Description

G. D. CLEAVELAND.
Improvement in Cultivators.
Patented Sep.10,1872.
Inventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,150, dated September 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. D. CLEAVELAND, of Flint, Steuben county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the manner of attaching the standards to the beam, so that either two or three furrows may be cultivated at the same time, as will hereafter be more fully set forth.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspectives of my invention taken from opposite sides.
0 represents the beam, to which the standards A carrying the shovels S are secured, and strengthened by the braces T and I. The front and rear standards are intended to be made adjustable in regard to the distance at which they may be secured from the beam, while the central one is so hinged between the ears B that by taking out the connecting-pin 'i it may be swung back out of the way, as
shown in Fig. 2. For the purpose of changing the distance laterally between the front and rear standards, the bent metal plates E are secured to the beam. These plates are formed from flat pieces of metal and are bent in the middle at right angles to the beam, extending outward sufficiently far to allow the top ends of the standards to be inserted between them and the beam, as shwon in Fig. 2. WVhen it is desired to plow three furrows, the front and rear standards aresecured to the outside of the plates E, and the central standard brought into play, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to cultivate but two furrows at a time the front and rear standards are detached from the outside of the plates E, and their ends inserted between the plates and the beam, thus bringing them nearer together, while the central one is swung back out of the Way, as shown in Fig. 2. The handles H are secured to the beam in the usual manner, and supported upon the upright P and strengthened by the braces c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the combination of the beam (J, pivoted and adjustable standards A, in combination with the bent plates E, when the said parts are so arranged that the standards can be adjusted to cultivatetwo or threefurrows at a time, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE D. GLEAVELAND.
