B. H. M. S PARGO. ALARM. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 16. 1918- Patented July 29, 1919.
Swvemtoz UNITED STATES; PATENT oFFIOE.
BENJAMIN H. M. SPARGO, OF HAWKSBURN, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA,
ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed October 16, 1918. Serial 258,375.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I v
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. M. SrAnoo, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 18 Howitt street, Hawks burn, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to alarms and more particularly to means whereby an alarm may be sounded at a given point at any predetermined time, the purpose being to provide novel means wherebythe alarm may be set and the duration of operation regulated.
The invention has for its object to combine with a clock or like timemovement, electric means including a bell or like signal and adjustable contacts whereby the circuit may be closed at a given time and the period of closing such circuit regulated so that the bell or alarm may sound for a given time, thereby insuring ample warning being given.
The invention has for its object to devise novel contact means that are adjustable about the dial and adjustable radially so as to present more or less extent of surface whereby the period of sounding of the alarm may be regulated to meet requirements.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diflerent conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detail view showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail through a ,portion of the dial illustrating the relation of the hands and cooperating contacts.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable contacts.
Fig. 4c is a section on the lines 4-4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Corresponding and like parts in the severtl views of the drawing are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
In carrying out the invention, the clock or time movement of any make or design is utilized, the same being provided with a ring 1 which is disposed concentric with the dial 2. The ring 1 may be mounted in any manner and provides supporting means for any number of adjustable contacts A. The clock or time movement is provided with'the usual minute hand 3 and hour hand 1 The hour hand 4 is electrically insulated from the frame of the clock and is included in the alarm circuit and cooperative with the contacts A- to closethe circuit at a predeter mined time and sound the alarm. i
The alarm circuit is indicated at Band comprises a battery 5 and a bell or like alarm device 6. One terminal of the wire compris ing the circuit B is attached. to the ring 1 or framework of thecloc'k'. The other terminal of the wire-or circuit B is connected with the hour hand 4 and as stated is electrically insulated so as to prevent short circuiting. The circuit is closed at the predetermined time by the extremity or tip of the hour hand 1 making electrical connection ,with one of the contacts.
'As indicated most clearly in Fig. 3, the contacts comprise two members 7 and 8. The member 8 is provided at its outer end with a spring clip 9 which is adapted to make snap engagement with the ring 1 so as to hold the contact in the adjusted position and yet admit of its movement on the ring or its application to or removal therefrom as required. The member 7 is adjustable with reference to the member 8 and its opposite edge portions are bent as indicated at 10 to embrace opposite edge portions of the member 8. The bent edge portions 10 are resilient so as to frictionally engage the edge portions of the member Sand thereby retain the member 7 securely in the adjusted position. The member 7 is radially adjustable so as to be moved outward and thereby admit of the hour hand 4 passing any one of the contacts without engagin the same. The inner end 11 of the adjustable member 7 is made tapering, the purpose being to provide for varying the duration of operation of the alarm. By adjusting the member 7, a portion thereof may be brought into position to be engaged by the tip or contact of the hour hand so that the extent of contact may vary according to the relative position of the member 7. The extremity of the tip or contact of the hour hand 4: travels in a prescribed circle and by adjusting the member 7 in or out the tapered end 11 may be brought to a position to present a greater or less extent of surface to be engaged by the extremity or contact of the hour hand 4. It is to be remembered that I the hour hand travels slowly, the distance 11 thereof, the alarm may be caused to sound for any determined fractional part of an hour as will be readilywunderstood. The adjustable member 7 is provided with graduations to facilitate the setting of the memberwhen it is required to adjust the contact. 'Any one of the circles'of the dial may be used as a guide in connection with the graduations on the member 7 when adjusting the contact.
It will be, understood that the bell or alarm 6 may be located in a room or at any point and one of the contacts A may be adjusted so as to effect a sounding of the alarm at the given time and have a predetermined period. By providing a number of contacts A, a ,pluralityof circuits may be associated witha single clock and the latter'may be utilized for closing, the several alarm circuits at the required time.
The foregoing description and the draw ings have reference to what maybe considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a clock and an electric alarm including a hand of the clock, a contact having a tapering portion and ad- 40 justa'ble to bring a greater or less extent of the contact into the path of the movable contact for regulating the period of the operation of the alar 2. In combination with a clock, a rin concentric with the dial thereof, an electric alarm circuit, a contact adjustable on the ring and embodying a radially movable element having a tapered portion to present a greater or less extent of surface for the movable contact, whereby the duration of the alarm may be regulated.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature 1 in presence of two witnesses. e A i BENJAMIN H. M. SPARGO. Witnesses:
