Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN A. Haonas'rnom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Paper-Guides, of which t e following is a specification,
This invention relates to paper feeding means for typewriting machines and has for its primary object to provide an improved construction, combination, and arrangement of parts in devices of this character. -.One of the objects of this invention is to provide improved side ges for guiding sheets to the platen and improved means for mounting said side gages in connection with a paper table, which is pivotally mounted to render more accessib e the tabulating mechanism in the rear of the machine. Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the appended claims, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings vvhic show a preferred embodiment.
In the drawings,--
Figure 1 isafront elevation of a typewriter carriage, parts bein broken away to show the preferred embo iment of my mvention;
Fig. 2 is a'top plan view of the same, parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, parts being broken away and parts shown in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a fra entary view taken from the rear and be ow one of the marginal guides;
Fig. 5 is arear elevation of one end of the paper table mount.
Referring'moreparticularly to the drawing, the typewriter carriage comprises end frames 1, 2, connected by a longitudinal rail or beam 3. A scale bar 4 also connects the end frames 1 and 2. A 'fixed plate or table 5 extends between the end frames 1 and2 and .is connected thereto b means of flanges '7. The fixed plate or tab e 5 is provided with a' rearwardly presented flange 6 upon which is. slidably mounted ad acent elther side of the carria a slide 8 provided with a downwardly de ected In 9 at each end of said slide and a central y disposed tongue or finger 10. Said slide 8 is providedwith a forwardly presented plate or apron 11 which carries a side marginal guide 12. This guide 12 serves also as a finger grip. In order to retain the slide 8 in any position to which it may be adjusted on the fixed plate or table 5, a leaf spring 13 which is secured to tongue or'finger 10 and is interposed between said finger and the Plate or table 5, is provided with rounded protuberances 14 and 15 which slidably engage in the rounded corner between the flange 6 and the plate or table 5. It will be understood from this description that the marginal flange or guide 12 constitutes a finger hold, by means of which the slide 8 may be adjusted longitudinally of the carriage. Suitable and eflicient means for preventing the top edge of a sheet from en gaging the lower edge of the plate or apron 11 upon a retrograde movement of said sheet, may be provided by a rounded bulge or bead 16 formed in the fixed plate or table 5. Thus whenever the top edge of a sheet has gone beyond the lower edge of the plate or apron 11 of the slide 8, should a retro grade movement be imparted thereto, said top edge of the sheet would be guided forwardly by means of the protuberant bead 16, so that it would fall forwardly of the lower edge of the plate or apron 11 and thus be prevented from bein caught thereon. The sprin is provide with lugs 17 which engage tie opposite lateral edges of the tongue or finger 10. By an ins ection of Fi 4 of the drawin it will seen that t e arms of the lea spring 13 are of unequal length on opposite sides of the finer 10, the longer arm being arranged ad- ]acent the finger grip 12 (see Figs. 2 and 4). A aper table 18 is journaled at oppo: site en s u on studs 19. In order to rovide suitab e means for yieldingly hol ing the paper table in its rearmost position, a spring 20 hasone end passed through a lug 21 on said table, the other end of said spring being turned about a pin or screw 22 car- Pied by an upward] prog'ecting part of the side frame 1 (see ig. 5
I claim: 1.,In a typewriter a carriage with end 'frames, a platen journale in said end frames, a paper table trunnioned in said provided being provided with means extending around said flange and yieldably engaging said late.
2. n a typewriter, a carriage provided with end frames; a platen jonrnaled in said end frames, a piate'extending between said end frames, a paper Itabie trunnioned in said end frames, and a side gage slidable on said plate, said side gage having portions overhanging ibhe upper edge of said plate or rail and carrying means yieldably engaging ifihe rear face of said plate.
7 3.1n a typewiiaer, a carriage ro'vided "'With end frameS, a plate connecting said end frames, said plate being provided with I gauge? a rearwardly presented flange, a slide slidabiy engagingsaid-plate and flange and having a finger extending. behind-the rear edge of said flange and toward said plate, a side paper gage projecting from one end ef said slide, and a leaf spring mounted on said finger and siidabiy enga 'mg the corner between said flange and p ate, said leaf spring-having an arm extending beyond the end of said slide and opposite to said side paper gage.
