Description
J. A. TRAUT. Improvement in Clamps.
Patented Se 10,1872.
@U Juf@ UNITED STATES A JUSTUS vA. TRAUT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS.,
y Speciieation forming port of Letters Patent No. BLIQS, dated ScptenaberlO, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUsTUs A. TRAUT, of New Britain, county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, commonly used by cabinet-makers, carpenters, Src., for compressing frame or panel work firmly to a ioint 5 and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same I will proceed to describe its construction, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the gures.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of this improvement. Figr is a top or edge view of the same.
a is a c1ampbar, having notches b formed at proper intervals in one side of said bar. c o are clamp-heads, adjusted and rmly held upon the upper side of the clamp-bara by grappling-irons d d', one end of which is secured to the heads c o', while the other end enters the notches b. The head o is provided with a screw-threaded-nut elevation, into which is fitted closely, and turns freely, a clamping-screw, e. Both of the heads are provided with guide-plates, f, which extend down each side of the bar a, and having guidepins g, which are fitted into grooves h in each side of said bars, and prevents the back end of the heads from being displaced from the bar. A pin or screw, t', is placed, when desirable, in front of the guide-plates f to steady or hold the clamp-head o Iirmly in a iixed position upon the bar. k is a clamping faceplate, having ,a sliding guide, fm, which is fitted to andslides on the upper side of the clamp-bar a through the head c'; also having on each side thereof guide-plates m to keep i it (the clamping-plate 7c) in a true position on the clamp-bar. The end of the screw e i's f1tted and secured to turn freely in the back of the clamping-plate 7c, so that it will move the plate k back and forth on the bar e bythe aotion of said screw in the' common way.
The clamp-head o is fitted' to the clamp-bar a', the face-plate portion of which is held in true position on the clamp-bar by the grappling-iron d by means of 4a spindle, o, having its bearing in the angles of hthe head c at l, the upper side of which is iiattened to form a bearing forthe spring q, which is secured by a piu or screw on the upper side and rear end of the head c.
Thus I am enabled to produce a clamp which will hold its parts together in ready working order, and is susceptible of being used with convenience in any desired position without the annoyance commonlyexperieneed in the use of this class of tools.
Having thus shown the nature, construetion, and advantage of this invention so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine therefrom, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved manufacture of clamp, viz.: the combination of the adjustable heads o o', face-plates 7c, screw c, spring q, grapple-irons d, and bar a, substantially as shown and set forth.
