DISPLAY DEVICE.
' Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed August 26, 1918. Serial No. 251,462.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrr-r GARAMI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical display devices, and the principal objects of the invention are :(1) to provide a mechanically operated display device of a patriotic character to be used in connection with campaigns for the sale of Liberty Bonds and far Saving Stamps, and for securing contributions to the Red Cross and in analogous activities; (2) to provide a display device including oppositely rotatable disks on which may be painted or otherwise produced messages, pictures, or other data, the disks being so designed and arranged that when put in operation, the data or pictures on one disk will be displayed or visualized in proper sequence as answers or responses to the messages or matter provided on the other disk; and (3) to provide a display device of the fOIegOing character having mechanism for intermittently operating the data disks in opposite directions and also for producing the operation at the desired intervals of hands or arms adapted to indicate or point out. certain data to which it is desired to call particular attention.
With the foregoing objects and others in view, the invention resides in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, defined in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part-of this specification, it beingunderstood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and in the details of construction within the scope of the claims appended hereto without depart ing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention 'is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of a display device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
.Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same, parts being broken away.
Fig. s a similar view with additional better illustrate the relative arrangement of interior working elements. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view, taken in the direction of line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmental rear elevational view, showing in particular the arrangement of, parts which the indicating, arms and movable display elements are operated.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the disk for actuating the indicating elements.
With more particular reference to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 8 denotes a base-plate or board to the front end of which is secured an upright face plate 9 which is produced preferably of card-board or similar material when the device is made relatively small in size forv a window or'indoor display, and which is made preferably of metal, wood or other similar material whenthe devlce is constructed in relatively large size for an outdoor display. The plate 9 is preferably made or cut with its opposite side edges 10 and 10 inclining somewhat toward each other in irregular outline, as best shown in Fig. 1. 1
The top portions of these sides are cut out or fashioned in conjunction with the top edge 12 to produce the upper portion of the figures or likenesses A and B respectively. Between these figures, the top edge 12 is cut or made to provide the are 13 of the circle or globe '14, which is produced between the figures, by means of painting, printing or otherwise. Within the circle representing the globe, there is painted or otherwise produced continental outlines or such parts thereof as may be necessary in order to illustrate the relative location of the United States and Germany. The figures or likenesses A and B are also preferably produced on the plate 9 by painting. In the present instance the figure A is produced or completed to represent Uncle Sam, while the figure B represents the over-seas military commander of Uncle Sam. As best shown in'Fig. 4:,the front'plate 9 is braced with respectto the bottom plate 8 by means of a side plate 15. I
Secured by means of screws as 16 or other- Wise to the bottom plate .8, spacedly behind the face plate 9, is a U-shaped frame, the sides 17 and 18 of which lie parallel'to the front plate 9. Journaled at 19in the side 18 and extending transversely through a suitable opening in opposite side 17 trally in a- 1s an opening in which is lOoseIyarranged a pin 24, the inner end of Whichis reduced and threaded within the square end 21. Engaged with this pin is a collar or flange 25. adapted to bear against the display disk 22 to secure the same in position upon the shaft 29: for rotation therewith. Loosely mounted upon the shaft 20 is asleeve 26 which 'al-so extends through the opening in the side plate 17'and to which is secured in front of said side plate a collar 2' 7. Loosely and centrally mounted around the shaft 20 and pinned to the said collar 2'Zis a second diskdisplay' plate 28, of the same size as the plate 22'. Both of the disk plates are of such size that their marginal face edges will be visualized above the arc edge 13 of the front plate 9 with respect to which they are concentrically mounted.- The disk plates 22 and 28each-have portions of theircircumference concentricallycutaway as at 29 and'BO-respectiVely, the depth of the cuts beingsuch aste synchronize the edges'thereof with the top arc edge 13 of'the face plate 9, and that the uncut marginal edges" 31 and 32', respectively, of the'plates, may be displayed above the said arc edge 13*.
Fast upon the sleeve26 behind: the side 17' of" the 'Ueshaped memberis apinion 33; while fast upon the shaft 20: beyond the sleeve is another pinion '34. Adapted to engage the pinion 33 is a segmental gear 35, fast on ashaft 36, which is rotatably j oun nal'ed in and between the sides 17' and 18.

The shaft 36, which'carries the segmental gears 35 and 39, projects beyond the side 18 where it is provided with a disk or cam device 49 having two peripheral faces, 50 and 51. 'Pivoted' to the side 18 at 52' is a lever '53 having a lug 54-, whichrides upon the cam face 51-to engage the recesses 55 therein' Pivotallyconnected with this'lever at 5.6 is a connecting rod 57, the opposite end of which is pivotally co niected at 58 to the crank arm 59, the shaft for which projects forwardly through the face plate 9, and to which is attached on the front side thereof the arm 66 of the figure or likeness B. 1 Fast also with the shaft for the crank arm 59 is a lever 61, to which ispivotally connected at (52 a connecting rod 63, which in turn is pivotally engaged at 6,4 with the crank 6550f the shaft 66,;on which is carried'a "disk display plate 67, the said shaft 6 6 being rotatably secured inthe face plate 9-. To the for-ward end of the rod 63 is pivoted at -68 theen-d of "a bell crank lever 69, supported on'a pin 70 projecting from the rearside of the face plate The oppo side end of this bellcr-ank lever is provided with a slot 71, inwhich worksa pin 72 cariied' by the triangular-shaped display plate 7.3; I In this display plate are alined slots as 74 receptive of' pins as 75projectirig-from the rearbf' the face plate 9-, and by which the display plate is mounted for vertical sliding movement under the operation of the Through the face plate plate '1 3 is anelongated areuate opening-'76; jT'his display plate-"7'3 ishereinshown as having "provided on eace, in such position 'that when the display plate is in'elevated posit-ion, the said word Peace will; be concealed behindtheface plate, and when in lowered position, the saidword will be displayed through the opening 76. Cut also through the face plate 9 in front of the display disk 67' is an opening 7 7. On the front side of this di'play di'sk, 'as herein shown, are the "words Autocracy and Democracy, the same being arranged on the spur gear on its front face "the 1 word said plate in such manner with respect to parts, a pair of independently rotatable said opening 77, that when one of the words disks arranged behind the face-plate paralis displayed through said opening, the other lel therewith and provided with marginal is concealed behind the front plate.
