To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIoI-I OLINEK, a a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Edmonton, in the Province ofAlberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements :in Automatic Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gate adapted for opening automatically upon being approached by a vehicle, thereby rendering it unnecessary for a person to alight from the vehicleand open the gate prior to driving therethrough.
A further objectof the invention is the provision of a gate adapted for use at any desired point and designed to automatically open and remain open during the travel of the vehicle through the gate the latter automatically returning to its closed position after the vehicle is moved a suitable distance beyond the gate;
A still further object of the invention is to provide a gate automatically operable by an oncoming vehicle for opening and closing without the services of an attendant, the
structure being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be understood that my automatic gate may be used wherever desired and includes a rectangular frame mounted upon or embedded in the earth such as 10, the said frame having longitudinal side rails 11 and transverse end beams 12. The shorter floor section 13 has its outer end j ournaled upon a transverse rod 16 com nected betweenithe side rails 11 adjacent the other end beam 12. Longitudinal braces 17 are secured beneaththe floor section 14 with their inner ends connectedby hinges 18 with the adjacent ends of similar braces 17 secured beneath thefioor section 13. Journaling blocks 19 are provided upon the braces 17 and through which an operatingshaft 20is secured. A central block 21 p is provided beneath the floor section 13 while a central. longitudinal brace 22 secured beneath the fioorsect1on14 1s provided with a slot 23 in its free end adapted for accommodating the adjacent side of the block 21 during the swinging movements of the floor sections 13 and 14.
A transverse strip 24 is secured between the side rails 11 having helical springs 25 mounted thereon and upon which the braces 17 are seated. Opposite posts 26 are provided upon the rails 11 at the sides of the inner ends of the floor sections 13 and 14 while a gate 27 is swingingly mounted upon each of said posts by means of hinges 28. A rocker 29 isprovided adjacent each post 26 pivoted by means of a pin 30 to the adj acent side rail 11, the shorter arm 31 of each rocker being freely positioned through an eye 32 at the adjacent end of the shaft 20, the opposite ends of said shaft projecting outwardly of the frame through slots 33 in the rails 11.
The longer arm 34 of each rocker 29 extends through a ring 35 of a bracket 36 secured to the adjacent gate 27 by holdfast devices such as the screws 37. The springs 25 normally maintain the inner portions of the floor sections 13 and 14 elevated with the shaft 20 at the upper ends of the slots 33. When a vehicle such as an automobile approaches the gates 27 upon either one of the platforms or floor sections 13 and 14, the same will be depressed against the action of the springs 25. The lowering of the shaft 20 swings the rockers 29 upon their pins 30 positions as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, while the swingingmovements of the gates are indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2' thereof.
The Weight of the vehicle upon the floor sections 13 and 14 when the vehicle is traveling thereover between the posts 26 maintains the floor sections depressed with the gates 27 open until the vehicle passes substantially off of the said sections over one of the end beams 12 ofthe frame. When the weight is removed from the floor sections, the springs 25 return said sections to. their normal elevated positions which returns the rockers 29 to their normal positions, closing the gates 27 The arm 34 of each rocker 29 is slightly resilient, preventing the same from breaking during theoperation of the gates and causing the gates to quickly fly to their open and closed positions whenever the rockers are shifted. A guard 38 is provided upon each rail 11 over the arm 34 of the adjacent rocker 29.
The operation of the device in automatically opening and closing the gates 27 will be apparent from this description of the invention, and it will be seen that the gates are Copies .of this patent niay be obtained for serviceable as fence gates as well as for use in buildings such as garages where normally closed gates or doors are found desirable.
VVh'at I claim as new is2- A device of the class described, comprising a rectangular frame having end beams, a transverse strip between the said beams, a platform hinged to one of said beams, a; relatively shorter-platform swingingly mounted adjacent the other of said beams, hinge connections between the adjacent inner ends of said platforms, springs upon said strip upon which one of said platforms is seated, a shaft transversely secured beneath one of said platforms having terminal rings outwardly of said frame, opposite upright posts adja cent the inner ends of the platforms, a gate hingedly carried by each of said posts, a rocker for each gate pivoted to the side rails with the shorter portion of each rocker freely extending through the said rings, and operative connectionsbetween the longer resilient portion of said rockers operatively connected to the said gates.
