"ALEXANDERMOUDE'LMAN,fonivnw voran,` n. Y.
. TQaZZ whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER IYonnnn- MAN, a citizen ofthe United States, and` a resident of thecityof Nevvl-York, borough of Manhattan, inthe county and State of j New York, have invented a new, andflnr proved TipattachingI lmphlement, offwhich the following isa full, clear, and`e`Xaotde-`` scription@` e The object of the invention is ,to provide a j new and improved implemente-or hand-tool and its return bent member 13 more especially `designed 1for.fattachingk me#4 tallic tips tothe ends o fkstrings `such as `are; used for lacing shoes,y jcorsets fandlike articles, and arranged enable the `user to readily replace a worn out or brokentip by a new one- Anotherobjectistoenablethe user to properly manipllilatethe tool requiring unduephysicallekertion.
With these and other objects inview, the inventionconsists `of certain novel` features of constructions, as hereinafter' shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation ofthe tip attaching implement, the section bes ing 011 the line 1--1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. V3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the jaws in closed position and with the tip fastened in place to a string;
Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the tip attaching implement arranged for simultaneously aiiixing two tips to the ends of a string;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a tip blank; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a sition on the end of a shoe string. The implement or tool, comprises es` sentially the lixed jaw 10 and a movable jaw 11, of which the fixed jaw 10 is in the form of a steel plate 12 having at its front end a return bent member 13 parallel to the plate 12, the bend forming the jaw 10. The plate 12 form a guide for the front end of the movable jaw 11 to tip in pobeing provided with a concave reces@ 14C fthe arrangement described the l implement or tool is composed y `Leatenteu Aug. 5, 1919.
the jaw 10 formed bythebend, as above eX- plained. It is understood that the jaws 10 and` 1l` are adapted to receive between their a yUfshaped metal clip blank 17, into which is` inserted one end 18 of a string 19 to be provided with the tip 20. On moving the jaw lltowardthe fixed jaw 10 the tip blank 17 lis closed `aroundtlie end 18 of thegstring 19 thus providing the latter with the tip 20. The fixed jaw plate 12 is fastened by screws 25 to frame 26 provided with an integral handle 27, the frame 26 having two side men'ibe'rs ;28betv`veen which is confined the movable jaw l1, `The side members 28 of theframe26` are connected with each other at` their `front end forms asupport for the return bent member 13 of the jaw plate 12. e n lThe movable jaw 11 is preferably made `in thegforni of a plateprovided `at its rear "end` with an angular lug 30 extending downwardly into a recess 31 formed in the pivotal end 32 of a hand lever 33 having its pivot 34 attached to the side members 28 of the frame 26. The handle 33 is disposed opposite the handle 27 and a spring 35 is interposed between the said handles 27 and 33 to normally hold the lever 33 and consequently the movable jaw 11 in the open position illustrated in Fig. l. The lower end of the handle 33 is provided with a bend 36 in which screws a stop screw 37 adapted to abut against the free end of the handle 27 to limit the closing movement of the lever 33 and that of the movable jaw 11. It is understood that by adjusting the stop screw 37 the forward movement of the jaw 11 is limited to insure a proper attaching of the tip 20 to the end 18 of the string 19 according to the thickness of the said string. From the foregoing it will be seen that by tip attaching of very few parts arranged to properly coact without danger of getting out of order.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, the movable jaw 50 is provided at the under side with a recessed shoulder 51 which coacts with the end of the return bent member 52 of the plate 53 forming the fixed jaw 54 with which coacts the forward end 55 of the jaw 50. The plate 53 is fastened by screws 56 to the frame 57 having a handle 58. The
under side of the movable jaw 50 is provided with rack teeth 60 in mesh with a toothed segment 61 formed on a 'movable lever 62 fulerumed at 63 on the frame 57. By movine' the lever 62 toward the Handle '58 the.
jaw 50 is moved forward 'to permit of attaching two tips simultaneously to the ends of a string, it being understood that one tip iS etteetedbythe; eoaetien 0f the retelte bentn'iemb'er 52 andlth'e'shoulder 5l. The return bent member 52-s'lidingly engages crossbar 64 forming` part of the Jframe 57.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to seeure by Lettere Patentiv l 1Q A tool of the type described, comprising a pair of coacting iixed and movable jaws, the said fixed jaw being: in the form of a plate having at ite forward end a return bent member forming with thefpLl-atel a guide for the said movablejaiv, a frame pro,- vided with a handle and on v vhieh' the Said platel is secured, the frame having crossibar.
forming a bearing for the said returnbent member, and means mounted on the said frame to aotuate the' said inovable ja \v.
2. A tool oi the type deseribed, compris;- ing a pair of coaloting fixedv andinov'able jaws, the said fixed 'jaw being' in the iioiin of a plate having` at its for/Ward,k enjd a return, bent member felflene with the plate a guide Jfor rthe said movable jaw, a frame provided with a handle and on which the said plate is seemed, the frame having a crossbar forming a bearing -for the said re turn bent member, a spring-pressed lever fulcrumed on the said frame and disposed oppoeite the said handle, and coactingineans connecting the lever and the movable jaw toiaetuate'the latter on alternately preseing and releasing the lever.
3. tool of the type desribed, comprising' a' pair of coacting fixed and movable jaws, the said fixed jaw being in the form of a plate having at its 'forward end a return bent member forming with the plate a guide, for the saidl movable jaw, a frame provided vvith an integral handle and on Which the said plate is` secured, the ranie having a erossbar for the said return bent member te reet en, the 'Seid meveble jew being in theform of' a plate having its for- W'ed endextfendire between the plete eed its; were. beet, member, the sides ofthe me"- abvle jaw being eonfined between the sides ef; the' f1e1-11`e-,` the Seid; meveble. jew having e lue, and e Spring .reeeed level" 'f'ulerun'led en the. frame provided with a notch engaged bv them of. the Seid meveble. jaw- YoUDE-LMAN.
