IMPROVEMENT iN WASHING-MACl-HNES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,119, dated September 3, 1872.

. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL W. Born, of Endora, in the county of Douglass and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of referencemarked thereon making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my machine, showing its position while putting in and taking out the clothes. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing its position' during the operation of washing; and Fig. 3 is a front view of the dasher.

A represents the box, provided with a curved metal bottom, B, and supported upon legs'O C. At one end of the box projects a strip, E, upward across the machine, and to the same is hinged a narrow strip, D, which forms a part of the cover. The cover proper G is hinged at the opposite end of the box and rests upon strips a a on the sides of the box, and also upon the hinged strip D, as shown in Fig. 2. At the same end of the box where the lid Gis hinged is an upright forked post, H, in which a bar or a jockey-stick, I, is pivoted, the other end of said bar being pivoted in the upper end of the dasher-bar J, said dasher-bar passing through a slot or opening in thecover G, and is suspended upon a crank, 7), formed in the middle of a shaft, d, which is placed across the center of the box in suitable journal-boxes e e in the sides thereof. Upon one end of the crank-shaft d is a handle, K, for turning the same. The dasher is composed of a longitudinally-corrugated bar, L, placed with the corrugated side downward and connectedat the ends by short bars ff with a straight bar, M, which is attached to the lower end of the dasher-bar J. On the bottom B of the box is placed a wash-board,

composed of a frame, h, curved to correspond with the curvature of the bottom B, and across said frame are a number of rollers, i i. On the outside of the box are metallic handles a n for convenience in carryingormovingthemachine. Thebarorfljockey stick I being moved to the upper end of the forked post H, the lid G can be turned up against said post to put in or take out the clothes. When the clothes and water are put in said bar is moved down to the lower end of the post, after the lid is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. The water, in washing, floats the washboard he up against the buttons m 122, water enough being required to cover said buttons. The dasher in making its revolution catches a portion of the clothes under the rubber L of the dash, and carries them across the washboard, while the rest of the clothes floating in the water pass back through the opening of the dash between the rubber L and bar M, and when the dash strikes the water for the second revolution it changes its hold on the clothes and carries another portion of them over the wash-board. By the floating clothes passing back through the opening of the dash no packing or wadding of the clothes is experienced and all parts are washed alike. The strip or head board E is the place for the wringer. The wash-board hi may be taken out by raising the hinged strip D and turning the button m, so that it will pass through a hole made for that purpose in the end of the wash-board frame. A faucet may be used to draw off the dirty water in the box.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the box A, post H, bar I, dasher-bar J, crank-shaft cl, dash L M, and wash-board h 13, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
