MACHINE FOR BENDING LEAF-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application filed April 14., 1919. Serial No. 289,798.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it .known that I, HENRY Porrm- BARGER, citizen of the United States, residing at 115 W. Huron St, Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Leaf- Springs, of which the following is a specification.
In machines used for bending and forming leaf springs by means of reciprocating dies, it is customary to employ what are known as keys to form the die faces, these keys being adjustable according to the curvature of the springs desired. Hitherto different sized keys have been used for springs of different widths. I
The object of this invention is to provide a key which can be adjusted to accommodate leaves of different widths, so that the same set of keys can be used at all times. For this purpose they are made in two sections, one of which is adjustable with respect to the other, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine, provided with a set of the keys indicated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a pair of the keys in open position. Fig. 3 is a similar view in closed position, and adjusted for a narrower spring than in Fig. 2. Fig.4: is a sectional view showing the means for adjustment.
In Fig. l a pair of bending dies is shown of the ordinary construction, and employing sets of the improved keys indicated at K. Each of these keys consists of a stem or shank 1, having a recessed head 7, machined to receive an adjustable member 2. This member has a rear portion 9, which slides up and down between vertical guide ways 8, formed at the sides of the recess 7, these guideways being parallel and open at the top, the recess 7 being also open at the top. The block or member 2 has a forwardly presented jaw or part 6, which has on its under side a shoulder 10, to engage the upper edge of the leaf indicated at S thev portion projecting above the spring serving to hold the same down to its place. The cooperating jaw is of the same general construction, except that its ustable piece 5 does not overhang the work but is arranged to contact only with the side thereof.
The adjustable pieces 2 and 5 are each tapped vertically to receive a non-traveling screw 3, which is shouldered into the bottom of the key, as indicated at 12, so that it may be turned by a wrench applied to the head thereof. By adjusting the screws the blocks 2 and 5 can be raised or lowered, to agree with the width of the spring leaf to be bent or formed. The blocks may be fixed at adjustment by lock nuts 4: on the screws.
By the means described it will be seen that one set of keys can be adjusted to receive work of various widths, and a complete change of keys, as heretofore, is unnecessary.
I claim:
1. A die member or key for a spring bending machine, comprising a shank having a recessed head with a lower projecting jaw adapted to bear against a spring at the lower edge thereof, an adjustable part slidable transversely in said recess and having an upper projecting jaw adapted to bear against the spring at the upper edge thereof, and an adjusting screw connecting said head and adjustable part.
2. A die member or key for a spring bending machine, comprising a shank having a head with a vertical guide recess in the face thereof and a projecting lower jaw at the bottom of the recess, an adjustable member slidable up and down in said recess and having an upper jaw projecting over the lower jaw, and an adjusting screw tapped through said adjustable member and bearing against the bottom of the head, to
adjust said member up or down.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY POFFINBARGER. Witnesses:
