Be it known-that 1, Jesse P. ,N IPER, a citi- States, and resident of Allamuchy, in the county of lYarren and State of" New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Direction- Indicators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to'signals and has more especial reference to an improved direction indicating signal for motor vehicles.

The invention has for its dominant object, to provide a signal operable from the drivers seat of av otor driven vehicle, whereby the course to'he taken by the vehicle can be pre-' viously signaled to drivers of vehicles in the rear and pedestrians.

It is another and equally important object of the invention to provide a novel support for the signal. means proper, the said means serving to eiliciently support the signal means, to prevent the splashing of mud and the like thereon, and also as light'ray refleeting means r'or projecting the light directly onto the signal means.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of signal having a plurality of directions and symbols thereon and being rotatably mounted to permit the independent displaying of such directions and symbols.

The improvements in the details and ar- 1 rangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same. 1

Manifestly, the construction shown is capa'ble of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my proper indicating claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.

- I claim:

A direction indicator, comprising a hood having end walls formed with bearings and its inner surface polished to provide a reflector,-a lamp box mounted in said bearings in the hood for rotation on a horizontal axis, said lamp box having one wall open, a translucent sign arranged adjacent the open wall, a rack gear on one end of said lamp'box, a horizontal rack bar mounted for sliding movement and meshing with said gear, and held in meshing engagement by the hood, and a lever connected to said rack bar for imparting reeiprocatory movement thereto.
