At the present time, the practice as to governing a steam turbine of 500 kw. or larger is to use an oil-operated valve gear controlling the governor valve or valves, the pressure against the oil piston of this valve gear being varied as required by means of a pilot valve actuated by a speed governor, usually a centrifugal governor. In the case of valve gear of such type, it is speeiifi cation of Letters fatent.

1 necessary to furnish means, such for eX ample as a pump, which Wlll malntain the OllllSBCl to operate such valve ear under' a considerable pressure, usually between 80 and 40 pounds. For lubrication, the turbine is customarily provided with another oil pressure system, maintained at from 3 to 5 pounds pressure. The ordinary method of governing at present in use, therefore, involves two oil pressure systems, with attendan't complications. By the invention herein described I dispense with the, higher pres sure of these oil systems, substituting there fora much simpler elastic fluid pressure system, the elastic fluid being drawn, pref erably, from the supply line by which steam or other working fluid under pressure is supplied to the turbine.
In the drawing, 1 designates the nozzle ring of an elastic fluid turbine, 2 the main high pressure steam chest of that turbine, receiving its steam supply through the main governor valve 4. This valve 4 is of the double balanced puppet type, comprising valve disks 13 mounted on a valve spindle 5, to which spindle is connected piston 6, movable in a cylinder 14. A spring 7 is located in said cylinder 14, above the piston 6, and tends to press that piston and valve disks 13 downward. Steam orotherworking fluid under pressure is supplied from the'inlet side of the valve 4, through a pilot valve 8, to the portion 9 ofthe cylinder 14:
beneath the piston 6. The pilot valve 8 is also of the double balanced puppet type, comprising valve disks 15 mounted upon a spindle 15 connected by a rocker lever 11 to aspeed governor 12, preferably ofthe centrifugal type.
A conduit 10 leads from the chamber 9 of cylinder 6; and preferably leads fromthe pipe connection connecting valve 8 Y with cylinder chamber 9. This conduit 10 is connected toany suitable sourc'eof lower pressure, but preferably is connected to an auxiliary steam chest 3 of the turbine, which steam chest 3 is provided with means, such as one or more nozzles 16, whereby the steam so supplied to auxiliary steam chest 3 may do useful work; such nozzle or nozzles 16 being so proportioned that any slight alteration of the position of valve disks 15 will immediately cause change of pressure in steam chest 3, conduit 10 and chamber 9,
