WILLIAM '1. PALMER AND FRANK E. ABBOTT, 0F COALINGA, CALIFORNIA.
OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Paterited'JulyZS), 1919.
Application filed March 28, 1919. Serial No. 285,919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. PALMER and FRANK E. ABBOTT, citizens of the United States, residing at Coalinga, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to crude oil burners and it has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character constructed in such manner as to introduce steam to the burner both within the body of oil and outwardly thereof, and to so control the steam that an intense flame may be projected to considerable distances within furnaces of various types.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows:
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view of a burner constructed in accordance with the invention.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, we employ three Ts numbered 5, 6 and 7 A steam line 8 that is provided with a control valve 9 leads into the T 5 and serves as a means for introducing steam under pressure to the interior of a plpe 10. This pipe surrounds an oil tube 11, the front end of which projects slightly beyond the front end of the pipe 10 and the rear end of which is threaded into a fitting 12 which also serves as a connecting nipple between the Ts 5 and 6. The T 6 is connected by a nipple 13 with the T 7 and the latter T is connected by a nipple 14: with a valve casing 15 having a plug valve 16 therein. Located within the T 6 is a filling 17 of any suitable material which is bored to form ports 18 and 19, the port 18 serving to conduct steam from the steam line 20 to a recess 21 and the port 19 serving to conduct oil from an oil line 22 and the interior of T 7 to the recess 21. A controlling valve 23 is located in the steam line 20 and a controlling valve 24: is located in the oil line 22.
It will therefore be seen that steam is introduced into the body of oil at recess 21 and drives the oil forward with great force out of the tube 11. During the passage of the steam and oil through this tube the oil and steam become thoroughly mixed and more or less emulsified. It will be noted that the recess 21 and the interior of the fitting 12 form a chamber 25 that is considerably greater in diameter than the ports 18 or 19 'with the result that the jet of oil passing through the port 19 is caught by the in coming jet of steam through the port 18 and churned into intimate mixture with the steam. The resultant more or less emulsified oil and steam are discharged, as before stated, from the tube 11 with great force. As the body of oil and steam leave the mouth of the tube they tend to expand or flare outwardly but are caught by the rush of steam from pipe 10 and thoroughly atomized with the result that an intensely hot jet of flame may be projected for a great distance, thirty five feet for example, within a furnace, thereby efliciently reaching all parts of the combustion chamber.
The resultant combustion is practically perfect and no smoke is created, whereby a great saving in fuel is effected. The burner is of extreme simplicity, may be adjusted to any position, may be easily and quickly cleaned by opening the plug valve 16 and forcing air or steam under pressure therethrough, the heat may be shut ofi instantaneously and the flame may be very effectively controlled by the proper manipulation of the valves in the steam and oil lines.
While we have illustrated more or less conventional fittings, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular construction shown and described but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising an oil tube, a steam pipe surrounding the same, an oil supply pipe, a chamber of larger diameter than the oil tube between the latter and the oil supply, a port of materially smaller diameter than the oil tube leading to said chamber from the oil supply pipe, a steam supply pipe in advance of the oil supply pipe and a port establishing communication between the latter and said chamber, said port being of materially smaller diameter than the oil tube.
2. A device of the character described comprising an oil tube, a steam pipe surrounding the same and terminating slightly short of the front end of the oil tube means for introducing steam to the steam pipe at a point adjacent to the rear end of the oil tube, a member :with which the rear end of the tube is engaged having a chamber in its interior of a larger diameter than the oil tube, a filling material disposed'rearwardly of said chamber and having a port formed therethrough in longitudinal alinement with the oil tube, said port being of materially smaller diameter than the oil tube, a steam pipe disposed rearwardly of the last named port and supplying steam under pressure thereto and an oil supplyline there being a port in the'filling inaterlal and extendingbliquely from the oil supply line toward the chamber, there being a flaring recess formed in the filling material into which both of said ports lead as and for the purposes set forth. i
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
