning said side pieces and provided with projecting ends to form stirrups, and an upwardly projecting transverse frame located between said stirrups and provided with a transverse handle bar, substantially as described.
2. A toy comprising two side boards having arcuate bottoms, said boards being set at an angle to each other so as to form a broad base, a seat piece secured to the top edge of cach of said side boards, inclined end pieces secured to the ends of said seat piece and projecting upwardly therefrom, and each provided with a dove-tailed end projecting between said side -boards, said end pieces being secured to said side boards ,and to said seat piece, transverse braces spanning said side pieces and provided with projecting ends notched to form stirrups, and an upwardly projecting transverse frame located between said stirrups and provided with a transverse handle bar, substantially as described.
8. A toy comprising two side boards having arcuate bottoms, said boards being set at an angleto each other so as to form a broad base, a seat piece secured to the top' edge of each of said side boards, inclined end'pieces secured to the ends of said s'eat piece and projecting upwardly therefrom,
and each provided with av dove-tailed end projecting between said sideboards, said end pieces being secured to said side boards and to said seat piece, transverse braces spanning said side pieces and provided with projecting ends to form stirrups, said braces being provided with notches to engage said side boards, wedges locking said notches in engagement with said side boards, and an vupwardly projecting transverse frame projecting downward between said stirrups and provided with a handle bar at the upper end thereof, said transverse frame being secured to said side boards and to said seat piece, substantially as described.
