To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVANDER A. SMrrI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Implements, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a carpenters implement.

The object of the invention is to provide an implement of the character described the combination of a gage, a butt gage, a pencil holder, a scriber, a scratchall, a compass and a divider.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide an implement of the character described which is compact in form so that it may be readily carried in the pocket of a garment, so as to be convenient for use whenever it is required.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a side view of the device.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate Similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1, refers to a tubular member, slightly tapering in form, the large end of which is closed, as at 2, and the other end of which is open, and adapted to receive a pencil, 3. This end has an open slot 4, to permit a certain amount of expansion so that it will grip the pencil when the same is inserted therein. Near the large end, the member 1 is flattened, as at 5, on opposite sides. The numeral 6, refers to a scriber which is arcuate in cross section, and the free end of which is tapered to a sharp point 7, the other end thereof is bifurcated, forming the fingers 8, 8, which embrace the fiattened portions 5, of the tubular member 1. A pin 9 passes through the flattened portion of the member 1, and also through the fingers 8, 8, forming bearings for said fingers, and one end of this pin is threaded to receive the thumb nut 10 which is screwed thereon. In addition to forming a pencil holder, the tubular member 1 in. combination with the scriber 6, forms a compass, scriber and a divider, and they may also be used as a gage and scratchall, when so desired, all of these implements being necessary for marking and gaging in carpentry work.

The closed end 2 has an orifice 11, provided to receive the gage 12. This last mentioned member is inserted through the orifice 11, and its inner end fits between the reduced sides 5, 5, of the tubular member 1, and has an oblong slot 13, which receives the said pin 9. The outer end of the gage 12, has a tang 14:, provided for use in marking in carpentry work. The sides 5, 5, are resilient so that when the thumb nut 10 is screwed up tight, it will clamp the gage 12, and secure the same in position against the movement but when loosened, the gage 12,

may be adjusted so as to bring the tang 1A,-

the required distance from the end 2, of the tubular member 1, so that the implement may also be used as a gage for different kinds of work.

What I claim is i A device of the character described, including a tubular member, having resilient sides, one end of which is closed, and the other end of which is open, said closed end being provided with an orifice, a member one end of which is fitted through said orifice, and is provided with a slot, and means passing through the tubular member and through said slot whereby the resilient sides of the tubular member may be clamped against the member fitted through said orifice and to secure said last mentioned member against movement and a tang carried by the other end of said last mentioned member.
